2 Mission Provide clear and tangible value to our stakeholders by helping to reduce damages to North America s underground infrastructure. The CGA works cooperatively, fostering a sense of shared responsibility to enhance safety and protect underground facilities by: Identifying and disseminating the stakeholder best practices; Developing and conducting public awareness and education programs; Sharing and disseminating damage prevention tools and technology; and Serving as the premier resource for damage and one call center data collection, analysis and dissemination.

3 Common Ground Alliance - History 1998: Congress passes Transportation Equity Act for the 21 st Century which codifies 1) mandatory adoption and implementation by all states of a state one-call notification programs and 2) a study of existing one-call system practices. 1999: 160 stakeholders participate in Common Ground study which results in the publication of 132 Best Practices on underground facility damage prevention with consensus support from all involved. 2000: The Common Ground Alliance is established to support industry efforts to continue the implementation and development of the Damage Prevention Best Practices.

4 Common Ground Alliance - History 2002: The Pipelines Safety Improvement Act of 2002 mandates a national abbreviated dialing number for utility location coordination services. 2005: The Federal Communications Commission designated 811 the universal number. 2007: The Call 811 public awareness campaign was officially launched.

Traffic to Call811.com was up significantly compared to 2016, indicating great public interest in digging projects, 811 and safe digging practices. Increased visits to Call811.com led to nearly 43,000 departures from the website DIRECTLY to a one-call center website or online ticketing platform.
