OCR Nationals in ICT. Unit 1: ICT Skills for Business Creating a Presentation using MatchWare OpenMind 2 Assessment Objective: 3. Produce a business presentation using presentation software. This lesson is how to prepare a presentation using MatchWare OpenMind 2. Used with MatchWare Mediator 8 to generate an interactive presentation, it will fulfil the requirements of Unit 1, Assessment Objective 3. MatchWare OpenMind 2 is an excellent Mind Mapping tool, and is especially useful in Units 1, 2, 4, 10, 12, and 23. MatchWare OpenMind 2 is also invaluable for any units where students need to brainstorm ideas individually or as a group. Step 1: Step 2: Step 3: Step 4: Step 5: Step 6: Step 7: Getting Started with MatchWare OpenMind 2 Creating the Mind Map Attaching Information Using the Multimedia Catalog Attaching Custom Images The Complete Mind Map Exporting to Mediator MatchWare OpenMind 2 is a powerful, intuitive visual learning tool designed to help develop and organise ideas. MatchWare OpenMind 2 creates feature-rich Mind Mapping diagrams, enhancing creativity, clarifying thinking and improving information recall. At the heart of MatchWare OpenMind 2 is the branching Mind Map structure. This can be rapidly populated with ideas, which can then be transformed into a presentation. As you collect and collate information, you are simultaneously organising it into a logical structure for the presentation. When you are done, you can export your Mind Map to HTML, RTF, Word or PowerPoint. Or for a richer, more professional presentation, transfer the Mind Map to MatchWare Mediator 8 for further development. The context of this lesson will be creating a MatchWare OpenMind 2 presentation on The Current and Future MP3 Player Market. This is based on the OCR Model Assessment for Unit 1: A presentation on the Downloadable tunes business. Though MatchWare OpenMind 2 will only help to fulfil the requirements for Unit 1, this will be your first opportunity to use software that you will use again in other units throughout the qualification. p1
Step 1: Getting started with MatchWare OpenMind 2 Open MatchWare OpenMind 2. In the Welcome screen, select New Document. You will be asked what format of Mind Map view you would like to start your presentation in. Mind Map Top Down: Left Right: Timeline: Outline: If you have random thought processes, seeing ideas in a spreading, non-linear form. If you require more structure, and develop ideas in levels of priority. If you want your ideas to flow from left to right. If your require time dependent plans. It uses a linear left to right format. If you require a table format for chronological, linear ideas. Any format can be used. The first three are probably the most appropriate. This tutorial will use the Mind Map view. Double click Mind Map to begin. You are now ready to create your presentation. p2
Step 2: Creating the Mind Map MatchWare OpenMind 2 begins with the Root branch in the centre of the page. This will be the subject of your presentation. Add the title by left-clicking the Root once and typing the title of the presentation: The Current and Future MP3 Player Industry, then press Enter. From here, a new branch is created for each page of the presentation. A good place to start is by dividing the presentation into Current MP3 Players, and Future MP3 Players. To create a new branch, double-click on the Root. A new branch will appear. Start typing to name the branch: Current MP3 Players. Create another branch for Future MP3 Players. A main branch can have sub-branches by double-clicking on the branch, or pressing Insert. This can be extended indefinitely. Branches can be moved by dragging onto another branch, or elsewhere on the Root. When dragging around the workspace, a temporary blue arrow appears where MatchWare OpenMind 2 thinks you want the branch to go. Release to snap the branch to this location. Add two sub-branches off the Current MP3 Player branch, and name them Phone Players and Dedicated Players. Create two more sub-branches off the Dedicated branch: Hard drive and Flash. p3
Step 3: Attaching information to branches You are able to add different types of multimedia information to the branches. Flash, pictures, video, audio, hyperlinks, text and buttons can be attached to branches. This attachment feature will be used to add content to the presentation. You can also add comments to each branch. These act as reminders or placeholders, and are easy to remove before running the presentation. To add a comment, on the branch: Right-Click>Insert>Comment. You can also press F11. Add your comment by writing directly in the Comment Box Click off the comment box, or press Esc, to minimise the comment to a small yellow icon on the branch. Mouse over the icon for the comment to reappear. Add a comment to the Future branch, reminding yourself to find information on Cochlea Implants. To add text to a branch, MatchWare OpenMind 2 uses the Text Note Editor. In this you can take notes, create bullet points, or paste text into the presentation. To access the Notes Panel, on a branch Right-Click>Insert>Text note>new. The Note Panel will open. Type the text. When you click off the Note Panel, a paperclip icon will appear on the branch. Mouse over to view the text. Click on the text to edit. Add a Note on to the Flash branch, describing how Flash-memory is not affected by bumps. Add another Note on the Root as an introduction to the presentation: In just a few years, a market has been born for portal music devices playing music files, rather than CD's or cassettes. Never before have people been able to carry so many songs at once, with access to thousands of songs on the move! p4
