A Case Study Computer Science (CS) course offered by Math/Computing Department of University of the South Pacific (USP) using the Distance Teaching and Learning (DTL) mode. Maths / Computing Department 1
Semester one 2004 A post graduate course: CS493 Advanced Information Technology for Small Business with Open Sources JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency, Suva office) UEC (University Electro Communication, Tokyo, Japan ) NICT (National institute of Information and Communications Technology) ARIB (Association of Radio Industries and Business) CRL ( Communication Research Laboratory) Maths / Computing Department 2
CS493 - CS Post graduate course offered live via satellite from Japan (University of Electro Communications). Maths / Computing Department 3
Outline Technology utilized Creation of Distance Teaching and Learning (DTL) environment Observations made Maths / Computing Department 4
Technology utilized (at USP s end) The latest current technology IP based network Satellite SuperBird-C Satellite receiving dish Satellite router Switches / hubs Pologom digital camera DHCP server Local Area Network (LAN) of 20 computers Maths / Computing Department 5
IP based network Modern digital technology allows different sectors, e.g. telecom, data, radio and television, to be merged together. This occurrence is drastically changing the way in which both people and devices communicate. At the center of this process, forming the backbone and making convergence possible, are IP-based networks Maths / Computing Department 6
Communication Technique circuit-switched network packet-switched network techniques Maths / Computing Department 7
Different network techniques for establishing communication between nodes on a network the circuit-switched network used in a traditional telephone system creates a closed circuit between two nodes in the network to establish a connection. established connection is thus dedicated to the communication between the two nodes packet-switched network techniques used in IP-based networks Messages are first divided into packets containing the destination address. Then, each packet is sent over the network with every intermediate node and router in the network determining where the packet goes next. A packet does not need to be routed over the same links as previous related packets. Uses available capacity much more efficiently and minimizes the risk of possible problems, such as a disconnection Maths / Computing Department 8

Satellite SuperBird-C Hughes Space and Communications Company, today known as Boeing Satellite Systems, Inc., built a high-power Hughes 601 model spacecraft for Space Communications Corporation (SCC) of Japan. Joining a pre-existing two-satellite constellation, SUPERBIRD-C provides television signals and business communications services throughout Japan, southern and eastern Asia, and Hawaii using Ku-band frequencies. SUPERBIRD-C was successfully launched on July 27, 1997, aboard an Atlas IIAS launch vehicle from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Source: Maths / Computing Department 12
