Issue Date June 18, 2002 PRODUCT BULLETIN M-Alarm Multimedia Extension (MMX) With M-Alarm Multimedia Extension (MMX) software, M-Series Workstations provide direct and comprehensive alarm notification capabilities. M-Alarm MMX provides an economical way of routing critical alarm messages to a large number of destinations and devices. This capability allows you to apply MMX alarm notification features to all integrated networks of the Building Automation System (BAS). With M-Alarm MMX, operators have the ability to quickly communicate critical enterprise conditions. These features allow you to better manage environmental comfort, energy usage, and lighting control, respond to emergency conditions, and optimize control strategies quickly and easily. MMX greatly enhances the M-Series Workstation alarm notification capabilities. Figure 1: M-Alarm Multimedia Configurator Features and Benefits Standards-Based Architecture Pager Fax Marquee Popup Instant Messaging Sound/ Text-to-Speech Phone Call-Out Phone Call-In Incorporates OLE for Process Control (OPC) standards for routing alarm and event messages from integrated Metasys N1 and N30 networks Sends messages to pagers using Tele Alphanumeric Protocol (TAP) and to Simple Message System (SMS) pagers using the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) Sends messages to one or several recipients Sends a message to a fax machine Creates a marquee window that displays an alarm message on the local computer or remotely over the network Opens and executes a defined program file on the local computer based on incoming alarm messages Sends a message to any computer using Microsoft MSN Messenger for Windows service Plays a prerecorded sound file or a speech converted from a text file on the local computer or remotely over the network Calls a defined phone number and either plays a prerecorded sound file or a defined text file that is automatically converted to speech Allows callers to dial the BAS by phone and issue commands to objects via the phone keys 2002 Johnson Controls, Inc. 1 Code No. LIT
Enhance Alarm Notification Options With M-Alarm MMX software, M-Series Workstations provide flexible alarm notification capabilities for communicating critical conditions of your BAS to a large number of different devices and destinations. You can inform your building operators about critical BAS conditions via the Workstation, via a separate Personal Computer (PC) on a connected Internet Protocol (IP) network, via phone or via pager. M-Alarm MMX offers Multimedia agents that allow you to address these communication needs by displaying information, by playing sound or speech, or even by displaying video content. In addition to these alarm notification capabilities, the MMX Call-In Agent allows users to dial the BAS by phone and issue commands to objects via phone keys. M-Alarm MMX allows you to stay in touch with your BAS from anywhere. Configure Easily For configuring the different Multimedia Agents, MMX provides a Multimedia Configuration Wizard that guides the user through the configuration process. This feature helps the user to filter the alarms that need to be sent, define the alarm actions to be performed, and configure communication details for the selected Multimedia Agent. Schedules allow you to configure MMX to send alarm messages only if a particular user is available according to a defined schedule. You can set up schedules for groups or individuals. The MMX alarm notification capabilities and the ease of configuring the Multimedia agents maximize your investment and facilitate the productivity of your employees. 3 Send Alarm Messages to Pagers The Pager Agent sends messages to pagers using the Tele Alphanumeric Protocol (TAP) and standard modems to communicate. The Pager Agent connects to a wide variety of TAP pager services and supports the most popular paging protocols. TAP pagers can also use Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) carriers. The Pager Agent can also send Simple Messaging Service (SMS) paging messages by using the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) network. The Pager Agent supports a large number of paging services for GSM/PCS (SMS) pagers. SMS pagers offer more sophisticated interaction by permitting two-way paging. The Pager Agent allows users to send an Acknowledge to the BAS directly from the pager that is supporting GSM/PCS Services. Send Alarm Messages via The Agent allows you to send an alarm message as an message using a Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI)-compliant program such as MS Outlook Express. The user can configure the information that is being displayed with the message. The message may contain an attachment, which can be any file that can be sent as an attachment. In addition, the Agent provides the capability to return an Acknowledge message referencing a predefined acknowledge code. Figure 3: Pager Agent Configuration M-Alarm Multimedia Extension (MMX) Product Bulletin 3
Send Alarm Messages to Fax Machines The Fax Agent allows you to send an alarm message to a fax machine. The Fax Agent provides the capability to send a separate cover page, which indicates the fax sender and recipient - including the phone and fax number of the fax sender. Figure 4: Agent Configuration Figure 5: Fax Agent Configuration 4 M-Alarm Multimedia Extension (MMX) Product Bulletin
Send an Alarm Message to a Marquee Window The Marquee Agent creates a marquee window that displays an alarm message, either on the local M-Series Workstation computer, or on a remote computer over the network. The Marquee Agent also provides the capability to display the alarm message on a qualified marquee device. The user can specify how often and how long a marquee message is displayed. Display Popup Windows The Popup Agent allows you to open and execute a file on an M-Series Workstation. This allows you to launch applications based on when a critical situation occurs in your BAS. For example, you can configure a Popup Agent to open an M-Graphics display on an M-Series Workstation to provide more information about the system that is currently in alarm condition. The Popup Agent can also open an Internet Web browser and display information within the Web browser. The user can interact with the launched application. Figure 6: Marquee Agent Configuration M-Alarm Multimedia Extension (MMX) Product Bulletin 5
Send an Alarm Message via Instant Messaging The Instant Messaging Agent allows you to send an alarm message using Microsoft MSN Messenger for Windows service. The Instant Messaging Agent also provides the capability to acknowledge the message. The user who receives the Instant Messaging message can acknowledge the alarm by replying to the message referencing a predefined acknowledge code. Figure 7: Popup Agent Configuration 6 M-Alarm Multimedia Extension (MMX) Product Bulletin
Play a Prerecorded Sound File The Sound or Text-to-Speech Agent plays a prerecorded sound file or speech converted from a text file on the M-Series Workstation when a critical situation occurs in your BAS. You can specify how often and how long the sound file is played. Figure 8: Instant Messaging Agent Figure 9: Sound Agent Configuration 7 M-Alarm Multimedia Extension (MMX) Product Bulletin
Send an Alarm Message over the Phone The Phone Call-Out Agent allows you to send out an alarm message over the telephone. You can prerecord the message that is sent. A dedicated voice board installed on the M-Series Workstation is used to play the outgoing message. The user who receives the call can acknowledge the alarm by replying to the phone message referencing a predefined acknowledge code. You can specify how often and how long the sound file is played. Figure 10: Phone Call-out Agent Configuration 8 M-Alarm Multimedia Extension (MMX) Product Bulletin
Issue Commands over the Telephone The Phone Call-In Agent enables users to make a phone call to the BAS and to issue commands to a defined number of objects. A typical application for the Phone Call-In Agent is in an office building to allow tenants to set their own comfort level in their office environment. The user can prerecord responding system messages using a dedicated voice board that is installed on the M-Series Workstation. The Phone Call-In Agent restricts the BAS access of the callers. Conclusion M-Alarm MMX is an economical solution for providing extended alarm notification capabilities to the M3 and M5 Workstations. This software enhances the capability of the M-Series Workstation platforms for applications that require alarm notification to different media and devices. With MMX, the M3 and the M5 Workstations provide advanced techniques that make Johnson Controls systems the standard in the industry.
