1 Firmware Update of HighPROTEC Devices This is a description of the firmware update process of HighPROTEC devices by means of a Field Device Installer. This Firmware Update should only be done by users who thoroughly understand the application of the affected device. In addition to that, users who want to do a firmware update should have read and understood this document completely. NOTICE: Executing a firmware update always bears a risk of failure. In a worst-case scenario, a device having failed during the update procedure, may have to be sent to the factory for repair. A firmware update can be available in two variants: Full Update or Hotfix Update. NOTICE: A Full Update will reset nearly all of the device settings to factory defaults. The settings have to be restored after the firmware update. A Full Update will also reset all counters, measured values, states and recorder data. It is not possible to restore them after the update. 12 Troubleshooting Firmware Update not supported Before starting to upload any firmware to the device, the Field Device Installer checks if the firmware currently installed on the device is released for this type of firmware update. If this is not the case, the installation is stopped with one of the following messages: Wrong Device Type The Field Device Installer belongs to a different device type. Recommended action: Use a Field Device Installer that is suitible for your device type. The device's firmware cannot be updated with this installer. Recommended action: Please get in contact with our service team (see end of document). Firmware already installed. Everything s fine, the firmware is already installed on the device. The device s hardware is not suitible for this update: <detailed message> The firmware that you are trying to install does not support the hardware version of your relay. Recommended action: Please get in contact with our service team (see end of document). Document Revision E Page 12 of 15
13 Unstable Connection If the connection between the device and the PC does not work correctly, the installation procedure will stop with the following message: Unstable connection detected. Please check the connection to the device. Recommended actions: Check the USB cable. Verify that the USB cable is plugged in correctly. Restart the firmware update process (restart the installer and restart the device). If this second attempt fails, you can try to start the firmware update from a different PC. Document Revision E Page 13 of 15
14 Firmware Update Failure: Invalid Typecode If the Field Device Installer should detect a device typecode that does not fit to the available typecodes of the installer, the update process is stopped. Recommended actions: Check if you have selected the correct installer file that suits your device type. If the installer file is correct but still does not fit to the typecode of your device, please get in contact with our service team (see end of document). No USB Connection possible If it is not possible to connect the installer to the relay via USB (either the corresponding USB port can not be selected or the connection is not established), please proceed as follows: Check if Smart view release 3.60 or higher is installed on your PC. During the Smart view installation also the necessary USB driver will be installed. Check if the USB port of the PC is still occupied by another program/ application? Close those applications. Is the relay enabled for the firmware update by holding the relay s CTRL key (refer to chapter 8b)? Plug off the USB cable from the relay and plug it in again. After 10 seconds try again to connect the Field Device Installer to the relay. Restart your PC. Document Revision E Page 14 of 15
