1 Connecting the ICT Standards with Grade 1 Literacy Idea What it Could Look Like How ICT Connects GRADE 1 Class Alphabet Book Each student illustrates a page for a specific letter in KidPix. Using SlideShow the work of the class is combined together and each student narrates their own slide with their voice. **How to make an Alphabet Book in KidPix** **How to make a SlideShow in KidPix** Curriculum Expectations: Language Overall Expectations Writing communicate ideas (thoughts, feeling, experiences) for specific purpose (e.g., write a letter to a friend describing a new pet) use some materials from other media (e.g., computer clip-art) to enhance their writing begin to revise written work, with the assistance of the teacher Reading read a variety of simple written materials (e.g., signs, pattern books, rhymes, children s reference books) for different proposes (e.g., for practice, information, vocabulary building, enjoyment) Oral and Visual Communication communicate messages, and follow basic instructions and directions ICT STUDENT STANDARDS Communication and Collaboration with assistance, communicate ideas and information using pictures and text (e.g., publish a narrative using KidPix SlideShow) Productivity and Applications begin to edit text and images within a document (e.g., modify colour of font, add clip art, erase images)

2 Idea What it Could Look Like How ICT Connects GRADE 1 Electronic Diagrams Using the drawing tools, students can draw the computer (or anything they are learning about!) and then label the different parts. Their diagrams can be printed and posted for the reference of other students. **More KidPix Ideas for Grade 1** Curriculum Expectations: Language Overall Expectations Writing organize information so that the writing conveys a clear message produce short pieces of writing using simple forms (stories, descriptions, lists of info) Reading use some conventions of written materials (e.g.; punctuation, title) to help them understand what they read Oral and Visual Communication communicate messages, and follow basic instructions and directions create some simple media works ICT STUDENT STANDARDS Communication and Collaboration create a diagram using drawing tools to depict a personally significant place (e.g., classroom, park, bedroom) Productivity and Applications accomplish curriculum-based tasks by using tool software (e.g., create a pictograph in KidPix)

3 Alphabet Stamps in KidPix (1) Open KidPix Click on the A in the KidPix Menu Bar

4 (2) At the Bottom of the Screen the KidPix Letters will appear Click on the Down Arrow and you will see the rest of the alphabet Hint: Click on the UP Arrow to get back to the first set of letters (3) Click on the Letter you want to start with (example A) You will hear the computer say the letter Drag the Letter A on to your page and click the mouse to stamp it Now do the same with the other Letters (B, C, D, E, F, etc...) (4) Select the Stamper Tool from the KidPix menu Choose a picture that begins with the letter A from the Stamp Menu, Drag it on to your page and click the mouse to Stamp it. Try to find stamps for each letter! You can click on the Arrows to see more Stamps!

5 (5) You can also choose a different set of stamps from under the Goodies Menu You ll see this screen Choose the Stamp Set you d like by Clicking on it Then Click OK to get your new Stamps

6 (6) Stamp a number of pictures to match each Letter..it could look like this! (7) To Save your Picture, select Save a Picture from under the File menu You will see a screen that looks like this Type your Name in the box (example JimA for your first picture) Then Click the Save button (Your Teacher may have special instructions for where to save your file)

7 Using the Alphabet in KidPix: Some Ideas Alphabet matching: use the stamp, select a letter, and find pictures in the stamp that begin with the letter Make an alphabet book. If they can t find a stamp use pencil tool to draw an item Students click on an alphabet letter and stamp respond orally for letter recognition Using a Stationary File, the teacher begins the first few letters of the alphabet and the students then complete the pattern Student writes their name and finds stamps to match each letter Teacher creates Stationary File for singular word and student writes the plural with the letter tools Draw a picture and write a sentence describing the picture...add punctuation using the typewriting tool Teacher asks students to find stamps with consonant blends ex: tr train, truck, tree Teacher creates a template with a sentence pattern ex: I saw the...student fills in the blank with stamp/drawing/writing Using stamps students apply "es" to form the plural of specific words ex: watch(es) Students retell a scene from a story in a picture below the picture they use adjectives to describe the scene Students create a "spelling list" of KidPix stamps (ex. same sounds, opposites etc..)

