Getting started Once Map of Medicine Sidebar has been installed on your PC, it starts automatically whenever you start your clinical system. Alternatively, you can start Map Sidebar on its own by double-clicking on the icon on your desktop. The Sidebar is displayed at the right side of your screen to ensure you have plenty of space to see EMIS and any other relevant applications. Have you been installed correctly? To check that you have been, look at the bottom of the Sidebar and check that EMIS Web is displayed there. Also check that you have the Directory button displayed. See the Map Sidebar Configuration Guide for details. If you need more screen space If Sidebar is taking up too much screen space at any point, you can reduce its size by clicking on the reduce icon in the top ribbon. You can reduce the Sidebar to an icon by clicking on the icon in the corner of the top ribbon. Use your Windows toolbar or Alt + Tab when you need to view Sidebar again. Closing Sidebar Sidebar closes automatically when you close EMIS. Do not close Sidebar at any time. If you are using Sidebar without being integrated with EMIS (or any other clinical system), you can close Sidebar in the standard Windows way by clicking on the x in the top right corner. By default, Map Sidebar is displayed on the right side of your screen, but you can click on the top ribbon and drag it to another location, if necessary. Your own professional details are displayed here. Patient details are displayed here when you start a consultation in EMIS. Click on the arrow to make this area smaller. Conditions you add to the consultation or which are already in the patient record are displayed here automatically giving you links to the relevant care maps and referral forms. Check whether your Sidebar has been integrated with a clinical system or whether it has been installed to stand alone. Click here to reduce the size of the Sidebar You can also search for a condition to view the results in the areas below. Note that the direction of the arrow changes when the Sidebar is reduced, indicating that you can click to make it larger again. View a directory of referral forms and care maps. If you have not entered your licence key, then this button is not available. To change the size of the Sidebar, click here and drag up or down to make the window taller or shorter.

Looking further at the Sidebar Displays the Home page of the Map of Medicine Display, where you can search for and explore care maps in detail. Displays on-screen help text for Map of Medicine Sidebar and Map of Medicine Display. Displays a list of care maps that you have bookmarked for easy access. Click to view a care map. Note the three main icons under the top ribbon. These give you access to: The Map of Medicine window for viewing care maps (this displays the Home page). Bookmarks: a list of any care maps that you have bookmarked in the Map of Medicine window. On-screen Help for using the Sidebar and exploring the care maps. At the bottom of the Sidebar, note the two buttons in the right corner. The Settings button enables you to set up Sidebar to operate with one of the leading clinical systems. (See our Map Sidebar Configuration Guide for further details). You can use the tabs to change the View so that you can view International care maps. To change back to your local view, click on the Profile icon and select Change View. The Profile button gives you a short menu. CPD report enables you to create a report of your activity (see page 12). Change View enables you to view maps from other regions. Log out closes Sidebar and logs you out. Do not use this if you are integrated with EMIS Sidebar closes automatically when you close EMIS. To enter your licence key, click here, select Enter Practice Details and then Enter Licence Key. For more details, see the Map Sidebar configuration Guide.

Making a referral with EMIS With Map Sidebar integrated with your EMIS clinical system, you can enhance and speed up patient referrals. When you type a condition into the consultation in EMIS, links to the relevant care maps are displayed in the Sidebar. When you load details of a patient into EMIS, the patient s name, date of birth and gender are automatically displayed in Map sidebar. 1 When you start a consultation in EMIS, patient details are displayed in the Sidebar. As you type a condition into the consultation in EMIS, links to the relevant care maps are displayed here. To make a referral: 1. Start a consultation in EMIS and type a condition in the Problem section. This displays relevant details in the Map Sidebar. 2. Where a link in the sidebar is marked with an R icon, you can make a referral. Hover over the relevant icon to display a menu of all the relevant referrals. 3. Select one. The form is automatically opened (in Microsoft Word) and filled with the patient s details. Any details on the patient record that have Read codes relevant to the form will be included. Other items must be filled in manually either immediately or later. 4. Close the file; you are prompted to save the file to the patient record (alternatively, you can set up a reminder). Click on Save form. This saves your referral letter as an MS Word file and saves the details in the patient record. 3 Click on the relevant document to open it the relevant patient details are filled in automatically. 4 Close the document in MS Word. When you see this message, click to save the form or set up a reminder. 2 Move the cursor over any link that has an R icon to give you a list of relevant referral forms. The list includes provider and cost details, plus scheduling details (two weeks/routine, etc.). Menu items marked with an I icon enable you to display a Patient Information Leaflet.

