alignment alignment Poorly Shaped Too Many Holes Centered alignment can be a quick and easy way to make text aesthetically pleasing but when used wrong it can turn against you. This text is centered creating an organic or vessel-like shape which is taking away from the text. Using justified text will make a clean shape and straight edged columns. The text is flushed to the right and left margins that it is in. When using justified type, settings of the line length and size of type have to be in relation to each other to avoid holes or gaps. In the example below because the text is justified, there are uneven gaps between each word which is distracting when reading it. 1 2
hierachy Too Many Signals Emphasizing can be done in many ways like using italics, boldface, small caps or color but only one change is need. Here the text is all caps, italicized, and underlined. Different dashes are used for different reasons. In this case a standard hyphen is used incorrectly between the time range. An en dash should have been used instead. Standard hyphens should be used to connect words where en dashes are used to connect numbers. dashes Hyphen & en dash 3 4
line spacing Leading Leading refers to the space between lines. There are default settings depending on the type size. The baseline shift tool can change the separation between lines either reducing or increasing the distance. To avoid collision between ascender and descenders like the example below, the leading should be adjusted. The baseline shift tool should be used especially when mixing different sizes or styles of type. Kerning is the space between two letters. Kerning can help to make the space between the group of letters to be more consistent and appear to have equal space between the letters. There are two settings to kerning which are metrics and optical or you can manually do it by holding the option key while pressing the right or left key. In this example the space between the T, r, and o are much closer than the space between the rest of the letters. Kerning Adjustment of Space 5 6
tracking Loose Tracking Tracking refers to the space between each letter in a group which is usually uniform. The tracking between each letter on the street sign is too loose which makes the sign look awkward and airy. It looks like this was done just to fill up space of the sign. Playing with the scale of letterforms will create more visual hierarchy, contrast, and depth. When there is little difference between letterforms the design is less dynamic and interesting. scale Minimal Difference 7 8
thumbnails A widow is where there is one word at the end of a paragraph or column. It interprets the reader s eye and is distracting. It also leaves a lot of white space at the end and between paragraphs. This could have been fixed with just a few adjustments. widow At the End 9 10
