Integrating with BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management

Overview To integrate a Performance Manager into BMC ProactiveNet, you need to first install and configure the solution in BMC Portal, automatically enable the application classes and create a specific adapter. An adapter for BMC Portal facilitates pulling of performance data from existing BMC Portal solutions into BMC ProactiveNet. Using an Adapter, you can import BMC Portal application classes (provided in a Performance Manager PM) into BMC ProactiveNet. The Adapter periodically synchronizes the performance data collected by these application classes into BMC ProactiveNet. Integration with BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management 44

Adapter added to the Adapters folder We strongly recommend that you create a specific adapter for each PM you need to integrate into BMC ProactiveNet to enable the update of a single PM independently. Once created and imported, the Adapter will be displayed in the Devices folder of the BMC ProactiveNet Operations Console. Managing Baselines and Key Performance Indicators In order to facilitate the detection of abnormalities on your monitored environment, BMC ProactiveNet calculates baselines per parameter (metrics or attributes) based on values collected over a specified period of time to determine a normal operating range. When the collected values for these parameters are out of range, an alert is triggered. Some parameters are identified by default as Key Performance Indicators and therefore automatically included in the base lining calculation. Creating and Importing an Adapter for a BMC Portal Solution To see the class instances that have been imported by the Adapter, expand the Adapters folder, right-click the Adapter and select Details.

Managing baselines The baseline is the expected normal operating range for a metric or attribute of a monitor. The baseline is calculated by collecting the values for a monitor s attributes and metrics over a specified time period and establishing a low baseline value (consisting of the 10th percentile of all the values for a given time period) and a high baseline value (consisting of the 90th percentile of all the values for a given time period), taking a weighted average of these values over time. A higher weight is given to the latest data being factored into the baseline average. The accuracy of the baseline improves over time. Requirements for baseline generation For baselines to be generated for an attribute, that abnormality threshold means that the threshold exists and is not suppressed. Additionally, if the Key Performance Indicator (KPI) mode is active, only those attributes that have an active abnormality threshold and are also KPI attributes will have baselines generated for them. Absolute thresholds (with "outside baseline") or signature thresholds do not satisfy these requirements. The KPI attribute of a parameter can be activated or deactivated manually through the BMC ProactiveNet Administration Console. In this PM, some parameters or attributes have been designated as important indicators of performance (KPIs). We do not recommend that these default settings are modified. However, advanced users may activate or deactivate KPIs from the BMC ProactiveNet Administration Console. To add or remove Key Performance Indicator (KPI) attributes for a monitor type 1. In the Administration Console, from the menu bar, choose Tools > KPI Administration. The KPI Administration dialog box is displayed. 2. From the Monitor Type list, choose the monitor type for which you want to add or remove KPI attributes. A list of attributes for the selected monitor type is displayed. 3. In the KPI column for the attributes that you want to add or remove as Key Performance Indicators: select the KPI check box to add the corresponding attribute as a KPI deselect the KPI check box to remove the corresponding attribute from the KPIs for that monitor type 55 Managing Baselines and Key Performance Indicators Managing Key Performance Indicators

For complete and detailed information on this procedure, please refer to the BMC ProactiveNet documentation available from BMC Web site. Parameters for which the system by default calculates baselines as well as parameters considered as KPIs are respectively identified by the following icons: Baselining KPI Managing Baselines and Key Performance Indicators 56

This document assumes that the user knows how to use the Portal and therefore explains procedures only related to BMC Performance Manager Express for Hitachi Disk Arrays, and not on how to add Elements, Element Profiles etc. Please refer to the BMC Portal documentation for details on how to use the Portal. In order to visualize the activity of a disk array, use the Read Byte Rate and Write Byte Rate of the Disk Array application class. These parameters represent the overall traffic in megabytes per second for each monitored array, or more precisely, each Hitachi disk array that is exposed through the Hitachi Device Manager (see the Installing Hitachi Device Manager section of the Installation Guide for more information about the Hitachi Device Manager). 61 Viewing the Overall Activity of a Disk Array

