1 POLICE STAFF JOB DESCRIPTION SECTION 1 JOB TITLE: Production Database Administrator (2 Posts) REPORTS TO: Production DBA Lead REF NO R121/18 DIVISION/DEPARTMENT Corporate Services/ICT WORK LOCATION: Flexible GRADE Band G SECTION 2 JOB PURPOSE: To design, develop, administer, programme, support and maintain enterprise database systems and services, in accordance with agree standards and to assist in providing a strategic coordination of these technologies within the general ICT environment across Police Scotland and the SPA. SECTION 3 ACCOUNTABILITIES AND MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Provide technical expertise in respect of the design, build/programming, test, deployment, management and documentation of new & existing database systems. 2. Where required, undertake a lead role on relevant projects and initiatives, including creation/maintenance of project plans. Provide relevant technical advice/guidance to other members of the team and to customers within the Scottish Police Service and wider Criminal Justice community. 3. Operate proactively within an environment of closely managed projects providing regular task updates and supporting project management processes.

2 4. Provide database systems support, ensuring that relevant databases are fully functional, are meeting the business requirement and that all associated Service Level Agreements are being met. 5. Ensure the integrity and security of database systems, including those hosted on restricted networks. 6. Ensures optimization and performance of databases through appropriate tuning of services. 7. Plan and execute logical database design and physical data design tasks that conform to the logical design. 8. Undertake analysis and documentation of business requirements in order to produce functional specifications and other dependent technical documentation. 9. Analyse requests for change to database systems, in order to assess nature and extent of change and estimate development timescales. 10. Develop and direct implementation of backup and recovery procedures for database systems. 11. Undertake deployment and configuration of local and national database solutions to live environment. 12. Maintaining data standards, including adherence to the Data Protection Act. 13. Provide a breadth of technical knowledge that covers the specialisms of the Production DBA team s function, providing technical advice, guidance and mentoring to other team members, as required. 14. Support database applications & tools through their lifecycle of testing, deployment, operation, user training, maintenance, and enhancement. 15. Assist in advising management in respect of the data systems development strategy, including input on database management tools, design and product standards. 16. Keep abreast of data protection, freedom of information and local/national security policies and ensure that such policies are adhered to. 17. May be required to participate in an on-call rota. 18. Provide mentoring / support to Modern Apprentices and Student Placements with the Applications and Development unit, supporting database administration activities to help them to expand their skills and experience within the organisation.

3 19. Assist with the development of a research work programme arising from the Innovation Hub. 20. Assist with elements of the work programme implementations arising from the ICT Strategy, BluePrint, Corporate Strategy and Futures Portfolio, in particular the remit of the Innovation Hub Research Committee. 21. Support and assist the work within the Innovation Hub for research and development in their area of skills and expertise. 22. Will be responsible for assessing and self-managing risk within all aspects of the role. The above accountabilities and responsibilities are not exhaustive, and the Jobholder may be required to undertake additional duties that are consistent with the level and grading of the role. SECTION 4 LOCATION: Flexible BAND: G ATTRIBUTES ESSENTIAL DESIRABLE ATTAINMENTS EDUCATIONAL / OCCUPATIONAL Degree in related computer science or software engineering discipline. OR Where no formal qualifications exist, relevant experience in a similar environment. Qualification in an enterprise database technology (Oracle or SQL Server). PERSONAL QUALITIES Excellent interpersonal, communication, analytical and problem solving skills. Strong prioritisation and organisational skills, customer focussed. Ability to work on own initiative with limited supervision and deal with a varied programme of work. Ability to work under pressure

4 as part of a team. Capable of communicating effectively with both a Technical and non-technical audiences. SPECIAL APTITUDES relational database system management principles and practices. Knowledge and experience of Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence concepts and best practices. Experience administering application servers. database design (logical & physical) and implementation. Knowledge and experience in development and administration of relational database management systems, including a good working knowledge of SQL. database backup and recovery technology and associated processes. supported versions of Microsoft SQL server or Oracle RDBMS. Experience working with customers to elicit and define requirement specifications. Proven experience in a technical role related to enterprise database architecture, design, management and the delivery of enterprise data services. Experience writing database documentation, including data standards, procedures and definitions for the data dictionary (metadata). Knowledge of data protection legislation, information security protocols and data weeding practices. A sound understanding of how existing and developing government legislation affects the storage, use and transfer of data in ICT systems. Experience of architecting, designing, developing, and testing ETL solutions. Experienced in working with disparate data systems which are spread across a multi-site physical and operational environment. CIRCUMSTANCES A DRIVING LICENCE IS: Not required
