1 Installing Wordpress from JMA Lab to JMA Server 1. Take note these instructions are streamlined for the JMA lab they can t be performed in this fashion from home! 2. Wordpress is a database driven web application. In order to host a site, we need to have a database username and password. An account has been created for you (ask your instructor for the username and initial password.) To begin configuring Wordpress, we first we need to update our database password. Open a web browser, and enter 3. Login with the info provided by your instructor. 4. As soon as you login, you will see a General Settings screen, with a Change Password link at the top. Click it. 5. A small dialog window appears; enter a new password twice (this is different from Dori!) and hit Go.

2 6. If the password change was successful, you will see The profile has been updated. At this point, you can close this browser window. 7. We need to get the Wordpress installation files. To start, open a Computer window (not a web browser!), and go to your Z drive, or type \\jmafs\users\login-name (which goes to the same place) then click into your pub folder. Your instructor may ask you to create a separate subfolder for this class - for example, I am making a subfolder named JMA562 to hold my Wordpress installation. Click into this folder once you have created it. 8. I have copied the Wordpress zip file into a shared folder on the network; we need to reach them. Open a second computer window (leaving the first showing your pub folder open), and type \\jmafs\assets\wordpress (and press enter)

3 9. Find either the Wordpress file with the highest number, OR the one the instructor specifically asks you to use. Right click it, hold and drag it into the folder you created inside pub but don t let the mouse go yet 10. When you release, say Extract. 11. A dialog appears asking you to choose the folder. Note Erase the wordpress text (or just wordpress), because the extractor will automatically create a subfolder called wordpress. Hit Extract when done renaming. The extraction (over the network, with people doing it simultaneously) may take a few minutes.

4 12. Wait a bit 13. Now, when the dialog has disappeared, launch a browser. Navigate to your folder using the web address of your pub folder on our server. My address was I m given a language choice option pick English, and hit Continue:

5 15. We get the Wordpress install page. Hit Let s go! 16. On the second screen, we see a set of fields. Enter these values: a. Database Name: Provided by instructor b. User Name: Provided by instructor, same as Database Name c. Password: What you changed it to earlier d. Database Host: localhost (the default value) e. Table prefix: wp_ (the default value)

6 17. Hit submit. You re going to get an error screen this is expected. 18. In the center box of the error screen is a block of text. Click a word in the box and hit CTRL+A to select all of this text. Then hit CTRL-C to copy it all. 19. Switch back to your File Explorer (aka My Computer) window, which should still be open from the first half of this activity, showing your wordpress files. Find wp-config-sample.php. Right click it and choose Edit, OR if this doesn t work Open With->Notepad (if it shows in the menu) or just Open with.

7 20. and then choose Notepad and hit Ok. 21. The default wordpress configuration file opens. We need to edit this file. 22. Hit CTRL-A here (to select all text) and CTRL-V (to overwrite this text with the contents of the install wizard).

8 23. Scroll up a bit if needed to find the /** MySQL database username */ area, and review the username and password 24. In Notepad s menu, choose File->Save as. Change the filename to wp-config.php (removing the sample) and change Save as type to All Files: 25. Hit Save, then close Notepad.

9 26. While we re here, we need to change a set of permissions. Find the wp-content folder, right click your folder and choose Properties (bottom of menu). 27. Uncheck the Read-only box:

10 28. Switch to the Security tab: 29. Hit Edit (which launches a new similar looking dialog the first is the properties dialog, the second is the permissions dialog):

11 a. Highlight the jmaweb account: b. Check the Allow box/column next to Modify: c. Hit Ok to close this dialog d. Hit Ok, to close the properties dialog, which may then show a Confirm Attributes Changes dialog. Hit OK here, too.

12 30. Switch back to the browser, and Hit the Run the Install button at the bottom of the page. 31. Now we re asked to enter some info this will be our site s display name and our login. Enter as guided by instructor, but it doesn t have to match the Database credentials! (This is the User Account for Wordpress, not the database account for the server). If it isn t strong (complex) enough, you ll have to check a checkbox below the password box.

13 32. Hit the Install Wordpress button. This may take few minutes be patient! 33. You SHOULD hit a Success Screen, if so hit Log in 34. or you may instead be taken directly to a login screen if so, try logging in:

14 35. If something has failed, seek assistance, but if all went well, you should see this: which means you are good to go, and no longer the author of this document s problem. 36. Bear in mind your public address will be the folder name you renamed the wordpress folder to for example: And the admin area will be have an extra /wp-admin at the end of the url: Keep in mind any password reset or contact s are disabled on our server.