1. Click the Status tab in Portal 2. Click the array icon in the tree view to visualize its current activity Visualizing the current activity Visualizing the activity of the disk array The overall activity can also be reported in GB per hour or per day (instead of MB/sec) so SAN administrators can visualize how much data has been written to or read off the disk array each hour of the day or each day of the week (see the Reporting the total traffic on an hourly or daily basis section for more information on this subject). Viewing the Overall Activity of a Disk Array Click the Transfer Byte Rate graph icons to visualize the activity of the disk array in the past hours or days.

Reporting the Total Traffic on an Hourly or Daily Basis BMC Performance Manager Express for Hitachi Disk Arrays not only monitors the traffic and activity of the disk array, controllers, LUNs and physical disks in MB/sec, but also in GB per hour or per day. The exact amount of data that was read or written to the disk array, LUN or physical disk is calculated for each hour of the day and each day of the week. The Transfer Byte Rate parameter in MB/s is accompanied by a non-rate one in GB (Transfer Bytes). These parameters are cumulative : their instantaneous value has no meaning and they need to be visualized in a long period of time. 1. Click the Status tab in Portal 2. When viewing the status of the disk array, controller, LUN or physical disk, click on the graph icon of the Transfer Bytes parameter. Reporting the Total Traffic 63 Reporting the Total Traffic on an Hourly or Daily Basis

3. Choose the 12, 24 or 48 hours timeframe to visualize an hourly report. Choose the 5 or more days timeframe to visualize a daily report Visualizing an hourly report Reporting a Disk Space Consumption SAN administrators want to make sure to be able to provision disk space for new servers when requested, as quickly as possible. The disk array itself may need additional disk space for specific features to work properly, like automatic snapshots, mirroring, etc. If thin provisioning is used, the remaining disk space becomes dramatically critical since the inability to allocate additional space to a LUN when requested by the subscriber host will lead to catastrophic data loss and corruption. The disk space used is permanently monitored for each storage pool. The Subscribed Capacity parameter of the Pool class represent the amount of disk space that has been made available to the subscriber hosts, or in other words, the amount of disk space that is seen by the servers connected to disk array. The Consumed Capacity parameter of the Storage Pools class represents the actual space usage in the storage pool. For thin pools (when thin provisioning is enabled on the disk array), this value is normally lower than the Subscribed Capacity, as it is the main purpose of thin Reporting the Total Traffic on an Hourly or Daily Basis 64 Making sure that a disk array has enough remaining disk space available is critical for several reasons:

provisioning. For traditional pools, the Consumed Capacity parameter has the same value as the Subscribed Capacity parameter, as the entirety of the subscribed disk space is fully allocated in the storage pool. The Consumed Capacity Percentage parameter is the most critical one as a storage pool usage nearing 100% means that SAN administrators will not be able to create new LUNs in the storage pool. By default, no alarm or warning threshold is set on this parameter as the fullness of a storage pool may be a normal situation. However, you can set alert thresholds on this parameter as it fits your needs. Verifying the Available Disk Space in the Storage Pool of your Hitachi Disk Arrays 1. In the Configure tab, select an element group in the tree view (the main Infrastructure group, for example) 2. Click on the Report tab. 3. Create a report for the last 24 hours, top 50 values of the Disk Array Storage Pools Storage Pool Consumed Capacity Percentage parameter of the Hitachi Disk Arrays application class for the BMC PM Express for Hitachi Disk Arrays by Sentry Software solution. Over time, as servers connected to a SAN get decommissioned, administrators find an increasing number of unmapped LUNs, or volumes that are no longer used by any server. These LUNs, while unused, still occupy disk space in the disk array. Being able to identify such unmapped LUNs and reclaim the disk space uselessly consumed by these LUNs will help administrators avoid unnecessary upgrades and extensions of their disk arrays. Identifying the Hosts that can Access a LUN In most SAN configuration, each LUN belongs to a storage group whose host members are the only ones authorized to access the LUN. This is called LUN masking. For each LUN, the solution displays its WWN, the storage group to which it belongs to as well as the hosts member of this group. In most cases, identifying the storage group of a LUN is sufficient to recognize the server that is using it. 65 Reporting a Disk Space Consumption Reclaiming Space of Unmapped (Unused) LUNs

