Not like those most field-bus automation networks use a form of daisy-chain topology, Ethernet automation asked those controllers, meters and gauges to form as a star to connect to each other. That is, an Ethernet switch must be implemented somehow in the middle or away of those field devices, just to use every port of that switch. 2 Efficient Ethernet Device Connectivity The built-in Ethernet switch ports of the iologik E1200 are also capable of cascading another Ethernet device at the same location. Usually the situation is somehow a remote site along with few sensors, devices, and Internet connectivity. Take a roadside cabinet as an example, the IP Cam keeps monitoring the streets and an Ethernet I/O is handling the environmental monitoring, intrusion, and the alarm of the cabinet, and triggering the snapshot at the IP Cam. Traditional approach in such remote monitoring application requires an additional switch/hub in order to connect the Ethernet I/O and the IP CAM together, which makes the system failure points and the total cost increasing. Better approach to these applications connecting another Ethernet device such as a PLC controller or an IPC in the same cabinet is to use the embedded industrial switch in the iologik E1200 series. Not only it reduces the failure points of an additional switch/hub, but also cut the wiring of the power, signal, and network. Space of the cabinet can also be saved. If not all the input or output are being used, it requires for twice or more polling to get all the channel status just because the address are not continuous.
