2 Two Areas of Opportunity Cleaning up IT 2% of global emissions related to ICT industry (Gartner). Leveraging our investment in IT to reduce greenhouse gas emissions i using IT to become more efficient and less wasteful 2

3 Monash in a nutshell We are a large research intensive University based in Melbourne Students t and staff Students 68,000 as measured by computer accounts Staff 17,000 as measured by computer accounts Campus footprint 6 in Melbourne South Africa and Malaysia (6000 students) Dozens of associated sites eg, hospitals Faculty footprint 10 faculties and lots of research groups Org units are responsible from the wallpoint ITS do all the central plumbing and applications 3

4 IT impact on the environment - Monash Electricity Usage Estimated $1.5 to $2m related to IT 15-25% of total University power consumption Data Centres house over 890 servers - very power intensive Number of devices PC s 18,000 with 3 year replacement cycle energy and e- waste impact Old telephones to be disposed of in next 2 years Associated resources - Data storage 300% growth in the last 18 months Paper 177,000 reams a year No E-waste or green procurement strategy 4

5 Monash Drivers who is pushing? Report under NGERS National Greenhouse Emissions Reporting Scheme. University has committed to carbon neutrality by 2010/2011 Vice Chancellor s Group Environment Committee : programs on waste, energy, transport, water, procurement and Green IT 5

9 Measurement Opportunities Current engagement with consultancy to establish what a Green IT program should be measuring, and how. KPMG due to finish early 2009 CAUDIT have asked if we can share and use as basis for sector wide benchmark Cover IT operations measurements, plus Best practice automation eg, how many paper transactions should HR still have 9

13 E-waste and Recycling Improve uptake of duplex printing - SOE with duplex and black and white options as default slow progress - pilot in student labs in 2009 Shared printers MFD standards Further the use of recycled paper VOIP - new PC based Fax service (reduce paper) and develop disposal strategy for obsolete fax machines. VOIP disposal of old phones offer to charity, resale, proper disposal 13

15 Energy Power saving measures in student computer laboratories Pilot "model" green labs EPEAT highest ratings PCs, power settings, default duplex printing, recycled paper, lighting Education campaign to encourage computer users to implement personal power saving measures (eg. turn off screen savers). Embed power save settings in new PC tender as default setting 4500 portal users per day on average (Semester time) 15

17 Transport Clayton campus is not well served by public transport Universities are warring tribal factions brought together with only one common interest. Parking! Currently have about 105 physical videoconferencing endpoints Project in 2008 to upgrade bridge and ITS endpoints and add some additional meetings rooms (South Africa) Implement Tandberg Management Suite for room based VC equipment that includes a travel and carbon savings calculator l 17

18 Transport Collaboration Strategy rolling out Lotus Notes with integrated Sametime (video) for PC based conferencing Will integrate with room based conferencing Research - promote use of EVO within the research community (a PC-based multipoint collaboration tool which features advanced videoconferencing) Flexible work arrangements eg from home. No way to measure but lots of it. Reasonable enabling tools eg portal, networked drives, Blackberry service 18

19 Procurement and Publicity Sustainability has been built into the contracts and purchasing processes for selected ICT equipment, notably servers, desktop and laptop PCs. Environmental criteria have been given a 30% weighting g for the tender for desktop and laptop PCs to be finalised in March 2009 A Green ICT web site and interactive blog Pondering a carbon footprint calculator for students on the my.monash portal 19
