2 Setting the Scene 14.84m Australians used the Internet in the past month Over 70% of users visited a social media site in the past month An annual growth for internet connections of 16.7% More than 4 in 10 Australians use mobile internet We know members of the public and businesses would prefer to interact with Government through the internet 4 in 5 would prefer to use the internet to access government services but only 2 in 5 used the internet for their most recent contact with the government How do we engage those other 2 in 5 to interact with us online?

Electronic Planning (eplanning) encompasses business process models, systems, services and technologies which support the operation of a holistic and efficient planning system What is out there today? 8 Current State Findings QLD Smart eda is in place and operational Lodgement (with some pre-lodgement) Fee calculation and payment (with some pre-lodgement) Referrals (wizard / rule based) Smart eda is in place for 18 councils in QLD Mackay now has >60% applications electronic submitted online Limited effort to switch on new councils Could operate as a single entry point for any council Councils have a mix of solutions They have vendor products and Smart eda for planning information, schemes, tracking and some for assessment Strategic Planning starting to using web 2.0 Toowoomba drafting using GEOQUIK Twitter, blogs etc

13 What have we found out? It costs to be different! If your are going to be different, is it worth it? Governments are financially constrained and have changing priorities Government can t do it all What is the core purpose of government in eplanning? Can the IT industry / business / community mash up solutions? Solutions must be fit for purpose Basic online services verses mature, integrated solutions Partnerships are essential Between federal, local and state governments on the same page Modular approaches and sharing the effort

14 What should we be doing? In Queensland Establish governance arrangements for eplanning Start working with each other on developing solutions Share experiences and learnings and solutions! Develop common online services for councils to implement (ie. rural) In your Council Identifying what services you could take online Ask your customers what services they would like online Undertake a readiness assessment for what you could do quickly As an Individual Embrace, Lead and Live the opportunities that new technology provides Its okay to say Wouldn t it be good if. and then do something about it!