Setting Thresholds Whenever relevant, BMC Performance Manager Express for Hitachi Disk Arrays automatically sets thresholds for parameters. If you prefer a more fault-tolerant monitoring, you can modify the thresholds of each parameter through the Configure tab > Edit Thresholds. 1. To modify the parameter thresholds of several storage objects of an element, click on the Storage (<platform>) icon in the Configure tab > Thresholds, Properties and Credentials > Edit. or To modify the thresholds of a particular instance, click on the instance icon > Thresholds, Properties and Credentials > Edit. Thresholds, Properties and Credentials Setting Thresholds 66

Click Edit to modify the thresholds. Any modification to the thresholds or any other properties of elements created using the "Element Profile" mode is to be done using the Element Profile route or by clicking "Override Profile" 2. Disable the alert conditions in the Status parameter, i.e. un-check the boxes for Warning and Alarm. Disabling the default alert thresholds on Status Disable the alerts on the Status parameter by un-checking the boxes 3. Enable the alert conditions on the parameter ('Status' in the image below) by checking the boxes, and manually enter the threshold values and then click Save. Modifying threshold values 67 Setting Thresholds

Manually modify the thresholds on the parameter and activate the alerts 4. The "Success, changes have been saved" message indicates that the modifications have been registered. Alerts are displayed by the parameter whose thresholds are modified. Enabling the Debug Mode By default, BMC Performance Manager Express for Hitachi Disk Arrays sends only the most critical information, warning and error messages to the Application Collection Status parameter. Most often, this information is accurate enough to ensure that BMC Performance Manager Express for Hitachi Disk Arrays is functioning properly. If you encounter an issue and wish to report it to customer support, you will be asked to enable the Debug Mode and provide the debug output to the support team. 1. In the Configure tab > click the Element whose debug output you require. 2. Scroll down to Application Classes > click the Application class that you want to enable the debug mode > click Edit. 3. Select Yes from the drop-down Debug Mode list > Save. By default, BMC Performance Manager Express for Hitachi Disk Arrays sends its debug output to: %RSM_HOME%/RSM(xx)/server/rsm/log/sen_hds_debug_hostname.log". 4. Wait for 15 minutes and then disable the debug mode by selecting No. 5. Send the debug file to the support team. Troubleshooting Connectivity Issues BMC Performance Manager Express for Hitachi Disk Arrays leverages the Hitachi Device Manager. Because some connectivity issues may exist and cause BMC Performance Manager Express for Hitachi Disk Arrays to fail, it is highly recommended to test the connection to the Hitachi Device Manager before contacting the Sentry Support Team. To troubleshoot connectivity issues: 1. Download the connection tool required from the Sentry Software Website (Downloads section of your product). Please note that the connection tool requires Java v1.6 or higher. 2. Run the command java -jar <Connection_Tool_Name.jar> to launch the connection tool. 3. Enter the information required to connect to the system and click Test Connection. 4. Wait for the test to complete. If a connectivity issue is detected, an error message will appear. In this case, the issue encountered does not concern BMC Performance Manager Express for Hitachi Disk Arrays. Check your configuration to diagnose the source of the issue. 5. Click Save As to export the connection test results into a txt file. You can then send this information to the Sentry Support Team. Setting Thresholds 68 Pay attention to the file size -the debug output of BMC Performance Manager Express for Hitachi Disk Arrays could be very large if enabled for several days
