To ensure an accurate time information, it is recommended to synchronize them both. 8

Overview

is an agent-less Performance Manager for the BMC Portal environment. It allows you to automatically discover and monitor every aspect of EMC disk arrays, from the general health of the array to the performance of the LUNs and from the file systems space usage to the mirroring and snapshots mechanisms latency; and to consolidate diverse monitoring needs within the Portal framework through a single solution. To setup a complete monitoring of the disk array, we strongly recommend you to also use BMC Performance Manager Express for Hardware that covers all the physical aspect of the disk array (status of the disks, ports, temperature, power supplies, power consumption, etc). Being a Performance Manager specifically designed for BMC Portal, BMC Performance Manager Express for EMC Disk Arrays uses the Portal s web-based interface and features for installing, managing and monitoring your infrastructure. 10

Getting Started

This chapter describes the prerequisites and the procedures you must perform before installing BMC Performance Manager Express for EMC Disk Arrays. Please follow the given instructions carefully in order to ensure a successful integration of the solution within the Portal environment. Minimum Requirements The computer on which you install should already have: BMC Performance Manager Portal version Access to an RSM i.e. Remote Service Monitor The RSM program must be installed on a Windows platform. This can either be same as the server where the Portal is installed or, any other Windows computer on the network. Once you install, you can add as many elements as you require in your monitoring environment. Enabling the statistics On EMC Clariion and VNX storage systems, the statistics need to be enabled to allow BMC Performance Manager Express for EMC Disk Arrays to collect statistics and to monitor performance. Using Navisphere In Navisphere, enable Statistics logging: Open Navisphere Right-click the icon for the storage system Click Properties. Be sure SP A and SP B are in the Storage Processors section Click the box for Statistics Logging under the Configuration section For locally attached CLARiiONs, check if authorization info is present Run the dv command from EMC TestSMIProvider. Make sure all arrays are discovered without any errors Make sure performance is turned on in the Profile for storage arrays Make sure there are instances for the CIM_BlockStorageStatisticalData class: Run Tek-Tools testprovider or EMC s testsmiprovider Type ein for command Type CIM_BlockStorageStatisticalData for Class Name If no instances are returned, reset EMC Provider Once complete, resume steps 1-3. If y ou are using a v ersion older than SMIKit , the EMC SMI-S Prov ider does not recognize changes in the array when a LUN or R A ID Group is created or deleted from Nav isphere. It is thus recommended to upgrade y our EMC SMIS Prov ider to v ersion or higher to benefit from the auto-sy nchronization mechanism set by default to one hour after the last update. If y ou do not upgrade y our EMC SMI-S Prov ider, y ou will hav e to run the refsy s command from testsmiprov ider each time y ou create or delete LUN or R A ID groups from Nav isphere. 12

User Guide

monitors all of the performance metrics and usage statistics of your EMC disk arrays, such as file disk space usage, storage controller utilization, I/ Os on the disks/controllers/volumes, etc. It continuously monitors the activity of each array and is also able to build reports on past utilization statistics. To setup a complete monitoring of the array, we strongly recommend you to also use BMC Performance Manager Express for Hardware that covers all the physical aspect of the EMC disk arrays (status of the disks, ports, temperature, power supplies, power consumption, etc). This chapter explains how to use each monitoring tool i.e. a separate application class within the BMC Performance Manager Express for EMC Disk Arrays by Sentry Software solution. is a Performance Manager specifically designed for BMC Portal; consequently, it uses the same common features and procedures of BMC Portal. This document assumes that the user knows how to use the Portal and therefore explains procedures only related to, and not on how to add Elements, Element Profiles etc. Please refer to the BMC Portal documentation for details on how to use the Portal. Checking Available Spare Disks To avoid any loss of critical data, it is essential for a disk array to always maintain a pool of spare disks that can replace the faulty disk when a disk failure occurs. A disk array without any left spare disk will not be able to keep the level of data safety and performance in case of a disk failure. The Spare Disk Count parameter of the SEN_EMC_ARRAY class reports the number of spare disks available for each disk array monitored with the solution. By default, a warning is triggered when no spare disk is available (Spare Disk Count is set to zero). Verifying the Number of Available Spare Disks in Your EMC Disk Arrays 37

