9 NS-480 Dense Storage Cabling Verification Guide! This guide provides information about the capacity and configuration of NS-480 dense storage systems and the steps to verify factory-installed cables, powering up the system, and running the Celerra Startup ssistant (CS): Overview Verify factory cabling Power up and EMC Celerra Startup ssistant IMPORTNT Read this document first before using it to verify the system cabling. When directed, refer to the EMC Celerra NS-480 System Installation Guide that was delivered with your system to complete the installation. NS-480 Dense Storage Cabling Verification Guide 9

10 NS-480 Dense Storage Cabling Verification Guide Overview The NS-480 dense storage system provides disk-array enclosures (DEs) that are mounted in a unique tandem design, which permits two DEs in one 3U drawer. This configuration doubles the storage density from 15 drives per 3U (standard configuration) to 30 drives per 3U (dense configuration). See Figure 1. Drawer 0 F0-0 Front Rear Rear Front Drawer 11 F3-4 F2-4 F1-4 F0-4 F3-2 F2-2 F1-2 F0-2 F3-0 F2-0 F1-0 SPS Control Station R0-1 Storage processor lade enclosure lade enclosure R3-5 R2-5 R1-5 R0-5 R3-3 R2-3 R1-3 R0-3 R3-1 R2-1 R1-1 Cabinet front Cabinet rear NS-480 dense storage cabinet (42U) CNS Figure 1 Dense storage configuration t 42U, the dense cabinet is 2U taller than a standard 40U cabinet and uses tandem rails for the DE drawers. These rails, which do not fit in a standard cabinet, allow you to pull out the drawer to access the DE at the rear of the drawer for easy maintenance. See Figure 1. This design uses a cable track assembly to manage the movement of cables when the drawer is extended. The dense cabinet features a thermal design that draws in ambient air from the front of the drawer and exhausts heated air through the rear of the drawer for maximum cooling. This design supports 10K or 15K RPM Fibre Channel (FC) drives only in the first DE (F0-0 in Figure 1) and only for the vault drives and a hot spare. The ten non-vault slots within F0-0 can house Enterprise Flash Drive (EFD) or Serial dvanced Technology ttachment (ST) drives. Non-vault DEs must use 7200-RPM ST or EFD drives, or 5400-RPM ST drives. Figure 1 shows the maximum configuration for the NS-480 dense storage system, which includes 24 DEs mounted in 12 tandem drawers (see Maximum configuration on page 11). The minimum configuration would contain only the components listed in Minimum configuration on page EMC Celerra Network Server NS-480 Dense Storage Cabling Verification Guide

11 NS-480 Dense Storage Cabling Verification Guide The actual system configuration will vary depending on the number of DE pairs ordered for your system. Minimum configuration The minimal NS-480 dense storage configuration includes: One 42U dense cabinet One Control Station One blade enclosure with two blades (see lade configuration on page 12) One storage processor enclosure (SPE) with two storage processors (SPs) (see Minimum SP I/O configuration on page 13) One standby power supply (SPS) enclosure with two standby power supplies One tandem DE drawer with a pair of DEs (F0-0 and F0-1) Maximum configuration The maximum NS-480 dense storage configuration includes: One 42U dense cabinet One Control Station Two blade enclosures with two blades in each enclosure (see lade configuration on page 12) One SPE with two SPs (see Maximum SP I/O configuration on page 13) One SPS enclosure with two standby power supplies Twelve tandem DE drawers for a total of 24 DEs (see Figure 1 on page 10) Overview 11

12 NS-480 Dense Storage Cabling Verification Guide lade configuration! Three blade types are available for NS-480 dense storage configurations: Four 1-GbE copper ports (top blade in Figure 2) Two 1-GbE copper ports and two 1-GbE optical ports (middle blade in Figure 2) Two 1-GbE copper ports and two 10-GbE optical ports (bottom blade in Figure 2) IMPORTNT Each blade enclosure in an NS-480 dense storage system must use the same blade type. You cannot mix blade types within a system. These DE connections occur on an FC coupler device at the rear of the first four DE drawers (drawers 0, 1, 2, and 3). To view an illustration of the FC coupler, see Figure 6 on page 18. 18 NS-480 Dense Storage Cabling Verification Guide Verify DE FC connections cable track assembly contains the FC cables that connect each pair of factory-installed DEs, front to rear. The DE at the front of each drawer expands (via ports) to the primary () ports of the DE at the rear of the drawer. ecause the front and rear DEs are on the same backend bus, the two DEs form a single 30-disk DE pair. Labels and DE numbering The cable track assembly also contains FC cables that connect the ports of the rear DE in a drawer to the FC coupler inputs of the next DE pair on the same bus. label on the front of each drawer identifies the DEs contained in the drawer. The prefix F or R appears on the label to identify front and rear DEs in the drawer. For example, F0-0 identifies the DE at the front of the drawer; R0-1 identifies the DE at the rear of the drawer. The first number after the prefix identifies the backend bus; the second number identifies the DE on that bus. For example, F0-2 identifies backend bus 0, DE 2. label on the FC coupler at the rear of a drawer also identifies the backend bus (for example, E 3). Wrap-around labels are provided for backend bus cables that connect the DEs. See Figure 6. Note: Figure 6 is an example of the labeling and numbering method that is used in dense storage systems. While this method is consistent for all dense storage systems, your system may have a different number of backend buses and DEs.
