1 Sussex Digital Literacy Week Program Weekly Lesson Plans & Activities Sussex Digital Literacy 1

2 Week 1 The Basics Lesson Plan o Complete registration & self assessment forms o Intro: Let s talk basics (Presentation on Hardware, Software and Social media) o Turn on computers: Login in, Shut down properly o Mouse Activity: (if needed) o Keyboard o Desktop icons, how they work i.e.: network connection, battery life, change volume o Desktop: Right click/left click (review the options) o Control Panel (explain add/remove programs) o Change speed of mouse o Change background of desktop with a default choice and from a picture online Sussex Digital Literacy 2

3 Week 2 Files & Folders Lesson Plan o Folders & files: Creating, moving o Create folders on desktop (i.e.: Hampton Joe Smith) Create subfolders (Pictures, Music, Projects) o Internet search engines: Google, Bing, Duck Duck Go (search pictures) o Download pictures to specific folders o Copy file folder picture to USB drive o Open files on USB o Delete folder from USB o Check if everyone has a functioning account o If time: Typing.com sign up as students, sign up for my classroom Sussex Digital Literacy 3

4 Practice Activity Create folders and subfolders Activity #1 1. Create a folder with your name the current year 2. Open your folder 3. Create 3 subfolders Named: Music, Pictures & Projects 4. Open the Pictures folder 5. Create 3 subfolders Named: Dogs, Birds & Sharks Activity #2 1. Open Firefox or Chrome (internet browser) 2. Use Google (search engine) to find pictures 3. Search for pictures for each of your subfolders 4. Open each picture 5. Download each picture, i.e.: Dog picture should be downloaded/saved to your Dogs folder 6. Download and save 3 pictures for each of your picture subfolders Activity #3 1. Open your folder on the desktop 2. Save your folder Pictures to a USB memory stick 3. Open your Pictures folder on the USB memory stick 4. Delete the Pictures folder off the USB memory stick Sussex Digital Literacy 4

Search for Kijiji.ca 2. Go to Kijiji.ca 3. Go to Bookmarks 4. Add Kijiji to the Bookmarks menu 5. Click on Home icon/button Activity #3 1. Search for Youtube.com 2. Go to Youtube.com 3. Search for video on changing the homepage in Firefox 4. Pick a video that is less than 2 years old 5. Click on video and play 6. Stop video 7. Search for How to add websites to your favourites bar 8. Send an to with the name of the song you listened to. Activity #2 1. Search for Costco.ca 2. Go to site 3. Check out their deals on computers 4. What is their featured laptop this week? 5. the brand name and price of the featured laptop. Activity #3 1. Go to Staples.ca 2. Find an HP laptop under $ Write down the screen size, hard drive size, RAM and price 4. Go to Best Buy.ca 5. 13 Week 7 Lesson Plan System & Personal Information Protection o What is anti-virus software? o How does it work? o How to protect against o Viruses o Identity and Password theft o Computer scams o Install and run Malwarebytes, Herdprotect, CCleaner Sussex Digital Literacy 13

14 Practice Activity Virus scan, Personal Identity Protection Activity #1 1. Open the viruscanner you use.ie: AVG, Norton, MacAfee 2. Run a quick scan 3. If issues are found send an to sussex.digital.literacy@gmail.com with the number of issues your scan found. Activity #2 1. Go on-line 2. Find Malwarebytes ( 3. Under For Home find Malwarebytes, anti-malware FREE, click 4. Click on Free Download 5. Under For Home click on download free version 6. Click on Save file when the box pops up 7. Once the file is downloaded, install Activity #3 1. Open Malwarebytes 2. Update Malwarebytes 3. Run a full system scan (1-2 hours) 4. If the scan finds issues, remove. Issues. 17 Week 9 Lesson Plan Uploading & Downloading files from devices; phones, cameras, SD cards, USB sticks o Connect device to the computer o Find the files to transfer o Save files to the computer o Delete files from the device : Note: once a file is deleted from a device, unlike a computer it cannot be retrieved o Move files from the computer to a device Sussex Digital Literacy 17

Create a new folder practice 2016 under My pictures on the PC 4. Move 6 pictures into the practice 2016 folder. 5. Open the practice 2016 folder and delete the 6 pictures 6. Start a new Google slide named My favourite things 3. Add a theme 4. Add 10 slides, each slide should include; a favourite thing, and why you like it, along with a picture. 5. Apply 4 different types of transitions 6. Change the background on at least one slide 7. Insert Word Art on at least one slide 8. Use animation on text in at least one slide 9.
