Delmelle Office: McEniry 419 Phone: Office Hours: Wednesday 10:00-11:00; Thursday 1:30 2:30; Or by appointment Teaching Assistant: Chenjun Ling Office: McEniry 427 Office Hours: Tuesday 2:30-4:40pm Course Overview: The first half of this course, prior to the midterm will be dedicated to database design (with an emphasis on relational databases), relational database theory, and structured query language (SQL). The second part of the course will transition into spatial and geodatabases including spatial queries, geodatabase design, and geographic data models.. My learning objectives for you in this course are: To gain an understanding of database theory (emphasis on relational & some object-oriented databases) Develop the skills to design an effective database Develop the skills to implement your database design Gain some proficiency in the writing of SQL queries Become proficient in geodatabase design Course Materials: Textbooks: Stephens, R., Beginning Database Design Solutions Stephens, R., Plew, R., Jones, A. Sams Teach Yourself SQL in 24 Hours. Software: We will use a variety of software in this course. There are a number of database options for learning to write queries, and this knowledge can easily be applied to whatever database you find yourself working with in the future (Oracle, PostGRE, SQLServer, etc.) For this course, we will use MS Access & MySQL (Free!). For classes using this software, you will have to bring your own laptop with the software installed (works on Macs) we can discuss further as we get closer to this topic..

2 Course Requirements: Labs: A series of lab exercises will be assigned throughout the semester. All data for the labs will be either available on the course drive (S:\COAS\geog\LABS\Geog4150) or on Moodle and all lab instructions will be downloadable from the course website on Moodle. Most labs will be due one week following their assigned data unless otherwise indicated (the due date will always be marked on the instructions). Late assignments will be penalized as follows: Up to 1 day late (24h): -25% 1 2 days late: -50% More than 2 days late: No Longer Accepted Final Project: Each student will complete a final project that will consist of a design of a spatial database more details will be provided later in the semester. Graduate Students: Graduate students will be assigned several additional readings and will provide a 1-2 page summary of each topic according to the schedule below. Grading System: The grading system is summarized in the following table.
