24 Effect of Higher Power on Structured Cabling What factors influence the power capabilities of a cable? 1. Gauge Size Larger copper gauge generates less heat and is better at mitigating heat rise 2. Cable Size Larger cables better dissipate heat 24

Temperature rating Cables with a higher temp rating will have a better ability to mitigate heat rise 100% FEP (Plenum) insulation will have a higher rating than partial FEP or polyolefin insulation (Riser) 4. Other elements of cable construction Shielded products dissipate heat down the length of the cable and therefore improve capability 25

26 When is PoE power on the cabling Power is only supplied by the PSE onto cabling that has a valid PD connected onto the end. To accomplish this the PSE poll each cabling attached to each attached PoE supported port by applying a very low trace voltage onto the attached cable pairs PD PSE NP A valid PD that wants power acknowledges this trace voltage with a specific signature response to the PSE. Along with a valid PoE signature, PDs may optionally present a classification signature (how much wattage the device is requesting) PD PD PSE NP PD

27 Spark Gap Concerns Spark Gap Concerns When Un-mating Under PoE Load PoE power is not on the cabling until a circuit is completed and confirmed with a valid PD. Un-mating a jack-plug connection while transmitting PoE power can produce an arch between the plug and jack. This arching can cause eroding or plating damage to occur at the point the arch occurs on the plated jack and plug contact surfaces Eroding of the plated contacts might cause some degradation over the life of the connection that could compromise network performance or increased bit error rates.
