6 A project to fulfill the overall vision and objectives of IT Action Plan of the Government of Pakistan, launched in 2002 by the Ministry of Science & Technology, Pakistan. Aimed to be an integral part of the education system of the country. A dedicated digital communication network interlinking all public/private sector chartered universities/ degree awarding institutes. Provides integration of data banks, collaboration for research and development activities and up-gradation of teaching and learning skills. A network for research and at the same time research for future network Connectivity with Other Education and Research Networks worldwide. 6

27 Target Population General Pubic living in rural /remote areas of Pakistan Project Scope Telemedicine projects are meant to provide cost effective means for seeking consultation to citizens living in rural/remote areas of Pakistan. The scope of project includes advice and treatment to citizens living in rural/remote areas from specialist doctors based in big urban centre hospitals. Accordingly, the following three pilot projects have been initiated: 1. MoIT- HealthNet TM Project for Rural/Remote Areas in Sindh (JPMC) 2. MoIT- HealthNet TM Project for Rural/Remote Areas in Punjab (Mayo) 3. MoIT- HealthNet TM Project for Rural/Remote Areas in Punjab (Holy Family)

28 Qualitative improvement in healthcare facilities for the identified rural/remote areas. Availability of latest electronic medical equipment at remote hospitals identified for the project will facilitate early diagnosis of even complicated medical conditions and their effective treatment by specialist doctors without the need for patients to travel long distances just to seek consultations in urban canters. Real time monitoring of health problems and issues being faced by rural population which will allow the government to launch targeted and focused healthcare campaigns and programs. The project will also help in enhancing the professional capabilities of doctors serving in rural hospitals through frequent interaction with specialist doctors.
