3 Direct Connect and Dial-Up on Windows 98 3 Direct Connect and Dial-Up on Windows 98 Introduction This document discusses some installation and configuration issues related to using direct serial and dial-up (modem) connections for N30 Supervisory Controller (N30) and M-Series Workstation systems. This document describes how to: install dial-up networking modify the dial-up networking settings for direct serial connections add a direct serial connection option under modems add a modem create a Network Connection icon modify a Network Connection icon For further information on communications issues in N30/M-Series Workstation systems, see the Site Book User s Guide (LIT ) and the N30 Supervisory Controller Networking Technical Bulletin (LIT ).
4 4 Application Notes Key Concepts Direct Connect Also called a direct serial connection, this is when you make a connection from a Personal Computer (PC) to another PC or some other device, such as an N30, using a cable connected from the serial port on the PC to a serial port on the other PC or device. Custom Modem Configuration File When using a direct serial or a dial-up (modem) connection in the System Tools components of M-Tool, communication is established using Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP). However, by default Windows 98 software does not support PPP over a direct serial connection. In order to support a direct serial connection on Windows 98 software, a custom modem configuration file must be installed that makes the direct connection appear as a modem connection to the Windows communications components. The System Tools installation adds a custom modem configuration file (Mdmsc2pc.inf) to the \Windows\inf\ directory. This file provides a definition for a direct connection. This definition appears as a modem to Windows software. If you have not installed System Tools and you need this file for other Johnson Controls products, copy the file from the M-Tool installation disk. The file is found in the directory: CD-drive:\System Tools\Win95Updates\. Dial-Up Networking Accessory in Windows operating systems that allows remote access to other computers and devices. Note: For both direct serial and dial-up (modem) connections, Windows Dial-Up Networking must be installed. Installation of Dial-Up Networking is an option with Windows 98 software that may or may not be currently installed on the PC. Network Connection Icon A dial-up connection profile allows a computer to dial out to different connection points. The profile is represented by icons created after configuring a communications connection for a site or device on your PC using Windows Dial-Up Networking. When a Network Connection icon is created, the site it represents is selectable from other communications programs, such as Site Book. Opening the Network Connection icon allows you to edit the parameters of that site, for example, to change the phone number used to dial the site.
5 Direct Connect and Dial-Up on Windows 98 5 Client for Microsoft Networks By default, during the installation of the Dial-Up Networking update, the Client for Microsoft Networks is installed and selected. This component is not required by the M-Tool direct connect software. Leaving it enabled causes additional network traffic on the direct serial connection, which effectively reduces the communications bandwidth available for M-Tool messages and slows down M-Tool functions such as uploads and downloads. See Modifying the Dial-Up Network Settings in this document for instructions on disabling this feature. Direct Serial Communications Checklist Setting up communications between a PC and an external device is a multi-step process. Table 1 is a guide to verify all the steps required for successful communications are complete. Table 1: Direct Serial Communications Checklist Step Task Completed 1 Verify that Dial-Up Networking is installed. See Installing Dial-Up Networking in this document. 2 Modify the default Dial-Up Networking settings for the best performance. See Modifying the Dial-up Networking Settings in this document. 3 Verify that Dial-Up Networking Serial Cable between 2 PCs is available as a modem connection. See Adding a Direct Serial Connection Option under Modems in this document. 4 Go to Dial-Up Networking and add a Network Connection icon for the direct serial connection. See Creating a Network Connection Icon in this document. The default Network Connection icon created in this step must be modified for use with M-Tool and M-Series Workstations. 5 Modify the Network Connection icon for the direct serial connection. See Modifying a Network Connection Icon Setting in this document. 6 Go to the Site Book and define a site using the name of the direct serial connection s Network Connection icon. See Adding a Direct Serial or Dial-Up (Modem) Connection Site in the Site Book User s Guide (LIT ). 7 See the following literature to continue: To continue generating databases for N30s, see the flowcharts in the Database Generation section of the N30 Supervisory Controller Quick Start Technical Bulletin (LIT ).
