4 IT s Contribution to the Climate Change 2 IT sector has only 1.5% share of Japanese CO2 emission (cf. only 5% of industrial sector). However, it contributes to CO2 reduction of other sectors such as transportation, residential, and other industries. 5 IT s Contribution to the Climate Change 3 GeSI (Global E-Sustainability Initiative) reports in June 2008; In 2020, IT sector will emit 2.8% of the global CO2 emission. However, IT can reduce 7.8 billion CO2-ton from BAU (business as usual) in This reduction equals 15% of BAU emission in 2020, and is 5 times as much as their own emission. 9 Establishment of the Green IT Award Green IT Promotion Council established the Green IT Award in 2008 to promote Green IT efforts by industry and academic bodies. 11 Cooperation with the U.S. and EU1 Japan s Green IT Promotion Council exchanged a MOU with U.S. three groups for cooperation. In February 2010, Japan, the U.S. and EU held the second government-private sector joint work shop for establishing new standards for a data center. 12 Cooperation with the U.S. and EU2 10 Green IT Promotion Council is cooperating with ICT4EE Forum in its activities, such as developing measurement methodologies. Green IT Promotion Council exchanged a MOU with BITKOM. It became effective on July 1st. Cooperating in Forum s activities MOU is under discussion MOU became effective on July 1 st 2010 Japan EU

13 Cooperation with Asia1 At the AEM-METI meeting in September 2008, METI proposed the Asia Knowledge Economy Initiative, which includes a futureoriented project on Green IT, making use of Japan s experiences. 14 Cooperation with Asia2-Asia Green IT Forum The First Asia Green IT Forum was held on October 6, 2009, bringing together delegates from governments and industries of eight Asian countries (Japan, China, Korea, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam). The participants issued a joint statement to enhance their future cooperation. 15 Cooperation with Asia3-Survey on Energy Saving by IT Survey on Energy Saving by IT The government of Japan provides Survey on Energy Saving by IT which utilizes Japanese high technology energy saving/control technologies in ASEAN countries. Japan side pays the cost. Member companies of Green IT Promotion Council conduct the survey. The survey is conducted on the following facilities. No. Facilities Outlines of survey 1 Data Center Facility survey / facility optimization planning / effectiveness monitoring / facility plan etc. 2 Public Facility (airport, school, hospital etc.) 3 Plant, Factory (petroleum industry, chemical industry, electric industry, paper/pulp industry, steel industry etc.) Air-conditioning operation and maintenance control / ventilation facility control / lighting facility control etc. Air-conditioning facility survey / fan & compressor survey / Operation and maintenance survey / efficiency survey / advanced control etc. - In January, facility managers had an energy saving training in Japan. 13

16 Cooperation with Asia4-Asia Green IT seminar 14 In February 2010, international seminars were held in Singapore and Thailand. 17 Tasks for the Future1 More and more people recognize that IT can contribute to reduction of GHG emission. However, people do not act without economic incentives. Measurement, report and verification (MRV) is the core concept in the climate change discussion. Benchmark is necessary for Green IT discussion. Without such tools, we cannot discuss incentives. It fails to reflect non-direct system which is popular in the Asia Pacific. Measures to assess the BEMS effect have not yet been established internationally. 15

18 Tasks for the Future2 ー Mechanism to Assess Contributions of Green IT We need a mechanism that provides accurate assessments of private sector efforts to proactively market energy-efficient products and services.