1. 2. Select an element group in the tree view (the main Infrastructure group, for example) Click the Reports tab. Create a report for the last 24 hours, bottom 50 values of the Array Spare Disk Count parameter of the EMC Disk Arrays application class for the BMC Performance Manager Express for EMC Disk Arrays by Sentry Software solution. R e p o rt A v a ila ble Sp a re Dis k s Detecting Oversubscription Situations (Thin Provisioning) We call an oversubscription situation when: The storage pool is configured for thin provisioning ( thin storage pool ) The storage pool is oversubscribed, i.e. the total disk space visible to the hosts (subscribers) is greater than its actual capacity (this situation is normal for a thin pool since it is its very purpose) The storage pool actual consumed capacity is nearing 100% Such situation is highly critical because the inability to allocate additional space to a LUN when requested by the subscriber host will lead to catastrophic data loss and corruption. When the conditions described above are met, the solution sets the Oversubscription Situation parameter to 1, automatically raising a warning. By default, the warning for Oversubscription Situation is issued when the Consumed Capacity Percentage parameter goes above 100%. This threshold can be configured in the input properties of the solution. Checking Available Spare Disks 38

Configuring Oversubscription Threshold Click the EMC Disk Arrays icon and then the Configure tab. Edit the Oversubscription Situation Threshold (%) property to the appropriate value. When the Oversubscription Situation parameter triggers a warning, it is highly recommended that the SAN administrators add capacity to the storage pool as soon as possible. Diagnosing Slow LUNs If a system administrator complains that his servers are experiencing slow I/Os performance and that it is caused by the SAN, you may want to verify the actual response time of the LUNs the server is relying on. The Response Time parameter of the SEN_EMC_VOLUME class represents the average time it took to complete the read and write operations on the LUN during the collection interval. Typically, the average response time is below 10 milliseconds. You may also want to compare this value to the response time of the other LUNs to see whether one server is really getting worse I/O performance than another. Vo lum e - R e s p o ns e T im e Pa ra m e te r If the response time is low, you will need to check the amount of data that is written and read on this LUN. The bad performance may simply be due to an abnormally large amount of data to process. Otherwise, the problem is maybe between the disk array and the server, in the fiber links. Detecting Oversubscription Situations (Thin Provisioning) 39

Enabling the Debug Mode By default, sends only the most critical information, warning and error messages to the Application Collection Status parameter. Most often, this information is accurate enough to ensure that BMC Performance Manager Express for EMC Disk Arrays is functioning properly. If you encounter an issue and wish to report it to customer support, you will be asked to enable the Debug Mode and provide the debug output to the support team. 1. In the Configure tab >, under Tasks, click Elements 2. Select the Element whose debug output you require and click Edit. 3. Scroll down to Application Classes > click the Application class for which you want to enable the debug mode > click Edit. 4. Select Yes from the drop-down Debug Mode list > Save By default, sends its debug output to: % RSM_HOME%/RSM(xx)/server/rsm/log/sen*_debug.log". 5. Wait for 15 minutes and then disable the debug mode by selecting No. 6. Send the debug file to the support team. Pay attention to the file size -the debug output of BMC Performance Manager Ex press for EMC Disk A rray s could be v ery large if enabled for sev eral day s. Identifying the Hosts that can Access a LUN In most SAN configurations, each LUN belongs to a storage group whose host members are the only ones authorized to access the LUN. This is called LUN masking. For each LUN, the solution displays its WWN, the storage group to which it belongs to as well as the hosts member of this group. In most cases, identifying the storage group of a LUN is sufficient to recognize the server that is using it. Enabling the Debug Mode 40

Identifying LUNs not Owned by their Normal (Default) Storage Processor The Owning Storage Processor parameter reports the name of the controller that handles I/Os for each LUN. If a LUN is not currently handled by its normal (default) storage processors, the name of the default controller will be indicated as SP_B (default: SP_A). To identify LUNs that are not owned by their normal storage processor, you simply need to list the Volume objects where the Owning Storage Processor parameter contains the string Default. Identifying Most Busy LUNs To identify the LUNs that generate the most traffic on the disk array, use the Read Byte Rate and Write Byte Rate parameters of the LUN class that expose the data throughput for each LUN. Use these parameters to report on the total data traffic (per hour or per day) on each LUN in GB. To make sure that traffic is display ed cumulativ ely per hour, select a time window of at least 12 hours in the graph window, select at least 7 day s to v isualize per day cumulativ e data. 1. In the Status tab, click the Volume for which you need to check the LUNs activity, then expand the LUNs object to display the Read/Write Byte Rate parameters. You can customize the chart and table to show parameter history for different time periods. Identifying Most Busy LUNs 42

