Software and Communication Tools No YEAR MODEL MODEL NUMBER SERIAL NUMBER 2009 (except fan cooled) GENERAL INFORMATION As a reference to predelivery inspection bulletin, this service publication provides instructions about B.U.D.S. software and B.U.D.S. communication tools. It contains general practices to connect B.U.D.S.toavehicleandcanbeusedasareference for preparing vehicles before delivery to customers. For additional information, refer to the following: Use B.U.D.S. software help menu which contains detailed information on its functions. BRP'sGuide to Service Fundamentals and Principles, Chapter 9, (P/N ). As a reminder, always use the latest version of B.U.D.S. that can be downloaded from BOSSWeb ( Note that two different MPI (Multi-Purpose Interface) can be used with B.U.D.S. software: MPI-1 and MPI-2. On MY2009 vehicles, it is recommended to use only the MPI-2 technology for best performance and reliability. MPI-1 interface is still working but soon it will not be supported. 2 SUPPLY T-HARNESS MPI V BATTERY SUPPLY CABLE OPTIONAL EXTENSION CABLE DESS POST INTERFACE DIAGNOSTIC CABLE MPI-2 Power Supply MPI-2 The MPI-2 uses the USB power of the PC computer for its supply. DESS Post Interface The DESS post interface can use the vehicle power for its supply. Two AA batteries or an AC/DC power supply can also be used. Make sure to respect the interface specification if a power supply is used. 2 / SERVICE

3 Connections with Vehicle Using MPI-2 WARNING If the computer you are using is connected to the power outlet, there is a potential risk of electrocution when working in contact with water. Be careful not to touch water while working with the computer. except 600HO SDI and TEC 1. Remove 6 pin connector from the protective cap on the right side of vehicle msi _a 1. Supply T-harness 2. Vehicle 6-pin connector 3. Diagnostic cable mmr _a TYPICAL - 500SS, 600, 600 E-TEC, 800R 6-PIN CONNECTOR NOTICE Always use the supply T-harness. Connecting diagnostic cable directly to vehicle 6-pin connector (without supply T-harness) may lead to an incomplete data transfer. 4. Connect MPI-2 (P/N ) to diagnostic cable. mmr _a TYPICAL-V-8004-TEC6-PINCONNECTOR 2. Connect supply T-harness (P/N ) to vehicle 6-pin connector. 3. Connect diagnostic cable (P/N ) to supply T-harness connector. mmr _a MPI-2 CONNECTION 5. Connect remaining MPI-2 connector to the USB port of a PC (personnal computer). SERVICE / 6

4 9. Remove 6-pin connector from the protective cap on the right side of vehicle. mmr Connect supply T-harness to a 12 V battery, using 12 V battery supply cable (P/N ). NOTE: The 12 V battery allows to activate solenoids, spark plugs, etc., from B.U.D.S. activation tab. In this case, all sensors and actuators will be continuously supplied from battery. The ECM will switch the circuit to ground when activated through B.U.D.S. If engine starting is required, disconnect clips from battery. It is not recommended to use a 9 V battery. NOTICE Ensure to respect polarity when connecting cable clips to battery. Match RED cables together. 7. Use B.U.D.S. software as described further in B.U.D.S. SOFTWARE. NOTE: Some components will generate heat when leaving vehicle in diagnostic mode for a long period. Always disconnect MPI supply harness and supply cable from vehicle/battery when not working on vehicle. NOTE It is suggested to disconnect headlights fuse and to turn off heated grips to reduce battery discharge rate. On manual start models, it is necessary to use an external 12 V battery and to connect the 12 V battery supply cable clips on it to supply ECM and sensors/actuators. On electric start models, it is necessary to connect the 12 V battery supply cable clips to the vehicle battery to supply ECM and sensors/actuators. 600HO SDI and TEC 8. 5 A33C5KA MPI-1PROTOCOLONLY Step 1: Select MPI from the top menu and then CHOOSE SPEED. Step 2: Click on mmr _a MPI-2 CONNECTION B.U.D.S. SOFTWARE B.U.D.S. (Bombardier Utility and Diagnostic Software) is designed to program key(s), to allow electrical component inspection, diagnostic options and adjustments such as the closed throttle. Ensure to use the latest B.U.D.S. version available on BOSSWeb. On the MPI-2, LEDs on enclosure will blink to indicate that data is being exchanged with the vehicle. On applicable models, ensure to turn ignition switch ON and set engine switch to RUN to activate the communication. If you are using an old PC computer with the MPI-1, it may be necessary to use a slower speed so that the communication works. MPI-2 Communication NOTE: It is recommended to use MPI-2 with these vehicles but both (MPI-1 and MPI-2) will work. NOTE: The following procedure is for MPI-2, however, if MPI-1 protocol is used, the procedure will be the same except that it will be necessary to set the speed in the CHOOSE SPEED menu. In this case, the speed is not automatically adjusted. 1. Select MPI from the top menu and then CHOOSE PROTOCOL. 2. Click on KW2000 mmr Ensure the status bar shows KW2000 with the number 2 to its right. NOTE: Number 2 means that 2 ECU are connected (ECM and multifunction gauge). F18H0XA kw2000 CONNECTION SUCCESSFUL ECM AND MULTIFUNCTION GAUGE ARE CONNECTED NOTE: If the vehicle is not equipped with a multifunction gauge, the number 1 will appear instead of number If an X is shown, this means that no communication between MPI and ECM and/or multifunction gauge takes place. Possible causes are: ECM is not powered-up Multifunction gauge is not powered-up Wrong protocol is used Bad connection between MPI and module. SERVICE / 6

6 5. Press the READ DATA button from the tool bar to initiate communication with vehicle. vmr _aen 6. The MPI-2 LEDs on enclosure will blink to indicate that data is being exchanged with vehicle. vdd / SERVICE
