1 FlipShare (Software for the Flip Camcorders) Opening Flip Share When you plug in a Flip camcorder to your computer for the first time, it will automatically ask you to install the FlipShare software. You do not need to do that. Close that box. Open FlipShare under Start > Programs. The computer will tell you it cannot find the FlipShare Library. Click New and then click My Computer to create a new Library in your H or P drive.* *(It is recommended to have a P Drive folder created by Joe if you are using the cameras for a class project. The students H Drives may not have enough space.) When you are finished using the camcorder, use the eject button in the software to disconnect. You may also right click the camcorder in My Computer and select Eject. 1

2 When you plug in your camcorder, you will see a screen similar to this showing all of the videos presently saved on the camcorder. Select the video(s) that you would like to save by clicking on them. Control click to select more than one. Click the Save to My Computer button at the bottom of the screen. A folder will be created titled by month and year, and the video(s) will be copied to that folder. It is usually located in My Documents > My Videos > FlipShare Data > Videos. You will be asked if you want to remove the video(s) from the camcorder itself. Make sure you are finished with it before deleting. You may also save the video to another location on your computer by selecting a video and then exporting it to a different location. Either right click on the video and select Export to, or go to File > Export to. 2

3 Playing Your Video Double click on the video thumbnail Click on the play button at the bottom of the video To view full screen, click on the Play Full Screen at the bottom of the screen. Keyboard shortcuts when in full screen: 3

4 Editing Your Video Click the scissors icon to the right underneath the video You may trim your video from either the left or the right by using the slider. To replace the original video, click the Replace button. To save a new copy, click the Save As button. If you would like to edit your video further, you ll need to open the video in another program such as MovieMaker. Note: You will first need to convert your video to a format that MovieMaker will recognize. You ll find the directions for conversion on page 6 of this handout. 4

5 Making a Movie Click the Movie button under the Create section of the toolbar You may add more than one video clip by dragging them into the Movie workspace provided. The clips will have fade in and out transitions. You can also add a title, credits, and music to your movie. Your movie will save to one of the FlipShare folders and will show up as a thumbnail in FlipShare Movies shortcuts in the left sidebar. To save it elsewhere on your computer, right click on the thumbnail and select Export As. Taking a Snapshot You may grab a still image from your video in FlipShare. Begin playing the video clip, and stop the video on the frame you wish to take a snapshot from. Click the Snapshot button, and your image will show up under the Snapshots shortcuts in the left sidebar. To save it someplace else, right click on the image and select Save as jpg. Sharing Your Videos By choosing one of these icons in the bottom toolbar, you can send your video as an to another person or share it online. 5

6 Converting Video to Use in Windows Movie Maker (.wmv) The newest version of the Flip software saves the video in an mp4 format. This works great on computers that have the software on them, but it doesn t always work on the internet. Plus, it s usually a very large file. If you want to add your video to your web site, you probably should first convert it to a wmv file to ensure that your viewers can open it. There are several online conversion tools, but one of the easiest and quickest ways to convert is to use the free Real Player Converter. Go here: Start>Programs>Real>Real Player Converter Under Convert to: click to open a new window. Click on the drop down menu (Recently Used/Popular) and select Video Formats. Select WMV 6

7 Under Save in: select Browse and then select your H drive. Now you are ready to drag the file to be converted into the converter. Open your H drive or P drive to locate the FlipShare Data folder you created when you opened FlipShare. Open the Videos folder inside the FlipShare Data folder. To view thumbnails of the videos click on this icon and select Thumbnails. Drag the video you want to convert into the Real Player Converter. Click the round Start button to begin conversion.