Vie wing a LUNs R e a d /W rite By te R a te a s a g ra p h Identifying a Storage Processor (Controllers) Overload To visualize the activity of a controller in an EMC disk array, use the Processor Utilization parameter of the SEN_EMC_CONTROLLER class. A warning is issued when the processor utilization goes too high, which means that the controllers cannot keep up with the load on the disk array. It is then important to identify what is overloading the controllers. The Response Time parameter of the SEN_EMC_CONTROLLER class represents the average time it took the controller to process the read and write requests of the hosts. The higher the Response Time goes, the slower I/Os the servers will get. By default, the solution triggers a warning when the controller takes more than 10 milliseconds on average to complete the I/O requests and an alarm when the response time reaches 100 milliseconds. Monitoring the Efficiency of the Caching Mechanism Each controller in an EMC disk array can be configured to use a specified amount of memory to cache the read and/or write operations. The solution reports the amount of memory configured by each controller for the read and write operations. The Write Flush Byte Rate represents the rate in MB/sec at which data is committed to the disk (i.e. physically written). This value is to be compared with the Write Byte Rate of the disk array. 45 Reclaiming Space of Unmapped (Unused) LUNs Over time, as servers connected to a SAN get decommissioned, administrators find an increasing number of unmapped LUNs, or volumes that are no longer used by any server. These LUNs, while unused, still occupy disk space in the disk array. Being able to identify such unmapped LUNs and reclaim the disk space uselessly consumed by these LUNs will help administrators avoid unnecessary upgrades and extensions of their disk arrays. Reporting a Disk Space Consumption Making sure that a disk array has enough remaining disk space available is critical for several reasons: SAN administrators want to make sure to be able to provision disk space for new servers when requested, as quickly as possible. The disk array itself may need additional disk space for specific features to work properly, like automatic snapshots, mirroring, etc. If thin provisioning is used, the remaining disk space becomes dramatically critical since the inability to allocate additional space to a LUN when requested by the subscriber host will lead to catastrophic data loss and corruption. The disk space used is permanently monitored for each storage pool. The Subscribed Capacity parameter of the Pool class represents the amount of disk space that has been made available to the subscriber hosts, or in other words, the amount of disk space that is seen by the servers connected to disk array. The Consumed Capacity parameter of the SEN_EMC_STORAGEPOOLS class represents the actual space usage in the storage pool. For thin pools (when thin provisioning is enabled on the disk array), this value is normally lower than the Subscribed Capacity, as it is the main purpose of thin provisioning. For traditional pools, the Consumed Capacity parameters has the same value as the Subscribed Capacity parameter, as the entirety of the subscribed disk space is fully allocated in the storage pool. The Consumed Capacity Percentage parameter is the most critical one as a storage pool usage nearing 100% means that SAN administrators will not be able to create new LUNs in the storage pool. By default, no alarm or warning threshold is set on this parameter as the fullness of a storage pool may be a normal situation. However, you can set alert thresholds on this parameter as it fits your needs. Reclaiming Space of Unmapped (Unused) LUNs 45

R e p o rt Dis k Sp a ce Co ns um p tio n Reporting the Total Traffic on an Hourly or Daily Basis not only monitors the traffic and activity of the disk array, controllers, LUNs and physical disks in MB/sec, but also in GB per hour or per day. The exact amount of data that was read or written to the disk array, LUN or physical disk is calculated for each hour of the day and each day of the week. Each data rate parameter in MB/sec is accompanied by a non-rate one in GB. These parameters are cumulative : their instantaneous value has no meaning and they need to be visualized in a long period of time. (instead of Read Byte Rate or Write Byte Rate). Viewing the Overall Activity of a Disk Array In order to visualize the activity of a disk array, use the Read Byte Rate and Write Byte Rate of the SEN_EMC_ARRAY class. These parameters represent the overall traffic in megabytes per second for each monitored array, or more precisely, each EMC disk array that is exposed through the EMC SMI-S Provider (see the EMC_SMI-S_Provider section of the Installation Guide for more information about the EMC SMI-S Provider).
