5 1 Executive Summary In December 2009, The Eurpean Cmmissin/DG Envirnment (currently Climate Actin DG) awarded EMISIA SA with the update f the Graphical User Interface f the TREMOVE mdel. TREMOVE is a plicy assessment mdel t study the effects f different transprt and envirnment plicies n the emissins f the transprt sectr. The mdel simulates plicies such as rad pricing, public transprt pricing, emissin standards, subsidies fr cleaner cars etc, the transprt demand, mdal shifts, vehicle stck renewal and scrappage decisins as well as the emissins f air pllutants and the welfare level. The mdel hwever cannt be used by anyne nt familiar with sftware prgramming. Fr this reasn a Graphical User Interface was designed. The previus versin f the mdel was TREMOVE GUI v1 which included the TREMOVE mdel v.3.1. This prject deals with the update f this Interface. The main bjectives f the prject were: t update the versin f the TREMOVE mdel currently used in the GUI with the latest versin f the mdel t assess the functinalities f the GUI, update them where necessary and/r add new functinalities t rganize a training sessin fr the new versin f the GUI. 2 Wrk Perfrmed The fllwing sectins present the wrk perfrmed t meet the requirements f the cntract. The reprt fllws in many ways the structure f the specificatins f the prject. Task 100: Update the existing GUI fr TREMOVE Subtask 110: Assessment f the existing functinalities Emisia tgether with the Eurpean Cmmissin during the kick-ff meeting decided t keep all features currently existing in TREMOVE GUI with the exceptin f ne feature. The user n lnger has access t the Demand Mdule and Demand Database. The Demand Mdule is a key feature f the mdel, and is very sensitive t changes intrduced by the user. It is als imprtant t recalibrate the mdel each time the Demand Mdule is changed. This prved t be ut f the scpe f this prject. Subtask 120: Assessment f the new functinalities Emisia, with guidance frm the Eurpean Cmmissin, prepared a list f additinal features and imprvements t be included in the GUI update. These were discussed and it was decided t include them in the new versin. The additinal features are listed in the fllwing paragraphs. In additin, JRC/IPTS suggested an update n the saving prcess f the GUI, namely t split the save file in tw separate parts. One part will include the baseline 5

6 mdificatins and a secnd part will include the scenari files. This reduces the file size f the infrmatin that needs t be saved each time, and als facilitates the exchange f scenaris between the different users. It was als suggested that the GUI shuld be able t pen scenari files created by advanced users, withut the use f the sftware. Finally, the pssibility t use different versins f the TREMOVE cde was discussed. All the abve suggestins were taken int cnsideratin and were implemented in the updated versin f the GUI. All mdificatins are listed in detail in the fllwing paragraphs. Subtask 130: Update f the GUI Imprvement f peratinal experience fr end-users Smther running prcedure The new mdel GUI (v2.5) has successfully eliminated a number f errrs that previusly ccurred during the database prcessing stage with Micrsft Access in GUI v1.0. The GUI nw apprpriately handles changes made by users s that they are passed t the mdel in the apprpriate frmat and within the valid dmain f the mdel prcess. Careful selectin f scenari insert pints and crrect generatin f scenari files als ensures the success f scenari runs. Significant imprvements t prcessing times The previus versin (v1.0) required minutes t save changes made t a GUI input database and scenari, whereas the new mdel requires nly 1 minute. This represents majr and significant prgress and affrds the user greater flexibility in wrking with the mdel and develping new scenaris. The new mechanism t imprt new data int the mdel and targeted updating/imprting f the database cntributes t this time-saving imprvement. Effrts t make the mdel cmpatible with mre perating systems Besides Windws XP 32/64, the new mdel can be run in Vista 32/64 and Windws 7 32/64. Alternative baseline use A distinctin is made between the baseline mdificatins and the scenari creatin. Fr this reasn the user is prmpted t select nt nly a scenari file t pen, but als the baseline assciated with this scenari. This allws the user t create an alternative baseline and use this baseline fr the executin f multiple scenaris. The size f the saved files is significantly reduced. Imprvements t accessibility and user-friendliness Inheriting the cding flexibility frm TREMOVE cmmand line The new GUI v2.5 includes functins that help the user t find the GAMS files and pivt tables frm TREMOVE 3.3.1/3.1. This extends the functin cverage ver the cmmand line versin (TREMOVE 3.3.1, TREMOVE 3.1). Therefre, users wh are willing t cnduct mre cmplicated

