Helping Europe respond to the impact of climate change CLIPC portal: driven by climate4impact.eu services MARIS: Peter Thijsen, Jordan Maduro, Bert Broeren, KNMI: Maarten Plieger, Ernst de Vreede, Andrej Mhialowski, Wim Som de Cerf
1. IS-ENES and CLIPC
What is CLIPC? A project to develop a climate information platform: Aiming at: boundary workers, biophysical impact researchers, socioeconomic impact researchers and climate scientists Providing: Harmonised access to climate datasets derived from models, observations and re-analyses A climate impact toolkit to evaluate, rank and aggregate indicators Reuse existing concepts, components and services as much as possible but also innovate
Relation IS-ENES2 - CLIPC Climate Information Platform for Copernicus Climate data access through ESGF (WP5 STFC) Climate4impact.eu services used by CLIPC portal (WP4 KNMI) ICCLIM software for indices calculations (WP7 CERFACS) Climate data preparations and transformations (WP6 SMHI) Lots more familiar partners: STFC, SMHI, CERFACS, KNMI, WUR, CMCC,

2. New version of the CLIPC webportal
Approach for the new web portal Climate Information Platform for Copernicus Focus on services instead of project information Direct users to services for processing, accessing data, downloading and viewing climate data sets and impact indicators Providing user guidance to services, climate data and climate impact All integrated in one portal
Status of developments Current version: New Content Management System for updating website content New sitemap, new texts Components in development: Climate Impact Indicator Toolkit, including compare and combine function CLIPC dataset catalogue MyCLIPC data processing Climate data search Glossary integration in the portal as part of the knowledge base Planned updates for the portal: First release: Review of texts Selection of components to be released Release first version Upgrade during 2016 while components are mature and tested
Approach for the toolkit CLIPC discussions having Persona Jake Smart as a boundary worker in focus: What does he really need? The possibility to view set of indicators per theme: Thematic approach Function compare : compare indicators visually and via metadata. Function combine : Combine 2 indicators into a third via calculation/algorithm selection Switch between scenario All integrated in one user interface Climate Information Platform for Copernicus
Latest version of indicator toolkit
Status of developments Current: Toolbox version 1.0 developed Openlayers 3/Javascript/Php Climate Information Platform for Copernicus Making use of climate4impact Adaguc visualization server (Visualises NETCDF data from OpenDAP server) Basic functions, plus connections for extended modules Planned updates for the viewer (March 2016 and later): Add more indicators per theme Revise user interface, especially layer menu Add functions: Compare metadata Combine Catalogue connection Adjustments based of user feedback
Use of layer menu, viewing details per indicator
View time series of the indicator at a certain location
Select indicator for comparison Climate Information Platform for Copernicus
Compare indicators (map view metadata view added later)
Combine Indicators
Indicator combine tool: goal Climate Information Platform for Copernicus Selection Panel Selection Panel Selection Panel Exposure Sensitivity + = Impacts Information Panel Information Panel Information Panel
Extended combination interface
Methodological challenges Different spatial data types (e.g. vector vs. raster) Resolution and format of T2/T3 data Metadata for T2/T3 Different data units e.g. km 2 vs. C with different data ranges e.g. 5 > 2699 vs > 24.3 and different distributions normal distribution vs. with extreme outliers
Login and save bookmarks under account
View bookmarks
Concluding remarks: Climate Information Platform for Copernicus CLIPC portal is getting up to steam Many new functionality is available or test-ready T2 and T3 indicators are becoming available Next steps are improving metadata and display of uncertainty, search across different data infrastructures (ESGF, EMODnet, ngeo, MyOcean) Dealing with T2/T3 indicators data is challenging End user oriented: user consultation are in progress Many CLIPC services are provided by IS-ENES climate4impact: visualization WMS Indicator calculation (WPS, ICCLIM) Indicator metadata (CSW) Indicator data access (OpenDAP, WCS) Combine indicator (WPS/WCS) MyCLIPC processing basket Security and user management (OAUTH2 + access tokens) Secure access to ESGF data (using x509 certs)
