3 An introduction to Lightning and Surge Protection Lightning and Surge protection for electrical and electronic systems to the new British and European Standard BS EN Surge Protection Devices Ltd offer the complete solution to protect vital systems from damage. SOLAR Recently introduced standards put equal importance on protecting the electrical installation and electrical equipment as to the building itself. Modern micro electronic components are very sensitive to overvoltages and because many systems are networked they rely on each other for the system to operate. If one part of the system gets damaged due to lightning or surges, the whole system will not operate. LIGHTNING PROTECTION New Standard BSEN62305 and 17th Edition of the Wiring Regulations This new standard replaced BS6651 and it is now mandatory to fit a lightning current arrester on main incoming panels which are situated in buildings with external lightning conductors or fed by an overhead line. This type of arrester is designated as a Type 1, we recommend a combined T1+T2+T3 arrester as this gives additional surge protection for no added cost. The minimum discharge capability for a T1 arrester has to be 50Ka 10/350μs. Panels or sub-distboards feeding external circuits such as car park lighting, CCTV etc should also have a combined T1+T2+T3 arrester fitted as standard. For panels and sub boards in buildings without external lightning conductors and fed by underground cables a T2 surge arrester is sufficient. Sub-distribution boards or local control panels more than 10 metres from the main incomer and not feeding external circuits then a Type 2 surge arrester can be used. Final sub-circuits and sensitive electronic equipment, e.g. fire/burglar panels, PLC s which are fitted more than 10 metres from the last surge arrester should have a T3 surge arrester fitted at the panel or equipment to be protected. 5 Distribution of Lightning Current on a Building Structure General distribution of lightning current when a building is hit by lightning. LV power system protection thanks to cascaded 3-stage protection. Direct lightning strike (10/350) Lightning down conductor Lightning down conductor 50% enters electrical installation Is2 = max 100kA (10/350) Earth Rod Goes to ground The diagram above shows a building fitted with external lightning protection. The maximum lightning strike of 200kA 10/350μs which can strike the building will dissipate through the external lightning conductor system, 50% will go to earth via the earth rods. The remaining 50% will enter the building directly on to the main incoming panel as the external lightning protection system is cross-bonded to the main incoming earth bar. This is why it is mandatory to install a T1+2+3 combined lightning and surge arrester on the main incoming panel. The maximum rating of a combined lightning and surge arrester is 100kA 10/350μs. If the building has sub-distribution boards more than 10 metres away from the incoming panel, these boards will require additional protection. Usually a Type 2 surge arrester is sufficient here unless you are feeding outside final circuits, when a combined Type surge arrester will have to be fitted. 12 Type 3 Compact Three Phase Surge Arrester With LED Indication is a three-phase surge arrester type 3 according to BSEN and BS7671 suitable for use in TNS, TNC and TT systems. These are parallel devices intended for protection of electronic appliances against impulse surge. All varistors are fitted with thermal fuses to prevent short and also permanent overloading.
