Recycle Orange En route for the circular economy Extraction of natural resources Manufacturers / Suppliers / Repairers Devices, components, spare parts Re-use Orange, a telecoms operator Buyer of technical equipment, distributor of handsets Customers / End-users Repair Recondition We are adapting our business model to ensure it consumes fewer natural resources and generates less waste, especially WEEE*. It s an approach that focuses on more virtuous modes of design, production, and consumption, partly by extending the lifespan of materials and re-using them. Orange is transforming, driven by a long-term vision, as explained in the following slides. * Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment
Until now, our activity mostly operated on a linear model: supply, distribution, use and end of life of devices and hardware. Orange offers its customers digital services (Voice, Internet, TV, etc.) and supplies the related terminals (phones, tablets, Livebox routers, connected objects, etc.) Orange buys technical equipment and handsets etc. from manufacturers Design, production and manufacture of hardware Extraction of natural resources Orange produces its services by using its technical infrastructure: fixed and mobile networks, datacenters, IS, etc. At the end of their useful lives, most of these products become waste (WEEE)
Though in a less critical manner than in many other industries, the ICT linear model also faces its limits (environmental impact, resources). More and more digital products and services are being consumed Global reserves at current consumption rate: Gold = 16 years Tin = 20 years Copper = 30 years Nickel = 40 years source Planetoscope x The increase in mobile data traffic in 10 years and ultimately generates more waste. 10 million metric tons of ICT WEEE worldwide in 2014 which calls for more natural resources, despite limited reserves source UN and requires more energy 5,837 GW/h in kg CO2 per Orange customer
This is why we are transforming our business model wherever we can in every part of the chain. 65% -70% Orange s certified ISO coverage at end-2016 Eco-design of services: after five years of using the Multiconnect Business service, savings of 10 tonnes of CO2 for a business equipped with 100 telephone handsets. By developing eco-design Progressive roll-out of software eco-design, for 15-20% energy savings By improving our operating methods Eco-design of products: Optimising Livebox and TV decoder packaging: 20% more product per pallet. Use of cardboard from sustainably managed forests and vegetable-based inks. Significant results already achieved -46% CO2 Reduction in our emissions per customer-use between 2006 and 2015 Energy savings made possible by server virtualisation in our datacenters (already 66% or our 90,000 servers) -92,000 metric tons of CO2 The annual saving generated by the 2,600 solar-powered mobile stations deployed Over 60,000 servers virtualised, for a metric tons reduction in hardware 80% Energy savings on air conditionning from optimised datacenter ventilation (free-cooling)
We are striving to extend the lifespan of our equipment and terminals and are contributing to the development of end-of-life hardware recovery and re-use sectors. 3,200 metric tons of WEEE recycled in 2015 Recycle Return a broken-down device to service after changing or repairing a component / spare part Remanufacture a device by changing components / spare parts in order to obtain a refurbished device. Reconditionner Repair 1,7 million mobile phones collected in % Target for used mobile collection in 2020 Recondition Break down used devices to recover secondary raw materials (plastics, rare metals ) from so-called "urban mines" Re-use Re-use an equipment that becomes a pre-owned equipment Collect
A programme of in-depth transformation that is mobilising a vast ecosystem. It is a long and complex task, that opens up a vast range of opportunities. 256 million individual customers Over 6, countries 153,000 employees 3,000 multinational business customers suppliers Growth drivers and job creation Environmental impacts minimised New business models based on shared usage Enhanced economic and environmental performance Easier access to digital services
