For specific frame requirements, see the appropriate HPE Synergy Frame Setup and Install Guide. Installing multiple switches If you do not have a DHCP server connected to the HPE Synergy Frame Link Module, install and configure one Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module at a time. This is required so that Ethernet IP address conflicts do not occur with duplicate default Ethernet IP addresses. IMPORTANT: DHCP is enabled by default on this switch. In cases where DHCP is available, IP address conflicts do not occur, simplifying multiple switch installations. See Using external DHCP (page 13). See also the most current documentation for interconnects and other HPE Synergy components at the website: Each switch must be assigned a unique Ethernet IP address during configuration. Once the default Ethernet IP address on the Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module has been changed, you may install additional Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module in the enclosure. For help identifying your specific enclosure setup, available connections, and power requirements, see the appropriate HPE Synergy Frame Setup and Install Guide. Electrical considerations The Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module requires 70 watts, fully configured including all transceivers, provided by the enclosure. No other power requirement or provision exists. Environmental considerations Ensure proper cooling and ventilation by verifying the following: The air vents on the enclosure are not blocked or restricted. The ambient air temperature at the front of the enclosure does not exceed 43 C (109.4 F) while the switch is operating. IMPORTANT: The dust covers that ship with your Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module must be inserted into any ports where SFPs are not installed, to help contain air flow in the Synergy frame. 10 Setup

HPE Synergy Frame Link Module power verification HPE OneView is the virtual appliance that monitors and manages the devices contained within the frame. HPE OneView provides a single point from which you can perform basic management tasks on switches or compute modules installed in the frame and is the interface to the HPE Synergy Frame Link Module. IMPORTANT: Hewlett Packard Enterprise recommends reading the appropriate HPE Synergy Frame Setup and Install Guide and the HPE OneView User Guide for HPE Synergy. Reading these guides in sequence promotes an overall understanding of your Synergy Frame. Once the switch is installed in the interconnect bay, the HPE Synergy Frame Link Module verifies the switch type matches the mezzanine cards present on the servers. If there is no mismatch, the HPE Synergy Frame Link Module powers up the switch. If the switch does not power up, check the frame and switch status with the HPE OneView web interface. For more information, see the HPE OneView User Guide for HPE Synergy. 12 Setup

18 Using Dynamic Ports on Demand (DPOD) DPOD functionality does not require a predefined assignment of ports. Port assignment is determined by the total number of ports in use as well as the number of purchased ports. The DPOD feature simplifies port management by: Automatically detecting HBA connected server ports or cabled ports Automatically enabling ports Automatically assigning port licenses To initiate DPOD, use the licenseport command, as described in Page 18. IMPORTANT: For the Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module, DPOD works oy if the compute module is installed with an HBA present. A compute module that does not have a functioning HBA is not treated as an active link for the purpose of initial POD port assignment. DPOD commands 18 Setup Use the licenseport command to manage dynamic POD assignments with the following options: licenseport reserve portnum reserves a future license assignment for a specific port, even if the port is currently offline. licenseport release portnum removes a license from a port. portcfgpersistentdisable blocks a specific port from future assignments. licenseport -show displays an overview of the POD license status and port assignments. 20 3 Managing the Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module Software Management HPE B-series Network Advisor is the recommended tool for managing the Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module and the SAN fabric to which it is connected. HPE B-series SAN Network Advisor provides comprehensive management of data center fabrics including configuration, monitoring, and management of all B-series Directors, Switches, and HBAs. It provides support for FC SANs with configuration, zoning, and visualization capabilities, including HBA, storage, SAN fabric, and Layer 2 switch topology views. SAN diagnostics help meet SLAs via proactive alerting and advanced SAN diagnostic capabilities, including SAN port diagnostics, bottleneck detection, and best-practices validation of SAN configurations. Management features The management tools built into the Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module (listed in Table 6 (page 20)) can be used to monitor fabric topology, port status, physical status, and other information used for performance analysis and system debugging. When running IP over FC, these management tools must be run on both the Fibre Channel host and the switch, and must be supported by the FC host driver. For a list of FC hosts supported by the Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module, contact your Hewlett Packard Enterprise representative. Table 6 Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module management features Management tool CLI Run up to two admin sessions and four user sessions simultaneously. 21 Maintaining the Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module The Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module does not require any regular physical maintenance. It is critical, however, that environmental conditions, described in Environmental requirements (page 32), are met to help prevent switch failure due to heat stress or improper air flow. Dust covers must be installed in empty ports The Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module comes with dust covers installed on all SFP/QSP ports, and should remain inserted in ports where SFPs/QSFPs are not installed. Having dust covers installed in empty ports ensures proper air flow and helps reduce dust contamination. Removing a QSFP transceiver To remove a QSFP transceiver: 1. Remove the cable from the transceiver. 2. Rotate the bail down, and then use the bail to pull the transceiver out of the blade connector. Figure 6 QSFP transceiver Bail open 1. Cable 2. Bail 3. Transceiver To install a QSFP transceiver: 1. While holding the bail, position the QSFP transceiver to align with the blade connector and push in the transceiver until it is firmly seated. The status LED initially blinks amber, and then displays steady amber. The QSFP transceiver is keyed to fit into the connector oy one way. 2. Close the bail. 3. Attach the cable. Replacing an SFP transceiver In some cases, you might need to reinstall an SFP transceiver. To remove an SFP transceiver: 1. Press and hold the cable release. 2. Remove the cable from the transceiver. 3. Pull the pull tab or bail (wire handle or plastic tab) to release the transceiver. 4. Grasp the pull tab or bail, and gently but firmly pull the transceiver out of the port. 5. Repeat this procedure for the remaining ports as required. To install a replacement SFP: 1. For SFPs with bails, make sure the bail is in the uocked position. 2. Orient the SFP with the appropriate port (see Figure 7 (page 22)). Maintaining the Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module 21

