5 Using these Instructions 1 Using these Instructions The following symbols are used within this manual: The spot characterize action instructions: Your action is required. 4 The marker shows the result of your action: Here you learn about the effects of your action. 6 Installing DDS 32 2 Installing DDS Installing DDS 32 To install the Software DDS 32, proceed as follows: Insert the CD-ROM into the drive. Start the program setup.exe. 4 The install shield will start. Follow the instructions on the screen. 2.2 Uninstall DDS 32 To uninstall the Software DDS 32, follow this procedure: Open the Start-Menu. Open the Menu Settings. Open the Control Panel. Open the Module Add or Remove Programs. Choose Kammrath & Weiss DDS inside the window. Click on the Change/Remove button. Follow the instructions on the screen. If you made changes to the program register DDS\bin, you have to remove these files manually after uninstalling the program. 6 DDS 32

7 Starting DDS 32 3 Starting DDS 32 To start the Software DDS 32, proceed as follows: Open the Start-Menu. Choose the menu item Programs Kammrath & Weiss DDS 32. Eventually you get the following error message: Figure 3-2 Error message during the start up If this is the case, please check the following reasons: Is the controller connected? Is the controller switched on? Is the connection interrupted? Is the wrong controller registered? Is the IEEE-card installed correctly and registered? DDS 32 7

9 Getting to know DDS Getting Used to the Menus Inside the Software DDS 32 the following menus are available:. Menu Submenu Shortcut keys Description File Open Ctrl + O Opens a file with measurement data. Measurement Save Ctrl + S Saves the actual data. Save as Saves the data to a new file. Print Ctrl + P Print the actual data window. Export Export the actual measurement data to a Microsoft-Excel-File (optional). Exit Ctrl + X Close the Software DDS 32. Read F8 Read the actual measurement data, e. g. for manual operation. Start/Stop F9 Starts the measurement or stops a running measurement. Reset Ctrl + Alt + R Deletes the data of the actual measurement. Options Set the parameters for the measurement. View Channels F12 Shows and hides the sub window for the Channels. Motor Control F7 Shows and hides the sub window Motor Control to switch between automatic or manual motor control and load const. Temperature Control F6 Shows and hides the sub window Temperature Control to switch the heater on and off and set the heating parameters. All F5 Scale the whole measurement curve to fit the screen. Window Ctrl + W Define the coordination system. Cursor range Scale the section between both Cursors (the section between Cursor 1 and Cursor 2 will be displayed). Last F4 Displays the previous data window. Marker M Displays and hides the marker. Grid G Displays and hides the grid. Remarks R Displays and hides the comments. Origin O Displays and hides the axis for the coordinates. Diagram Store Saves the actual settings of the diagram. List Shows the Diagram listing with the option to delete old settings. DDS 32 9

About Displays the version number for Software DDS Getting Used to the Symbol Bar Some menu commands could be activated by clicking on the symbol in the symbol bar. The following symbols are available: Symbol Meaning Description Exit Closes the Software DDS 32. Contents Open Save Displays the help content (not available at the moment). Opens a file with measurement data. Saves the actual data. Print Prints the actual data window. Read Start Reads the actual measurement data (continuous display of the measurement data). Starts the measurement. Stop Stops the measurement. Windows-Cursor Cursor 1 Activates the windows-cursor (Standard-setting). Activates Cursor 1. e.g to determine the Modulus of Elasticity Cursor 2 Activates Cursor 2. Enlarge The magnifying glass with a (+) enlarges the frame you choose to maximum. 10 DDS 32

11 Getting to know DDS 32 Symbol Meaning Description Reduce The magnifying glass with a (-) shrinks the frame to fit into the screen. Pan All Marker Centers the selected point of the graphic. Scales the size of the measurement curve, to full size. Displays or hides the marker. Remarks Displays and hides the remarks. Grid Displays and hides the grid. 12 5 5.1 The Main Window Figure 5-1 Main Window of the Software DDS 32 The display of the channels can be switched on and off as follows: Select the menu point View Channels ; or press the Key F12. 4 The window of the channels will be shown or hidden. 12 DDS 32

14 5.1.1 Sub Window Measurement The existing channels with the following measurement data can be displayed in the sub window Measurement : Last value Max. value Min. value Value of Cursor 1 Value of Cursor 2 Choose the tab Measurement. Cycles (if a heater is connected) Insert a new Channel To fit in new channels: Activate the sub window Channels if required. Click the mouse on the field Channels, and press the right mouse button. Select the menu point New channel in the context menu. 4 In the sub window Measurement resp. Parameters a new channel will be inserted, which is called Channelx ; x stands for an advancing Number. Edit a Channel Activate the sub window Channels, if necessary. Click with the mouse in the column of the channel you want to edit and press the right mouse button. In the context menu select the menu point Edit Channel. 4 The dialog New Calculated Channel opens: 14 DDS 32

