3 Safety with surge protective devices Surge protective devices (SPDs) increase safety and prevent dangerous surge from entering the building via the power and telecommunication lines. The SPDs reduce the surge to a level which is not dangerous to terminals. This means they prevent short circuits and the resulting risk of fire.