22 Figure 7 Installing an SFP 1. Bail 2. SFP 3. Insert the SFP into the port until it clicks. 4. Close the bail if it is the wire handle. Diagnostic tests In addition to POST, Fabric OS includes diagnostic tests to help troubleshoot the hardware and the firmware, including tests of internal connections and circuitry, fixed media, and the transceivers and cables in use. Initiate diagnostic tests with the command line, using a Telnet session or a serial connection to the switch via OneView. Some tests require the ports to be connected by external cables to allow diagnostics to verify the serializer/deserializer interface, transceiver, and cable. For information on available diagnostic tests, enter diaghelp or portcfgdport. All diagnostic tests are run at link speeds of 4 Gbps, 8 Gbps, and 16 Gbps. CAUTION: Diagnostic tests can temporarily lock the transmit/receive link speed during diagnostic testing. For information about specific diagnostic tests, see the latest version of the Fabric OS Administrator Guide, or enter help followed by the name of the diagnostic test. Powering on and off The Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module power is provided by the frame. The Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module runs POST by default each time power to the enclosure is turned on. The POST process can last up to three minutes. To remove power from the switch, use OneView or remove the Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module from the frame interconnect bay. NOTE: Each time the Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module is powered on, its settings are restored to the last saved configuration. Interpreting LED activity You can monitor switch activity and status by checking the Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module LEDs. There are three possible LED states: no light, a steady light, or a flashing light. The steady lights and flashing lights can be green or amber. The LEDs flash any of these colors during boot, POST, or other diagnostic tests. This is normal and does not indicate a problem uess the LEDs do not indicate a healthy state after all boot processes and diagnostic tests are complete. A healthy state is indicated by a steady green light. For details about LED activity, see Table 8 (page 23). 22 Managing the Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module

23 LED indicators All Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module LEDs are located on the port side, see Figure 5 (page 13). LED patterns Table 8 (page 23) and Table 9 (page 23) summarize LED color, and meaning, and any recommended user response. Module status LED patterns The system and power LED patterns are shown in Table 8 (page 23). Table 8 Module Status LED patterns during normal operation LED name LED color Status of hardware Recommended action Module Status No light Switch is off, boot is not complete, or boot failed. Rerun the diagnostics to verify the error condition is fixed. POST and boot specifications POST POST is a system check that is performed each time the switch is powered on, rebooted, or reset. During POST, the LEDs flash different colors. Any errors that occur during POST are listed in the error log. The Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module performs POST when it is turned on or rebooted. Total boot time with POST is approximately three minutes. POST can be omitted for subsequent reboots by using the fastboot command. For more information about this command, see the latest version of the Fabric OS Command Reference Guide. If you suspect a problem with the switch, enable POST to obtain more information on any failure. The success and failure results of the diagnostic tests that run during POST can be monitored through the error log or the CLI. POST includes the following: Running preliminary POST diagnostics Initializing the operating system Initializing hardware Running diagnostic tests on several functions, including circuitry, port functionality, memory, statistics counters, and serialization Boot Boot completes in approximately three minutes if it is run. Boot includes the following tasks after POST completes: Universal ports are configured Links are initialized Fabric is analyzed; if any ports are connected to other switches, the Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module participates in a fabric configuration The Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module obtains a domain ID and assigns port addresses Unicast routing tables are constructed Normal port operation is enabled 24 Managing the Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module

25 Interpreting POST results To determine whether POST completed successfully and whether any errors were detected: 1. Verify the Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module LEDs indicate all components are healthy. For a description and interpretation of LED patterns, see Table 9 (page 23). If one or more LEDs do not display a Healthy state, use the switchshow command to verify the LEDs on the switch are not set to beacon. 2. Verify the Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module prompt appears on the terminal of a computer workstation connected to the switch. If there is no switch prompt when POST completes, press Enter. If the switch prompt still does not appear, try opening another Telnet session or another management tool. If the Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module still does not complete POST successfully, contact your Hewlett Packard Enterprise representative. 3. Any errors detected during POST are written to the system log. Use the errshow command to review the system log. For information about all referenced commands and accessing the error log, see the latest version of the Fabric OS Administrator Guide. For information about error messages, see the Fabric OS System Error Messages Reference Manual. About the reset button The Brocade 16Gb FC Switch Module integrates a Reset button, (Figure 5 (page 13)). The Reset button is a small, recessed micro-switch that is accessed by inserting a pin (or object of similar size) in the small hole. Use the Reset button to reboot the switch (see Figure 5 (page 13)). Rebooting the switch Depress the Reset button for at least 5 seconds to reboot the switch.