Checking your referral in EMIS Saved referrals If you clicked on Save to Record, a yellow band is displayed above the patient details in EMIS. Click on the band to put the referral in your Documents section in EMIS. Click on the Documents tab and you will see your new referral listed at the top. When you save a referral in Map Sidebar, a message is displayed in a yellow banner above the patient details in EMIS. Click on the link to continue. To check that your referral has been correctly saved, click on the Documents tab. The newly saved referral should be listed at the top. It will also be listed in the Referrals tab. Reminders If you clicked on Reminder (instead of saving the form), a clear message is displayed in Map of Medicine. This includes relevant patient and provider details for you to complete the referral quickly.

Finding referral forms using the Directory Another quick way to find a referral form is to use the Directory. Click the Directory button at the bottom of the Sidebar. This opens a directory of all the referrals forms that are available to you. The list is ordered by department, so you can drill down quickly and easily to find the form you need. You can see different providers and costs. Click on a form to display it in Microsoft Word. The details of the current patient are automatically included in the form. You can change the layout of the display by clicking on the Order Columns button above the main list. There are also information leaflets available for you to view and print. This tells you what the contents of the list are. When you arrive from the Sidebar, this shows all the referral forms that are available to you. If you arrive here from a care map, the list is filtered to show only referral forms that are relevant to that care map. You can search for forms by word (for example, pain), you can search for cost (for example, 100) or by a provider s name (for example, infirmary). You can expand and collapse all levels with a single click. Click on an arrow to drill down through the list. Click on a referral form to view it in Microsoft Word. Searching for a form If you don t know which to department to look in, you can find a form quickly using the Search. Type pain, for example, and the directory will only list forms that contain this word. To go back to viewing the full directory, delete the word in the Search box and press Enter.

Finding guidance using the Directory The Guidance tab in the Directory gives you an alphabetic list of all the guidance available to you. You can easily scroll up and down the list to find what you need. Just click on an item in the list to view the relevant guidance. The information is divided into different tabbed sections: Key messages Presentation Pre-referral (including tests and management of the condition) Referral Resources (including links to source papers) Searching You can search for a specific word, which will reduce the list to items that contain that word. To view the full list again, delete the contents of the search box and click on the Search icon. Guidance is displayed under the Guidance tab (unsurprisingly). You can scroll through the list and click on any item to view guidance. Search for a word to filter the list and find something specific. Use the tabs to view the different sections of information available on the topic.

Quick access to care maps Click on a link in the Sidebar to view the details in the Map of Medicine Display. All the links in the main area of the Sidebar enable you to view care maps immediately in a separate window. Just click on the link that you are interested in. If you don t see what you want in the main area of the Sidebar, you can search for a condition or keyword. Type the word in the Search box and press Enter. Local and international care maps By default, local care maps are listed in the main area of the Sidebar. If you want to view international care maps, click the International tab. Note, you can also change the view while you are exploring a map. In the top menu of the map display, go to Current View. Search for a word to view links to the relevant care maps. And view the care map immediately.

Looking at a care map With the Map of Medicine Pathways window open, you can explore care maps in detail. One click enables you to print or bookmark this map page. Bookmarks are directly accessible from the Sidebar. Click inside the care point to view more detailed information. Print these details. Each care map has one or more pages. And on each page you can view the care points (or nodes of information) that make up the map. To view more information on a care point, just click on it. This displays the information in a separate box on the right side of the care map. Note the other icons that can appear in the lower right corner of a node: L indicates that there is also local information available at this point on the map. R indicates that there is a referral form available to you for this point on the map. (This must be set up in advance for you.) N indicates that there is also National information available at this point on the map. Nodes shaped like an arrow enable you to jump directly to a related page in the care map, or to different care map. Where you have added notes, this is clearly flagged. To find something quickly within the map, click on the Find in page button in the lefthand menu. This gives you a search box. Just type the word, part word or words you are looking for, then click on the Find in page button. Many care maps have more than one page. It is always worth clicking on More pages in this care map (in the side menu) to check. Each care point is colour-coded: Grey: information Green: primary care Blue: secondary care Magenta: tertiary care Red: red flag (serious or complex condition, or urgent or immediate medical attention) Jump to a related page in the map whenever you see an arrow-shaped node