Mathematical Form Besides basic mathematics you can use brackets, mathematical functions, constants and measured values from other channels. The entry of the calculation method for a channel is made in closed notation. Capital and small letters are not differentiated, and space characters could be insert any time! Current variable X As a current variable x, the actual reading index is available. For values measured during a running test, use x = n - 1. Function Functions are called by their designation, followed by an argument inside round parentheses. Enter the arguments of the angular functions in arc units. DDS 32 15

This is done in analogy to function recall. Enter the short name of the channel, followed by the index of the required reading in round parentheses. The value of a channel is zero outside the interval 0 <= x < n (when n readings were taken) 16 DDS 32

Click the column with the required channel, and click the right mouse button. Select the menu point Delete channel in the sub-menu. 4 A safety-warning will pop up: Figure 5-5 Dialog DDS Info Click Yes, to delete the required channel; or click No, to escape from this action. You cannot delete the standard channels Time, Load and Elongation. DDS 32 17

18 Show Channel Name in Window Proceed as follows to create additional channels: Activate the sub-window Channels. Click the right mouse button on the required channel. Select the menu point Show graph in the context menu. 4 The channel shows up in the data window. Caution! The display is not to scale. 18 DDS 32

19 5.1.2 Sub-Window Parameters You may determine the following parameters for the existing channels: Upper Limit Lower Limit Tolerance Upper Hold Lower Hold Select the tab Parameters. Figure 5-6 Sub-window Parameters Determine the required parameter as follows: Click in the field you want to determine. Enter the required value to the field. press the ENTER key or one of the four arrow keys to save the value. You recognize parameter fields that can be edited by the fact that there is a figure or a space holder (***)in it. DDS 32 19

20 5.1.3 Sub-Window Breakpoints This part of the software enables you to determine the Breakpoints. You can either set a load-, or an elongation channel together with a temperature channel. Figure 5-7 Sub-window Breakpoints Proceed as follows to determine the required break points: Click on a numeric field underneath the channel for which you wish to set a breakpoint, using the right mouse button. Select New breakpoint in the context menu. Alternatively, you may double-click in the column where you wish to set a new breakpoint. 4 This will open the menu New Breakpoint. 20 DDS 32

21 Breakpoint for Load Figure 5-8 Dialog New Breakpoint Field Threshold Tolerance Description Breakpoint threshold You should define a tolerance value, for not each single value will be transmitted, with which the breakpoint will be carried out. Threshold tolerance The tolerance depends upon the tensile speed and sampling period. Approximately 5 % of the threshold is a good value to begin with. Timeout Timeout for Holding Time Trigger Options Actions Trigger for the holding point: Rising Falling Both Determines whether or not the holding point is enabled Determines the actions to be carried out when reaching the holding point Alert sound (Beep) Keep source constant Motor stop Click on OK, to set the holding point; or click on Cancel, to delete a holding point. Threshold tolerance The tolerance depends upon the tensile speed and sampling period. Approximately 5 % of the threshold is a good value to begin with. Timeout for Holding Time Trigger for the holding point: Rising Falling Both Determines whether or not the holding point is enabled Determines the actions to be carried out when reaching the holding point Alert sound (Beep) Keep source constant Motor stop Voltage Bias Heater voltage (max. 15 V) Click OK, to set the holding point; or click Cancel, to delete a holding point. 22 DDS 32

23 Edit Breakpoint Delete Breakpoint To edit a breakpoint, proceed as follows: Do a mouse click on the breakpoint that you want to edit, and press the right mouse button. Select Edit breakpoint in the context menu. 4 The dialog Edit Breakpoint will open, ready to edit. Type in new value(s). Click OK, to accept the change(s); or click Cancel, to delete the change(s). You may also double click the field where you wish to edit a break point. To delete a breakpoint, proceed as follows: Click the break point you wish to delete, and press the right mouse button. Select Delete breakpoint in the context menu. 4 A safety request will open: Figure 5-10 Dialog DDS Info Click on Yes, to delete the channel; or click on No, to exit from this action. DDS 32 23

