3 What is calibration training? Calibration training through CANVAS will provide evaluators with an opportunity to watch video clips that have been master-coded by professionals trained in the use of M-STAR and in providing strong evidence for ratings assigned each standard. Calibration training will be delivered through Canvas, an online learning management system.

4 Purpose of calibration This is for practice and training purposes only This is not a graded course Data collected from quizzes is for research purposes only and is not being used for evaluation The goal is so that all evaluators have the same standard expectations for each rating

5 What is master-coding? Master coding is the process by which instructional videos are scored and supported with corresponding evidence that is consistent with the state s interpretation of its observations instrument. Master coding supports consistent application of a rubric. The process involves individual scoring of raw videos of classroom instruction followed by discussion to reach consensus on the ratings and the evidence. The main goal of master coding is to support consistent application of the M-STAR rubric.

7 Getting Started: MDE Canvas If you are already a CANVAS user, then you will login as usual and accept the course invitation to M-STAR Rubric Rating Practice I. If you are new to Canvas, send an to helpdesk@rcu.msstate.edu requesting an account and access to the calibration training. Include your educator license number, your full name, district, and account. Once added, you will receive and with the course invitation. Accepting the invitation will take you to the Canvas course where you will log in with your educator license number as your user ID. The first time you attempt to login, you will select forgot password so that you will get an to set your password.

8 How to Log into Canvas Helpful Hints for Logging Into Canvas: Correct URL is NOT canvas.instructure.com NOT www Firefox, Chrome, or Safari preferable (Internet Explorer 9 or 10 should also work) If you cannot remember your username or password, click Don t know your password? You will receive an with your username at the top and a link to reset your password. If an doesn t arrive within an hour, contact helpdesk@rcu.msstate.edu. 8

9 How to Log into Canvas Helpful Hints for Logging In, Cont.: Your username is typically your licensure number, not your address. The software and browser you are using may cause the login screen to look slightly different, but remember to enter your licensure number instead of your address. 9

12 Getting started: Teaching and Learning Laboratory 1. Login to MDE Canvas 2. Click on Courses at the top of the page. 3. Click on the M-STAR Rubric Rating Practice I course. 4. Read the front page of the course which will guide you through the process of: 1. Registering with the University of Michigan s Teaching and Learning Exploratory (TLE) site. This will be the resource for our videos Once you have registered (only done 1 time), login to TLE. 12

13 Using the course: After you register in the TLE website, complete these next steps in the M-STAR Rubric Rating Practice I Course: Click on modules (left side of screen) Select the module for the video you wish to view After viewing the video, take the quiz which is the M-STAR rubric standards 7 through 16 and submit. You will receive immediate feedback on your rating accompanied with evidence from the master coders detailing why a particular rating was assigned. You may also download the evidence in a word document for training purposes