Step 4: Using the Multimedia Catalog MatchWare has integrated a complete Media Catalog containing curriculum-based, royalty-free images for use in the Mind Map. You can search for a type of image or you can use the drop down menu to locate a specific image. The Media Catalog is accessed using the Multimedia tab on the far right of the MatchWare OpenMind 2 window. Click in this to open the catalog. The column can be expanded left by dragging the divider with the mouse. Once a suitable image is located, drag it onto a branch. A pop-up will give you three attachment options: Branch Picture This creates a thumbnail that is shown directly with the branch. Floating Picture This creates a thumbnail that is shown, but is attached to the branch by a grey line, allowing you to place the Image anywhere on the screen while keeping the relationship between the branch and the Image. Attached Picture File This attaches the Image to the branch, but the Image is not directly shown. Attach a suitable music-related image to the Root branch. p5
Step 5: Attaching Custom Images You can also attach Graphics and Audio to your Mind Map. These are any files you have created or acquired. If you only intend to use MatchWare OpenMind 2 for your presentation, you can freely attach files. However, if you intend to export to Mediator for a more advanced presentation, it is more efficient to create your page structure and text content in MatchWare OpenMind 2, and add multimedia content in Mediator. To attach a Graphic: Right-click>Attach Object>Picture File An Open dialogue box appears. Browse for the image, and click OK. The picture will be represented by the paperclip. Mouse over to bring up the file name; click the file name to view the picture. Attach a photo (from the internet, or one you already have) of an MP3 player to a suitable branch. To attach Audio: Right-Click>Attach Object>Sound File Browse and select in the same way. As with all attachments, Audio is represented by the paperclip. Mouse over and click to play the audio clip. Attach an Audio clip to the Phone Player branch, and play it back. Other files types (text, video, Flash, etc) can be added in the same way using the Right-click>Attach Object feature, and will be represented with the paperclip icon. p6
Step 6: The Complete Mind Map So far, this has been a very simple Mind Map. The beauty of MatchWare OpenMind 2 is that a very large, comprehensive brainstorm of ideas can be populated very quickly, giving you an overview and allowing you to visualise your thoughts. Here s one I did earlier: and now each sub-branch can have text, graphics, audio, video, and hyperlinks attached to create a rich multimedia document in its own right. p7
Step 7: Exporting to Mediator You have created the structure of your presentation, and added text and content. The Mind Map can now be exported as a Mediator file to add multimedia elements and interactivity. You can also present directly in MatchWare OpenMind 2, or export to HTML for uploading to the internet. Save your Mind Map. When the Mind Map is exported, it creates a page per branch. To export your project you need to go: File>Export to>matchware Mediator>Quick Export (or, File>Export to>html) The MatchWare Mediator Quick Export wizard opens (or choose Export wizard for more options and templates) MatchWare OpenMind 2 will export the file to the same folder your Mind Map is saved into, or you can browse to another folder. Select your Window Size. For this project choose 640 x 480. From Design select Using Blank Pages. Select Options. To remove the comment boxes from the export, make sure the Floating comments checkbox is deselected. Click Export. Once MatchWare OpenMind 2 has finished compiling and exporting your files it will ask you if you would like to view your project. Select this option and test to see if your project works correctly in Mediator. It does not yet have hyperlinks between pages, but you will be able to view the page structure and text content. p8
Summary. You have: Created a Mind Map; Attached Information; Used the Multimedia Catalog; Attached your own images; and exported your work to either HTML or Mediator. This helps meets the requirements specified by OCR for the creation of a business presentation, as well as how to use Mind Maps in your work. Use Mediator to add more interactive and presentation features (see Unit 1: Perfecting your Presentation with Mediator). p9
