1 Basic: Communities, Week 3 Post Office, Bills and Junk Mail Unit objective: Students will be able navigate the post office, address and write a letter, interpret a simple bill and write a check. Monday Lesson Objectives: Materials Review last week s objectives as appropriate Identify functions of things at the post office (stamps, envelope, money order, mailbox, package, weight, address) Practice a simple dialogue at the post office Post office pictures (see below) Talk of the Block, Junk Mail, page Activity Ideas: Flash card creation: Talk about the pictures on the ELMO. Pass out copies of the pictures and have Ss label them and cut them out. Fast finishers can write a short sentence about each picture (I buy a stamp). Quiz: T calls out name, Ss hold up picture. If extra time, a high-level student can do the calling. Encourage students to bring their flashcards everyday and to practice at home. Post office dialogue: Together create a dialogue for an interaction at the post office. Practice as a class, T/Ss, half class, half class and in pairs. Volunteer pairs can perform in front of the class. Example: A: Hello. Can I mail this package? B: Yes. When do you want it to get there? A: Next week is okay. B: $6.75 please. A: Here you go. Thank you. B: Have a nice day.

4 Tuesday Lesson Objectives: Materials Review Monday s objectives as appropriate Address an envelope/write a letter Envelopes (see coordinator) Survival English 1, pg 249 Activity Ideas: Envelope writing: T draws a fake envelope on the board and talks about the various parts (to/from addresses, stamp). T writes the envelope to someone and shows how to put return address info. After practicing, Ss should practice addressing envelope to the school (MLC Lake Street, 2700 East Lake St, Mpls, MN 55406). Next, split Ss in pairs. Have them ask each other their address, and write it in the to part of the envelope. Ss should write their partner a letter and seal it in the envelope with their return address. Then, they can deliver it to their partner to read. If time remains, Ss can write another letter to their teacher or someone else. Survival English worksheet
5 Wednesday Lesson Objectives: Materials Review Monday and Tuesday s objectives Interpret simple bills Write a check for a bill Bills Survival English 1 pg 254 & 256. Checks (see below) Activity Ideas: Bill Analysis: Make a list of what bills they have. Discuss how they pay their bills. Discuss how they get their bills. What happens if you don t pay a bill? How often do you pay bills? Can you send cash in the mail for a bill? What if you can t pay? Bills have A LOT of writing, but help them to scan for these key words: due date, amount due. Examine bills on the ELMO together identifying these pieces using the SE worksheets. Ss can complete the worksheets after class goes over them initially together. Check writing Ask Ss if they write checks. Draw a sample check on the board and fill it in together. Once Ss are familiar with the fields, pass out a check to each student. Decide on a bill from earlier for them to write a check for. Ss write a check for the bill. Fast finishers can write bills for other checks (make extra copies). Note: You will probably have to spell out the numbers. Dictation: stamp, mailbox, check I m going to the post office.

7 Thursday Lesson Objectives: Materials Review week s objectives. Write a check for a bill Checks (see Wednesday) Bill slips (see below) Activity Ideas: Check writing: Ask Ss if they remember writing checks yesterday. Draw a sample check on the board and fill it in together. Once Ss are familiar with the fields, pass out a check to each student. T makes a copy of the bill slips and puts them in a basket. Ss draw a slip from the basket and write a check for that bill. Fast finishers can write bills for other checks (make extra copies of checks). Note: You will probably have to spell out the numbers.
