2 2 Metasys System Extended Architecture Glossary Technical Bulletin Key Concepts Metasys System Extended Architecture Component Acronyms Table 1 lists the acronyms for the components of the Metasys system extended architecture. Table 1: Metasys System Extended Architecture Component Acronyms Acronym Definition Explanation/Primary Function ADS Application and Data Server Application server software that coordinates user access to multiple NAEs/NIEs and archives system data. ADX Application and Data Extended Server ADS software with extended concurrent user access and a larger database. The ADX supports the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 software. LCT Logic Connector Tool Graphical software tool for creating and viewing custom control logic. NAE Network Automation Engine Series of Web-enabled supervisory controllers for N2 Bus and LonWorks network devices. The NAE also provides BACnet connectivity. NIE Network Integration Engine Web-enabled supervisory controller for integration of N1 Networks. SCT System Configuration Tool Software for offline system configuration, simulation, and archiving configuration data. SCT is included in the ADS/ADX. UGT User Graphics Tool Software for creating dynamic data elements in graphic displays.

Table 2: Metasys System Extended Architecture Acronyms and Terms Acronym Definition/Term Explanation/Primary Function * Archive Location within a database on non-volatile media for safe long-term storage of data. Includes system configuration and historical data. * Authentication The process of identifying and verifying a user via user name and password. * Authorization The process of granting access to specific functions and data based upon privileges defined in the security system. Authorization follows authentication. * Control System Name used for a custom control logic application. DDA Destination Delivery Agent Agent that routes and deliver event messages to destinations such as pagers, printers, , and SNMP management systems. * Metasys Server Term used on the Metasys user interface for the device that runs ADS/ADX software. OCW Object Creation Wizard A series of step-by-step dialog windows that lead the user through the configuration process of devices, objects, and features. * Repository Location within a database on non-volatile media to collect and coordinate active data from one or multiple devices on the network on a continuous basis. Includes alarm and event messages, operator transactions, and trend data. * Site A collection of devices on a continuously connected network that are logically configured as a system for building control and user access. * Site Director Device that hosts the Web based user interface as the single point of access to the site, and monitors all other Web enabled devices on the site. * Acronym not applicable

Table 3: General Technology Acronyms and Terms Acronym Definition Explanation/Primary Function BACnet Building Automation and Control Network American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) standard for a data transmission protocol for the building automation industry. Conformance is documented in a Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS) that references the BACnet Interoperability Building Blocks (BIBBs) supported. DHCP Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol Enables dynamic IP network configuration and IP addressing. DMZ Demilitarized Zone Network segment providing services to insecure systems over public networks. DNS Domain Name System Identifies IP nodes by mapping host names to IP addresses. DSL Digital Subscriber Line High speed digital telephone line. * Firewall A set of programs that protect and restrict access to private networks from other networks including the Internet. HTML HyperText Markup Language Web page definition language. HTTP HyperText Transfer Protocol Internet data transport protocol. IIS Internet Information Services Web Server included in Microsoft Windows operating systems. IP Internet Protocol Transport protocol of the Internet. Verification of reliable transmission is provided by Transport Control Protocol (TCP). ISP Internet Service Provider A company that provides access to the Internet. IT Information Technology General name for electronic data processing and technical standards for network communication. JPEG Joint Photographic Engineering Group Group that defined a standardized format for compressing and optimizing digital photographic images. LAN Local Area Network Contiguous network within a building or area. LON Local Operating Network A data transmission technology from Echelon Corporation. Also called LonWorks technology using the LonTalk protocol. A set of physical data and configuration standards for interoperability is defined by the LonMark Interoperability Association. MSDE Microsoft SQL Desktop Engine Database engine software from Microsoft Corporation without database management. ADS software includes MSDE 2000 software. ODBC Open Database Connectivity Interface definition for access to SQL database over a network. POP Post Office Protocol Protocol for storing messages on a server and forwarding messages to a client receiver. Continued on Next Page...

Definition Explanation/Primary Function PPP Point-to-Point Protocol Standard protocol for point-to-point serial connections between devices including modem configuration. RAS Remote Access Service Networking service that provides a virtual connection to remote devices. SMTP Simple Mail Transfer Protocol data network transport protocol. SNMP Simple Network Management Protocol Protocol for supervision of networked devices and notification of fault conditions. SNTP Simple Network Time Protocol Protocol for time of day synchronization on networks. SNVT Standard Network Variable Type Definition of the data structure for a network variable in a Local Operating Network as defined by the LonMark Interoperability Association (pronounced sniv-it). SOAP Simple Object Access Protocol Protocol using XML and HTTP to encode and transport object information requests over by HTTP. SQL Structured Query Language Programming language for reading/writing to a database (sometimes pronounced sequel). SVG Scalable Vector Graphic Language for describing two-dimensional vector and mixed vector/raster graphics in XML. USB Universal Serial Bus Standard for physical connection and master/slave serial communication between devices, point-to-point or multi-drop. VPN Virtual Private Network Secure communication over a public network using tunneling protocols and security procedures. WAN Wide Area Network A network that links Local Area Networks (LANs) using long distance telecommunication networks. * Web Browser A device or program that accesses information from a data source that is typically a Web server. A Web browser presents data and transmits commands. The server device provides the presentation format and contains the resources for data processing. * Web Services A collection of standard protocols and functions for the Internet packaged and published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). XIF External Interface File A file that describes the network variables (SNVTs) and configuration parameters of a LonWorks enabled device.