24 5.2 Menu File Open a File To open a file, proceed as follows: Select File Open ; or type in Ctrl + o ; or click on Open in the task bar. 4 The Dialog Load Data will open. Figure 5-11 Dialog Load Data Field File name Type of file Meaning The file you wish to open Selected file format: DDS Data File (Software DDS 32 file) HTS Data Files (File format of the previous version of the Software DDS 32) All Files (all file formats) Select a file. Click on Open, to open the file; or click on Cancel, to abandon the opening process Save Data File To save the momentary values to an open file, proceed as follows: Select File Save ; or type in Ctrl + s ; or click the symbol Save in the task bar. 4 This will save your data in the file that is now open. 24 DDS 32

25 5.2.3 Save Data in a New File To save the data in a new file or in any other file, proceed as follows: 4 Select File Save as ; The Dialog Save Data used for all saving operations will open. Click on Save, to save the data in the selected file; or click Cancel, if you decide not to save the data. DDS 32 25

26 5.2.4 Export Data You may export data for further processing in Microsoft Excel. Select File Export. 4 The Dialog Export Data to Microsoft Excel, used to export data will open. Click OK, to export the data; or click on Cancel, to abandon this operation Print Data To print out data, proceed as follows: Select File Print in the menu. or type in Ctrl + p. or click on the symbol Print in the task bar. 4 The Dialog Print Options to select the printer conditions will open: Figure 5-14 Dialog Print Options 26 DDS 32

27 Define Page Orientation Open Page in the choice and set the page to Portrait or Landscape according to the required layout. 28 Define Head- and Footlines Enter the text you want to show at the page header or footer in the section Header/Footer. Figure 5-17 Sub-window Header/Footer Field Headline Footline Meaning Text for the page headline Text for the page footnote You can use the following space characters in the head- and footline: {$DATE}: actual date with format TT.MM.YY {$TIME}: actual time with format hh.mm.ss View Details To view some detail in the page under way, click Zoom. 4 The display will show a magnified portion of the diagram. Click on Print, to generate a printout of the data; or click on Cancel, if you decide to abandon printing. 28 DDS 32

29 5.3 Exit Program Select Exit, to leave the program; or click on the symbol Exit in the task bar. 4 This will close the program. If there are new or unsaved data, a warning message will open: Figure 5-18 Dialog DDS Info Click on Yes, to close the program without saving; or click on No, if you decide to save the data before closing. 30 5.4 Menu Measurement Record Data Proceed as follows, to record a sequence of readings: Record Data Select Measurement Read from the menu; or press the key F8 ; or click on Read in the task bar. 4 The values will be recorded. Start Measurement Select Measurement Start from the menu; or press the key F9 ; or click on Start in the task bar. 4 The measurement will start. Stop Measurement To terminate a measurement, click on Stop in the task bar; or press the key F9. 4 The measurement will stop. To resume the measurement, press Start or F9. Clear Data Window To erase the last measurement sequence, go to Measurement Reset ; or press the keys Ctrl + Alt + R 4 The Software DDS 32 will show a safety warning: Figure 5-19 Dialog DDS Info Click on Yes, to abandon all readings; or click on No, if you wish to save the data before exiting. 30 DDS 32

31 5.4.2 Determining Measurement Options The following measurement parameters can be determined: Specimen dimensions Experiment modes Motor parameters Specifications of the measuring device Select Measurement Options. 4 The Dialog Measurement Options will show. Specimen Dimensions Select the page Sample. Figure 5-20 Dialog Measurement Options Sample Field Length Meaning Specimen length in mm Depending upon the specimen geometry, this is the distance between the clamping devices, the length of the narrow portion, or the distance between the extensometer blades. Cross section Elongation offset Modulus of elasticity The cross section of the specimen in mm² Starting point of the measurement in µm Modulus of elasticity of the specimen in N/mm² (if known) DDS 32 31

32 Motor Characteristics Select the page Motor. Figure 5-21 Dialog Measurement Options Motor The sub-menu Load speeds is an option. The values entered in this field will determine the load characteristics that pilot the motor in the load controlled mode. This function must be ordered as a separate item. Field Start direction for new measurement Control speed by Elongation speeds Load speeds Regulator amplification Meaning Turning direction of the motor at the beginning of a new measurement: Forward (tensile load increases) Reverse (tensile load decreases) Factor to determine the motor speed,: Elongation Load Tensile speed in µm/s Load increase or decrease in N/s Forward Reverse Maximum speed for standard motors is 20 µm/s. 33 Parameters for the Measuring Mode Select the page Measurement. 35 5.5 Menu View Sub-window Show or Hide Channels You may show or hide the sub-window within the main window as follows: Select View Channels ; or press the key F Activate Motor Control You may activate a window for the motor control as follows: Select View Motor Control ; or press the key F7. 4 This will open the dialog Motor Control. Figure 5-24 Dialog Motor Control Standard The speeds in the window Motor Control apply to automatic measurements. The measurement must be activated by Start. For standard experiments the values apply as entered in page Motor in the window Measurement Options (see Parameters for the Measurement, page 32). DDS 32 35

