Awesome Airliners Objectives: Use the SMART Notebook software to create a lesson Import graphics and gallery objects Link documents and websites Name, Reorder and Clone pages Save and Export a Notebook file for attaching to a website or ing to students/parents Use the Print Capture feature to print documents from other applications directly into a SMART Notebook file Page 1 of 11
In this training, you will create an Introduction to lesson for a class that you teach. It could be one that would be used on the first day of class to introduce yourself and the course content to your students. You will create a new Notebook file to start and save it to your H: drive. When you are creating Notebook Lessons, you will not need or use the SMART Airliner digital annotation device. This device would only be used when you are presenting the lesson to the class. Create a New Lesson and Add Text and New Pages 1. Launch the SMART Notebook software from the Start Menu. START > ALL PROGRAMS > SMARTBoard Software > Notebook Software 2. If you are using the software on a computer where there is not currently an AirLiner attached to the computer, you will get a message about the software s use. Click I Agree. 3. From the File Menu, choose SAVE AS: Save this file as Intro to English III or something similar to indicate the contents. 4. Page 1 appears and you are ready to enter text. 5. Click anywhere on the page and type in a title, such as: Welcome to English III! 6. Click out of this text box and create a 2 nd text box with contents similar to: Mrs. Connie Smith, Instructor 7. Click out of this text box as well. 8. To edit the text, make it larger, change the font or font size, you will double-click inside of the text box and change the settings on the toolbar. 9. You may also resize the text boxes by single-clicking on the text and using the circular handle at the bottom-right corner of the text object. Use the green handle to rotate the text object. Use the drop-down arrow for various other features such as locking the object in place on the page. Page 2 of 11
10. Add a 2 nd page to this file by clicking on the Blank Page icon in the upper-left corner of the window. A 2 nd page appears in the Page Sorter area of the window. 11. On the 2 nd page, enter text boxes with content in each box similar to what is shown below, modifying the size and color and font as you desire. Import Graphics and Gallery Objects 1. Remaining on page 2, you will now find a graphic on the web to import into your 2 nd page using a very easy method. This method can also be used with other applications. 2. Minimize your Notebook Software file window. 3. Launch Internet Explorer and go to google.com Page 3 of 11
4. Click on the IMAGES link. 5. Enter a search entry as appropriate. I used KU Basketball. 6. Once you find the graphic you want to use, view it in Full Image view. 7. Click on top of the graphic and hold down the left button of the mouse. Drag the mouse down into the Task Tray at the bottom of your window and then drag it over and up into the Intro to Class file you have open. 8. You will now see the graphic appear on page 2 of your Notebook file. Quick and Easy way of getting a graphic you find on the Web into another application! Page 4 of 11
9. Add a new page to the file. 10. One page 3, enter text similar to what is shown below, but using your course contents and sequence. 11. You will now use the Gallery Section to locate a graphic for this page. Use the Search Box located at the top of the Gallery Section to enter an appropriate term to search for. 12. Once you locate a graphic, drag it onto the page and resize it as desired, using the corner handle. Page 5 of 11
13. Practice using the Screen Shade and Full Screen toolbar buttons to go through the existing slides materials. Link Documents and Websites 1. You are now going to learn how to create links to external documents. Create a new blank page. 2. Create THREE separate textboxes with text similar to those shown below. 3. Click the drop-down arrow on the first bulleted item s text box and choose LINK. Page 6 of 11
4. The Insert Link dialog box opens. Choose File on this Computer. Use the Browse button to either browse to a current class syllabus from your H: drive or use the sample class syllabus file on the T: drive in the 2007 January Inservice Awesome Airliners folder. Click OK. You now should see a paperclip icon indicating that the text is a link to the document. Click on the paperclip to open the document. This is an easy way to gain quick access to files on your computer without taking class time to locate. 5. An alternative to linking documents on a page is to make them Attachments. Click the Attachments Tab at the far right side of your Notebook window. 6. Click the Insert button located at the bottom right corner of the Attachments Tab. Choose Copy of File. This will embed the chosen file so that it is actually part of the Notebook file itself. 7. Browse to any file located on your H: drive and select it. Notice that the Class Syllabus file linked before is also now located on the Attachments Tab. Any document on the Attachments Tab can be opened by double-clicking on it. This again, is a nice way of quickly accessing and organizing your documents. Page 7 of 11
8. Now you will make an additional text box and link to your teacher website or another website. 9. Create the text box and use the drop-down arrow to make a link. 10. Choose Website and then link to your teacher website as shown above or the school website Notice the icon is a world instead of a paperclip, indicating a link to the WWW. 12. Save the file before continuing. Name, Reorder and Clone Pages You will now use the Page Sorter Tab to practice naming, reordering and cloning pages. 1. Click the Page Sorter Tab to view it. 2. Click the 1 st page thumbnail and click the drop-down arrow at the top right corner. Choose Rename Page. Page 8 of 11
3. Rename the page Welcome. 4. Rename the other pages appropriate names such as those shown below. 5. Drag the thumbnail for page 4 above page 3 to switch the order of the 2 pages. You will see a dark blue line when you are ready to release the mouse button. 6. Click the 4 th page and use the drop-down arrow to choose Clone Page. This makes a duplicate of the page for you to edit. Get rid of this unwanted page by choosing Delete Page from the drop-down menu. Page 9 of 11
Save and Export Notebook Files You have been saving your file hopefully as you have been working on it. The file you have been saving is a Notebook File with an extension of.notebook. This type of file can only be opened with the SMART Notebook software that it was created with. If you want to share this lesson with your students easily, you can export it as a PDF file. Then, you could attach to a website or GroupWise assignment s calendar for students to access from home. 1. To EXPORT your file as a PDF document, choose Export from the File Menu. Then choose PDF 2. Choose the location and desired name for the file and click OK. 3. The PDF file is created and you can now link or as desired. Use Print Capture to Print Documents from Other Applications 1. If you currently have a MSWord document, PDF document or PowerPoint document, you can open that document and choose FILE > PRINT. 2. Then, choose the SMART Notebook Capture printer and your document will be printed into the Notebook software file that is open or a New Notebook file. 3. The pages are printed as images into the Notebook software. 4. You may also copy and paste text from other documents. 5. Using this method, the text remains text, instead of becoming an image. Page 10 of 11
QUIZ Time 1. Create a blank 5 th page. 2. Using the Gallery Tab, enter Jeopardy in the search term box. 3. Drag the interactive Jeopardy type squares onto page Create 3 quiz items over your About Me page that students might remember. 5. After entering the question and answer, right-click on each square and choose Locking > Lock in Place. 6. Lastly, view your entire presentation in full screen view. 7. Save your file. Page 11 of 11