Navigation through care maps When you are viewing a care map, an extended set of options is presented in the left-hand menu. Find in page enables you to search for a word, part word or words in the current page. More pages in this care map enables you to view any other pages in this care map some maps have more than one page. Provenance displays a detailed article on the sources of the information that is in this part of the map. This is not always available for Local care maps. Other Views enables you to view localised pages from other regions. Browse gives you a small window that enables you to browse by Department and Specialty down to individual care maps. A to Z gives you a small window that enables you to browse via the A to Z to find individual care maps. Local Care Maps provides an alphabetic list of maps that are specific to your region. You can scroll through the list and jump straight to any of those pages. Bookmarks enables you to view your bookmarks and go straight to a bookmarked page. History shows recently viewed pages and enables you to jump straight back to any of those pages. You can click on the arrows at the bottom of the side menu to make it smaller. More pages in this care map if the care map has more than one page, you can view others here. Make the menu smaller giving you more space to view the care map. Local Care Maps view and scroll through a list of all local care maps to find another map page. Other views view localised content from other regions. Browse use the Browser to find another care map. Provenance view the evidence behind the information in the map, including hyperlinks to the source papers and accreditations by the specialist stakeholders. A to Z use the A to Z to find another map page.

Using the Search In your Map of Medicine window, Search finds information by keyword or key phrase from any content in the map including the information in each care point. The Search box is available at all times at the top of the Map of Medicine window. For example, you could search for headache to see which care maps are found. The results are displayed in a list, which you can control in the following ways: Click on the tabs to change between local, international and other regional maps. Click any of the show pages links to show the pages for that care map. Click on the show details link to show the pages for all the care maps in the list. You can click on any of the pages listed to view it. Alternatively, you can just click on one of the maps listed to view the first page of that map. Note if you change the view using the tabs here, you will stay using this view until you select to change the view again. (Select the Profile icon at the bottom of the Sidebar and select Change View.) Click to list the pages for this care map. The Search box is always available. Just type a keyword or phrase. Results are displayed as a list. By default you see results for your local care maps, but you can click to view either International maps or maps from other regions. Click to expand the list of results to show the pages for each map listed. Immediately view the first page of this map.

Using the A to Z From the Home page in the Map of Medicine window, click on the Care Map A to Z button in the top area. This changes the display so that each specific map is listed alphabetically. There is an alphabet selector at the top of the area. Click on the letter you want to search for, for example, S if you are looking for information on Spinal injuries. This displays all the maps beginning with S. You can select the one that is most relevant to view it. Click here to use the A to Z finder. Select a letter Then select the map you want to view. Using the Finder On the Home page, the finder enables you to find a care map simply by typing a word or part of a word. For example, you might be looking for maps that refer to urine or urinary. On the Home page, click on the Find a Care Map button in the top area. This changes the display. As soon as you type text in the search box, the display changes to show the maps that include that word or sequence of characters. Click here to use the Finder. As you type in the search box, the display changes to show the relevant care maps. Select the map you want to view.

Professional Development At any time, you can generate a Professional Development Certificate to show that you have consulted the pathways in the course of your work. The report gives details of all the maps you have visited. Optionally, it can include any notes you have added while visiting specific maps (see below). To generate a report: 1. In the Map of Medicine window, go to the Home page. 2. In the top (black) menu, select Professional Development. 3. Select the start and end of the period to be covered by the report, then click Generate my report. To generate a report, select Professional Development from the top menu. Once you have selected the start and end date to be covered (and whether or not to include any notes), click on Generate my report. Adding a note to a care point The report can optionally include any notes you have made while viewing a page. To add a note to a page on the map: 1. Click in the relevant care point in the map. 2. In the box displayed, click on the Notes button at the top and enter your notes. 3. When you have completed the notes, click on Save note at the bottom of the window. This displays an icon in the care point to show that the note has been added. Note: Only notes you have created are visible to you. To add a note to a care point, display the additional information for the node, then click on the Notes button. Add the note details and click on Save notes. After you save the notes, you will see a Note icon displayed in the care point. You can submit any notes as feedback to Map of Medicine. This will be considered during our regular reviews of the Map. Display the note that you have saved and click on Submit as feedback.
