1 Intrductin t Office 2010: What s New, Imprved, and Missing This dcument prvides a general verview f the mst imprtant features and utilities in Office Als prvided are highlights f new features in Wrd, Outlk, Excel, and PwerPint. Opening Assurances 1. Functinality is the same; the interface is quite similar t Office Files made in previus versins f Office can be pened in Office Files created in Office 2010 can be saved in previus versins. a. Files created in Office 2010 have the same file extensins as thse created in Office b. Yu can dwnlad a free Cmpatibility Pack t pen Office 2007/2010 files in previus versins f Office. Benefits f Office Office 2010 ffers a set f slid imprvements t increase prductivity and imprve the lk and functinality f yur files. 2. The Ribbn is nw cnsistent acrss all applicatins and can be custmized. 3. The File menu is back! Missing in Office 2007, Micrsft has brught the File menu back and it is nw better than ever. 4. Prject and Visi are nw available free f charge t faculty/staff. a. Prject is a tl fr planning, rganizing, and tracking the prgress f prjects in a very detailed manner. b. Visi is used fr flwcharts, diagrams, and rganizatinal and ther charts. Hw t Get Office 2010 Office 2010 is available free f charge t current faculty, staff, and graduate assistants. Fr campus cmputers, the installatin package is available n the UIS WebStre ( Fr hme cmputers, the installatin media is available directly frm Micrsft. Yu will nly have t pay fr the csts f shipping and handling. (ITS cannt prvide the installatin media fr hme use installatins.) Obtaining Micrsft Office 2010 Installatin Media: Yu are eligible t participate in Micrsft's Sftware Assurance Hme Use Prgram (HUP). This prgram enables yu t get a licensed cpy f mst Micrsft Office desktp PC applicatins t install and use n yur hme cmputer. Infrmatin Technlgy Services, UIS 1

2 Under the Hme Use Prgram, yu and ur ther emplyees wh are users f qualifying applicatins at wrk (e.g. Office Enterprise) may acquire a licensed cpy f the crrespnding Hme Use Prgram sftware (e.g. Office Enterprise) t install and use n a hme cmputer. Yu may cntinue using HUP sftware while yu are under ur emplyment and as lng as the crrespnding sftware yu use at wrk has active Sftware Assurance cverage. Please nte that sme prduct and language versins may nt be available at the time yu place an rder. Select the cuntry t which yu want yur rder t be shipped t and chse the language fr viewing the rder Web site. 3. Enter yur crprate address and insert the prgram cde (cntact the Technlgy Supprt Center fr this cde). Nte: This prgram cde is assigned t ur rganizatin fr ur sle use in accessing this site. Yu may nt share this number with anyne utside ur rganizatin. 4. Place yur rder nline, and it will be shipped t the lcatin yu have chsen. Highlights f Office 2010 All applicatins nw share the cmmn Ribbn interface, intrduced in Office The Ribbn can be custmized by creating persnalized tabs. T create a tab, chse Optins frm the File menu. 3 Select Custmize Ribbn frm the menu n the left. Click the New Tab buttn t create a tab. Click the New Grup buttn t create a grup, either n an existing tab r n a new tab. Select cmmands frm the list n the left t add t yur grup. Click the up and dwn buttns t rerder cmmands and the Rename buttn t edit the name f a cmmand/grup/tab. Use the Imprt/Exprt buttn t exprt yur custmizatins s that they may be imprted n anther cmputer. The Quick Access tlbar remains, serving as a cmmn space fr frequently used cmmands. Right-click any cmmand n the Ribbn t add it t the Quick Access tlbar. Use the drpdwn arrw t the right f the Quick Access tlbar t add cmmn cmmands. Infrmatin Technlgy Services, UIS 3

