4 Introduction: At A Glance Since 1985, we have integrated technology as a learning tool to enhance, enrich and expand the existing mathematics curriculum. All ten of our programs are designed to work on both Windows and Macintosh computers in the home or at school. On our website we have support material and correlations with the mathematics expectations of many states and provinces. You will find our programs on the recommended list in many districts in North America. Visit our website for: Lesson Plans which correlate our software with curriculum Student Support Sheets and Free Demos Solutions for Student Support Sheets at Ideas on meeting the needs of students through Manipulatives Computer assisted learning Paper and pencil tasks Correlations with state/provincial math objectives Program Objectives: The programs are adaptable to many learning situations individual, student centered and teacher centered They are a flexible learning resource and can be used for remediation, general classroom use and home study A very high level of interactivity engages and motivates the learners The language is simple, clear and mathematically correct A sensible style and approach makes the programs suitable for a wide age range The programs are interactive and are written in such a manner that all learners, from at risk to advanced, have success with minimal teacher or parent help We recognize that the Understanding of Mathematics should be based on a sound foundation of concrete activities and that learning takes place from Concrete to Abstract We believe that users should be able to learn from their mistakes in a non-threatening environment Program Description Understanding Math 2008 Most Topics contain: Concept Sections with graphic explanation Example Sections Practice Sections with interaction Topic Tests and Cumulative Checks where the students progress is recorded The user is in control through: pull-down menus Proceed and Go Back buttons 4

40 Appendix C Making a Share on a Windows Server When doing a network install, you need to make sure that all workstations can access the Understanding Math 2008 (Understanding Numeration 2008) program on the server. How is this done? 1. Create a folder on the server where you want to install the Understanding Math 2008 (Understanding Numeration 2008) program. In this example C:\Apps contains the Understanding Math 2008 (Understanding Numeration 2008) program 2. To ensure that the workstations can access programs on the server, we need to share the Apps folder on the server. Remember, this is where the Understanding Math 2008 (Understanding Numeration 2008) program is located. It is the location where the system folders will be created.