8 Kid Pix SlideShow 1. Open Kid Pix and make a title page with text and a picture. 2. Go to Goodies and Record a Sound to make a recording of the text. Goodies Select Record, record the text, play back and rerecord as you like. Save. 3. Save as Title or whatever is appropriate. The sound will be saved with it. 4. Go to File and New and make the picture and text of page 1 of the show. Go to Goodies and Record a Sound. Record and save as Page 1 or whatever is appropriate. 5. Continue in this way making pages, recording sounds and saving until the necessary pages are complete. SlideShow allows you to put in up to 99 pages. (A KidPix SlideShow can consist of KidPix pictures, photo CD pictures, digital movies and photos or a mixture of all of these) (Create a folder for the SlideShow and Remember to put all pictures in the TDSB - Academic Services Information Technology - Spring 2001

9 this folder) 6. Go to Toolbox and Switch to SlideShow. Toolbox You will see 12 boxes each with a truck inside. 7. Click on the first box on the T.V. set. Select the first picture, Title and it will appear in the rectangle. The T.V. screen below will then have a blue rectangle to show it is completed. 10 8. The middle box with the musical note on it will already be coloured blue because the recording was done in Kid Pix. It can be redone by clicking on the box, selecting the microphone, recording again and then saving. In Slide show you can select one of 16 sounds or make your own recording. You can preview the sounds by clicking the preview button. 9. Click on the third box which has a diagonal zigzag line and an arrow. The slideshow will automatically use a Cut transition unless, a fancier transition is chosen If a digital movie is placed in the moving van, sound cannot be added This will bring you to a screen where you can choose a transition style between pictures. 11 9. Repeat steps 6, 7, 8 and 9 for each page. You can redo any page, recording or transition at any time by clicking on the appropriate box. 10. Time Slider The time Slider allows you to control the amount of time for each slide a slide can play from 0 to 30 seconds adjusting the slider, changes the length of time if using a digital movie, click on the slider to set the various movie options (length of time, looping, display size) 11. SlideShow Controls: Undo Guy (erases last thing) Firecracker Play (once) Play (continuously) (erases slide) (double click to stop loop) TDSB - Academic Services Information Technology - Spring 2001

12 12. In the Goodies pull down menu choose Play once. Watch your slide show and make any adjustments. 13. Save the slideshow as a SlideShow. You can also save it as a QuickTime movie. As a QuickTime movie you can play it on the Wacky TV in KidPix. Choose Pick a Movie. Select the QuickTime movie you saved and then play. TDSB - Academic Services Information Technology - Spring 2001

13 Once saved as a QuickTime move, your Slideshow can then be inserted into ClarisWorks, HyperStudio and sent over the internet. TDSB - Academic Services Information Technology - Spring 2001

14 Counting Stamps in KidPix (1) Open KidPix Click on the A in the KidPix Menu Bar

17 Counting in KidPix: Some Ideas Teacher makes a Stationary Files ex: 1 pig, 2 pigs...student goes in use the number stamp and matches the number to corresponding objects Teacher creates a calendar template with the days of the week and the student types in the days and indicates what they do on each day Extension of above activity: students describe what they do morning, afternoon, evening of each day Skip counting using the numbers ex: 2, 4, 6, Number, picture, word sentences ex: Five + seven = twelve, five pigs + seven pigs = 12 pigs Create a simple picto-graph ex: lost teeth by month of the year Students create 1-20 # s in pictures and words (ex. 1 one) Students demonstrate multiplication /division groupings (ex. 12 carrot sticks divided amongst 4 friends) Students construct a clock and record the time in digital and analog