4 The File menu returns with imprved functinality, including BackStage View which prvides a centralized space fr file management tasks. The ability t save files in a PDF frmat is nw built-in. There is n lnger a need t dwnlad the add-in. The Print dialg bx has been enhanced, making it easier t perfrm cmmn printing and page setup tasks. 5 Applicatins nw bast a screen-clipping utility allwing users t easily capture screenshts f pen windws r specific sectins f a windw. Frm the Insert tab, chse Screensht. Chse t take a screensht f an pen windw r click-and-drag t select a prtin f the windw. T save the screensht, right-click and chse Save as Picture. 6 Pht editing tls have been enhanced, including sharpening, sftening, and eliminating backgrunds. The SmartArt feature, first intrduced in Office 2007, nw has additinal variants. Frm the Insert tab, chse SmartArt. Files can be upladed directly t SkyDrive, Micrsft s free nline strage service. By lgging in with a Live r Htmail accunt, users can stre up t 25GB f files. 7 Frm the File tab, chse Save & Send. Then select Save t Web. Once lgged int SkyDrive, select the apprpriate flder. Prtected View is intrduced. When files are pened fr the first time r thrugh attachments, they pen in Prtected View. Users click the Enable Editing buttn t revise the file. New in Wrd 2010 New features in Wrd 2010 include: Additinal special effects fr text, including bevel, glw, reflect, and shadw. On the Hme tab, click the Text Effects buttn t apply special effects t selected text. OpenType typgraphy, including Stylistic sets and ligatures. Ligatures are cmbinatins f letters written as a glyph as thugh a single character. On the Hme tab, in the Fnt grup, click the Fnt Dialg Bx Launcher buttn. Then click the Advanced tab. 8 An imprved Navigatin Pane, which allws users t brwse by headings. Additinally, the integrated Find tl instantly searches the dcument and highlights the results. 10 New in Outlk 2010 New features in Outlk 2010 include: The intrductin f Quick Steps, which allw users t create a sequence f cmmands t be executed via a single click. Quick Steps can be activated r created frm the Hme tab. Quick Steps are als accessible by right-clicking a message. The intrductin f Cnversatin View, which grups messages by thread. Cnnected lines shw which recipients are included in the threads. This view als makes it easy t delete entire cnversatins. T turn n Cnversatin View, frm the View tab, check Shw as Cnversatins. 11 As an alternative t Cnversatin View, users can right-click a message and chse Find Related Messages in This Cnversatin. The ability t turn an int a meeting. One feature that did NOT change is that Wrd remains the exclusive text editr. New in Excel 2010 New features in Excel 2010 include: Sparklines, which are small cell-sized charts. T create Sparklines, select the data range, and chse the type f sparklines frm the Insert tab. Slicers, which allw users t filter and segment PivtTable data in multiple layers. 12 T add a slicer, frm the Insert menu, chse Slicer. New in PwerPint 2010 New features in PwerPint 2010 include: The ability t embed vide clips directly frm the Internet. Frm the Insert tab, chse Vide, then Vide frm Website. Paste the embed cde. Nte: Vides frm websites require an Internet cnnectin they are nt being saved with the presentatin; they are merely played within the presentatin. A vide cnversin feature which cnverts presentatins int a vide that may be upladed t YuTube r distributed n a prtable media player (fr example, an ipd). Infrmatin Technlgy Services, UIS 12

13 Frm the File tab, chse Save & Send, then Create a Vide. The additin f pwerful vide editing features, including trimming, pster frames, bkmarks, clr adjustments, and ther special effects. 15 The ability t bradcast a presentatin live ver the Internet. Frm the File tab, chse Save & Send, then Bradcast Slideshw. Built-in laser pinter. Hld Ctrl and the left muse buttn t get a simulated laser pinter n yur slide in Slide Shw mde. Adjust the clr f the pinter in the Slide Shw tab. Other Ntes: Grve has been renamed SharePint Wrkspace. Creating new websites is n lnger available in Publisher Websites created in previus versins f Publisher can still be edited in Publisher Check the system requirements befre installing Office Prcessr and RAM requirements fr Office 2010 are the same as fr the 2007 Office system.