36 Manual Motor Control Click the button Manual if you want to run the motor manually. Figure 5-25 Dialog Motor Control Manual Symbol Meaning Description Forward Reverse Stop Motor will run forward, increasing the load in the tensile direction Motor will run backward, increasing the load in the compressive direction Motor will stop Motor will only turn, if Read or Start mode is activated. Field Forw. Rev. Meaning Forward Speed Reverse Speed Click on Get, to read the momentary motor speed from the DDS- or HTS- controller and enter it into the software. 38 5.5.3 Open Temperature Control You may control the temperature, if a heating module is installed and activated. To do so, open the dialog for temperature controlling: Select View Temperature Control ; or press the key F6. 4 The Dialog Temperature Control will open: Figure 5-28 Dialog Temperature Control Field Exp. temp. Meaning Required experiment temperature Bias Heater voltage (0 15 V) P I D Proportional parameter of the controller Integral parameter of the controller Differential parameter of the controller The best values for the parameters P, I, and D must be worked out empirically, because they will vary considerably with the specimen material, thickness (the thinner, the more accurate), and the experiment temperature. There are guidelines and examples for this procedure shown in the tensile module handbook. Click on the Get button, to read the momentary values. Click on the Set button after editing these values, to send them to the controller. 38 DDS 32

39 5.5.4 Set New Location for the Coordinate Cross You may place the position of the coordinate cross anywhere in a momentarily opened diagram window: Select View Window ; or press the key combination Ctrl + W. 4 This will open the Dialog View Window : Figure 5-29 Dialog View Window The values you can enter to the Dialog View Window depend upon the settings you selected earlier. Field Elongation Time Meaning Range of the y-axis (displacement) from to Range of the x-axis (time) from to Type in the required values for the x-axis. Type in the required values for the y-axis. Click on OK, to activate the new location for the coordinate cross; or click on Cancel, to exit from this step Fit Measurement Values to Diagram If some portion of the measurement diagram exceeds the size of the diagram window, you may use the automatic fit function. The DDS 32 software changes the coordinate system size to the right size, that all areas of the diagram will fit into the window. Select View All ; or press the key F5 ; or click the symbol Fit in the symbol bar. 4 This will produce a diagram, that is just big enough to fit the window in both directions. Fit Cursor Range to Window Return to Previous View If you selected two points of the diagram with Cursor 1 and Cursor 2, you can make them fit the window. The DDS 32 software automatically changes the coordinate system in such a way, that the region between the two cursors fits the window. Select View Cursor range. 4 All data points between Cursor 1 and Cursor 2 are scaled, so that they will just fit the size of the window. You may change ( jump ) between two display modes. Select View Last ; or press the key F4. DDS 32 39

40 5.5.6 Data Window Layout You may use the following settings to define your own data window: Show or hide marker Show or hide grid Show or hide comments Show or hide coordinate cross Use the following steps for these options: Show or Hide Marker Select View Marker ; or press the key M ; or click the symbol Marker in the task bar; or click the symbol Marker in the context menu. Show or Hide Grid Select View Grid ; or press the key G ; or click the symbol Grid in the task bar; or click the symbol Grid in the context menu. Show or Hide Comments Show or Hide Coordinate Cross Select View Remarks ; or press the key R ; or click the symbol Comments in the task bar; or click the symbol Comments in the context menu. Select View Origin ; or press the key O ; or click the symbol Coordinate Cross in the task bar; or click the symbol Coordinate Cross in the context menu. 41 5.6 Menu Diagram Save Diagram to List You may save diagrams in a List. Select Diagram Store. 4 This will save the momentary diagram to a list List Diagrams You may view all diagrams of a list: Select Diagram List. 4 The Dialog Diagrams will be shown: Figure 5-31 Dialog Diagrams Select the diagram you are looking for. Click the OK, button to display the selected diagram; or click on the Cancel button, to exit from this action; or click the Delete button, to delete the selected diagram. DDS 32 41

42 5.6.3 Edit Remarks You may label the marked points: Click the selected point within the diagram to label it with text or characters. Select Remark in the context menu. 4 The Dialog Edit Remark will open, it is now ready for an entry: Figure 5-32 Dialog Edit Remark Field Text Orientation Meaning Entry for the comment Orientation of the comment: Enter alphanumeric comment.
