1 Logging In: Getting into is fast and easy You can request access to by ing Prof. J. Nathan Kutz Universities and colleges are offered 1-quarter or 1-semester free trial periods in which to evaluate. You should automatically receive an from with your randomly generated password. In the case you lose your password or failed to have one sent to you, you can simply use the I forgot my password button on to instantaneously generate a new one. In case there is a problem, you should verify that the address uploaded is correct. Forgot your password? No problem! will automatically generate a new one upon request. The new password will be a randomly generated 8 character string that will be automatically ed to your account.

2 Instructor Main Page Managing scorelator is fast and easy Assignment Configuration: This is the primary action of as it allows you to upload your homework. The homework becomes active immediately upon submission. Homeworks can also be just as easily removed. Assignment Details: This allows you to look at the feedback generated by for your homework submissions. The results are automatically ed to you. Class Scores: This gives a current summary of the homework scores. You are also allowed to overide a score, erase a student submission, or save the scores to an Excel spreadsheet. Class Statistics: This gives a comprehensive and current breakdown of the class averages per attempt for any given homework. Class List: You can easily manage a class list by adding students or removing students. Class Admin: Manage the class administration by adding/removing teaching assistants. Administrators can perform the above functions. Forgot your password? No problem! Scorelator will automatically generate a new one upon request. The new password will be a randomly generated 8 character string that will be automatically ed to your account.

3 Managing Students Uploading Your Classlist For large classes, it is expected that you should receive some electronic form of classlist from your University or College. Once obtained, you can use a standard spreadsheet like Excel to save your student list as a comma delimited file with FIRST NAME, LAST NAME, and . This can then be uploaded to. 1. Submit New Classlist: Choose the browse button to identify a comma delimited file which includes FIRST NAME, LAST NAME, . Once selected, simply press the submit button. 2. Add Student: This allows you to manually load in your students and their associated address. The address will be their login name. 3. Remove Student: For students who drop the class, you can easily remove them by highlighting their name in the class students dialogue box and then pressing the remove button. Be a student too! If you would like to test a submission, simply add yourself to the classlist! Upon logging in to Scorelator, you will be given the option of coming into Scorelator as the instructor or student.

4 Class Administration Adding course administrators and TAs You can add teaching assistants or class administrators in the same way as adding students. Note that the administrator has the same priviledges as the instructor. A nice feature of this is that it allows the teaching assistant or second class administrator to download the grades from the class scores directly to an Excel file for processing: Add Admin: You can add an administrator by inputing their first name, last name and address. An will be automatically be sent to them giving them their randomly generated password. Remove Admin: To remove an administrator, simply highlight the specific administrator in the class admin dialogue box and press the remove administrator button. TA Help? No problem! allows you to add your TAs to the class administrator list so that they can also run the homework submission process and data accumulation.

5 Assignment Upload 1. The Details You can set the maximum score and choose the category of new assignments. 2. Anti-Cheating Set the cheating level so that any codes correlated above this percentage generates a warning to the instructor. 3. Tolerance Set the error tolerance level expected from the student submissions. 4. Due Date The Add due date button controls the number of attempts and the specific times a homework is due. 5. Upload Files Use the browse button followed by the upload button to upload all necessary files. Highlight the primary file to run and choose the math kernel to run. Helpful Hints Be sure your answers are correct before uploading your files. Many problems are created if your answer key is incorrect. Check your assignment configuration details in terms of the number of files you expect generated. It is imperative that you are explicit with your students about what is expecting. All answers should be saved as ASCII. Choose a due date in the middle of the night so as to avoid a backlog of simultaneous submissions in the window of time just before the assignment is due. 6. Excecute Once all files are uploaded, press the create new assignment button. You will receive an with a summary of the generated files.

6 Assignment Details instructor feedback reports back to the instructor via both and on the assignment details link the details of your submission process. You should check these carefully to be sure that the number of files generated matches your expectation for a given assignment. Some helpful tips: Be sure all the files expected are accounted for by the feedback. The is explicit about all the files that are generated before MATLAB is closed. The name of the primary file to execute is displayed. Be sure it matches your expectations so that there is no confusion about what code was executed. Something wrong? It often happens that when the number of files generated does not match your expectations, MATLAB has failed to execute your code properly due to a forgotten MATLAB file used for a function call. Be sure to upload all files necessary for submission.

7 Class Scores Tracking student progress You can track each student s attempts and their current score from the class scores link. In the Scores box, the current scores are given for each attempt. The Final box keeps track of their highest submission score. You can backup the data as a CSV file which can be opened by most standard spreadsheet editors such as Excel. The edit scores allows you some flexibility in manually taking care of problems due to submission errors or some other unanticipated problem. Overwrite privilege The edit scores dialogue box allows you to manually remove or add a score. Thus a submitting opportunity can be given back, and a manual grade given.

8 Homework Statistics Homework statistics You can very easily track how students are doing for any given homework by following the class statistics link. The following things are tracked: The progress by the class for each attempt. Typically, the mean score will improve as the number of attempts increases. The number of submissions for each attempt. This number should decrease as more students are successful in their submissions. The mean, high and low. For each attempt, the current mean score, highest score and lowest score are given. In the example above, by the 4th attempt, all submissions scored a minimum of four points. Evaluating the difficulty level of homeworks By tracking the scores per submission, a more concrete understanding of the difficulties the students are experiencing can be determined.
