3 Overview Overview The Graphing module provides a step-by-step wizard that lets you graph data from your SCT Banner database. Banner and Oracle Graphics work together seamlessly to perform the tasks necessary to produce various types of graphs. You can easily save a graph and re-run it at a later time. Some of the functions you can perform in the Graphing module are: 8 Graphing Design your own graphs. Build a custom graph based on a design delivered with Banner or on a design created at your institution. Display a saved graph. Oracle Graphics must be installed to use this module. Menu Navigation Table in the Graphing module can be accessed from the following menu: Graphing Menu (*GENGRAPH) GOAGWIZ Graphing Wizard Form Lets you build a custom graph based on a design delivered with Banner or on a design created at your institution. You can also display a saved graph. GOAGDEF Graphing Definition Form Lets you design your own graphs. 4 Graphing Wizard Form (GOAGWIZ) Note: You cannot access this form if you are using Banner through a Web browser. Use this form to build a custom graph or view an existing graph. You can build a custom graph based on a design delivered with Banner or on a design created at your institution with the Graphing Definition Form (GOAGDEF). The GOAGWIZ Form is mouse-navigable only. Oracle Graphics must be installed. In addition to access from the main menu, you can display this form with the Graph Information button on the Banner tool bar. This form is an easy-to-use wizard that guides you through the graph building process. See Building a Graph in Chapter 4, Processing, for specific details on using the wizard. Graphing Definition Form (GOAGDEF) Note: You cannot access this form if you are using Banner through a Web browser. Use this form to design your own graphs with the following components: Product name. You must identify the product (General, Student, Finance, Financial Aid, Human Resources, or Advancement). Functional area. Within a product, you must identify a functional area that has similar types of graphing information. For example, in the Finance product you might use functional areas such as General Ledger, Accounts Payable, and Accounts Receivable. Some functional areas have been defined for each product, but you can create new ones. Vertical axis. You must describe the information that is represented on the vertical axis. You can use a name such as Pledges for a single graph. Or you can use a name such as Pledges and Gifts for a graph that compares data. You can compare one, two, or three columns of data on the vertical axis. Horizontal axis. You must describe the information that is represented on the horizontal axis. Select statement. You must use an SQL*Plus statement to define the data set to be graphed for this combination of vertical and horizontal axes. You must follow special restrictions when building your statement. These restrictions are described in Defining a Data Set in Chapter 4, Processing, in this manual. Filter. Optionally, you can make specified data fields available for filtering. When you build the actual graph, filtering lets you limit the range of values to be graphed. General Release 6.0 May User Guide Confidential

5 These components not only define the data set to be graphed, but uniquely identify the data set so you can retrieve it when you are ready to build the actual graph with the Graphing Wizard Form (GOAGWIZ). The GOAGDEF Form is mouse-navigable only. Oracle Graphics must be installed. See Defining a Data Set in Chapter 4, Processing, for specific details on using this form. Main Window Select the product for the graph from the pull-down list in the Product field. Enter the functional area in the Area field, vertical axis label in the Vertical field, horizontal axis label in the Horizontal field, and select statement in the Define Graphing Select Statement block. Search buttons on the Area, Vertical, and Horizontal fields let you list and select an existing value. When you are in the Define Graphing Select Statement block, you can select these options from the Options menu: Validate SQL Statement validates the select statement. Show Graph Results previews your graph and displays the actual data returned by your select statement. Create Filter displays the Graph Filtering window where you can make specified data fields available for filtering. Graph Filtering Window Use this window to make specified data fields available for filtering. To access this window, select Create Filter from the Options menu in the main window. The name of each table in your select statement from clauses appears in the Tables block. When you select a table, the Column Name block shows the columns in the selected table. You can drag and drop a column name from this area to a Column Name field. The associated Data Type appears automatically. Enter a user-friendly name for the filter in the Description field. The wizard uses this name to identify the data you want to filter. Select Show Saved Filter Files from the Options menu to display a list of the data set s graphs saved with filters.