7 calibratin at the cding level nw can cmbine the GUI versin with the cmmand line versin. GUI interface t view the final results The new result viewing functins prvide graphical interfaces fr the end-users t manipulate r query the final results. Filters can be added easily by clicks-n-windws t explre the result database under criteria such as cuntries, vehicle types, technlgies, years, transprt mdes. The results f activity, vehicle stck, emissin, scial welfare are nw clearly divided int rad, rail, air and water transprt. Taxatin and technlgy wizards Taxatin and technlgy wizards have been implemented t assist the user in creating and running scenaris. These wizards are a useful supprt fr new users. Direct change methds are als prvided fr mre advanced users wh wish t make very specific mdificatins. New data exprted file frmats New data exprted file frmats, such as Excel files, text files, html files, have been added t enable users t view r analyse the TREMOVE data files in their preferred applicatin envirnment. Cnsideratin f the cntinuatin f mdelling wrks Save/lad prject, save/lad database and lad scenari allw users t cntinue their previus wrks r reuse their previus intermediate data. Cmpatibility with TREMOVE 3.1 and TREMOVE The GUI v2.5 can be run n the basis f TREMOVE 3.1 r TREMOVE These tw ptins f cmmand line mdels help the users t run the new GUI v2.5 based n the cmmand line versin f TREMOVE they wish. This is imprtant fr users wh may have previusly mdified a versin f TREMOVE t their needs. Pivt table view Where necessary, the user will be able t create pivt tables in the frms fr a better verview f the data presented in the GUI. Saved file frmat The user is given the ptin t save all related files in ne single file. A secnd ptin is given t cmpress this file in rder t reduce the size r even lck the file with a passwrd. This hwever requires an increase in the time needed t save and pen the file. MS Excel data exchange A new prgramming has been used t cmmunicate data t and frm MS Excel frm the frms. This further decreases the time f this prcedure. The functinality is included in all related frms. 7

8 Subtask 140: Updated user manual fr the new GUI The user's manual f the applicatin was updated with the additinal features and prvides instructins n hw t use the GUI. It describes the peratin f the interface and prvides infrmatin n hw t define and perfrm scenari runs. The user manual can be dwnladed frm the fllwing address: A help file has als been added t the sftware. The help file is in chm frmat and can be accessed via the menu bar. Additinally, every frm prvides the user with the pssibility t pen the help file t the crrespnding tpic related t the specific frm. Subtask 150: Debugging f the sftware A separate team (AP EnvEcn) was respnsible fr the debugging f the sftware. AP EnvEcn tested all menu ptins and majr peratinal aspects f the intermediate versins f the GUI. On the basis f the varius cmments received, several bugs and errrs were crrected and the final versin was frmulated. T facilitate cmmunicatin between relevant Emisia and AP EnvEcn staff, a frum fr questins and answers n the GUI peratin was created. Access t the frum was prvided nly t the develpers and evaluatrs f the mdel during the prject perid. The main functin f the frum was t help the exchange f infrmatin between the debugging and the develping team as well as keep a recrd f all tests and imprvements. This frum prved t be a very valuable tl fr bth invlved teams. Subtask 160: Designing a website The new GUI v2.5 is made available fr dwnlad n a website designed and perated by Emisia. The site includes the main sftware files, links t all necessary infrmatin and dcumentatin, as well as sme example runs. The website can be fund in the fllwing address: Task 200: Training sessin Emisia will deliver a ne-day training curse in Brussels. The GUI will be installed t a desktp cmputer prvided by the Eurpean Cmmissin. The training curse will cver the installatin and use f the GUI and will include the executin f a number f real-wrld examples crrespnding t the main functinalities f the GUI, such as input values r datasets, scenari management, etc. The respnsible fr the training curses team members will als prepare presentatins in MS PwerPint frmat that will be presented t the attendees. These presentatins will include all the key issues that will be cvered during the curses.
