ContentsTable of contents (if desired) I. What are the IoT challenges on the Waste Management area? II. IoT approach taken III. Creating a LPWAN Waste Management Solution IV. Practical cases V. Lessons learnt VI. Feedback received and future evolutions VII. Next steps on LPWAN support
What are the IoT challenges on the Waste Management area?
When we think about IoT and Waste Management
We have a different points of view US Sensorize Track Optimize Client Save money Be cool New services
It is true though that it depends on the type of client
Not all the clients think about money Waste management companies Local authorities Tech companies of all sizes
Client s point of view of IoT on Waste Management Waste management companies Reduce number of staff and equipment Be aligned with city/region Smart requirements Have a low cost solution
Client s point of view of IoT on Waste Management Local authorities Have a Smart City Have a greener city Offer new services to the citizens Pay the same to the contractors
Client s point of view of IoT on Waste Management Tech companies Small companies: Sell an engineering project Big companies: Sell a platform to the city Telecom carriers: Sell connectivity and a platform to the city
What a Waste Management IoT system shall offer? Deploy the sensors over a network Integrate them in an IoT Platform Provide a Management App Provide a mobile app / alarm system Provide connectivity Provide extra services (routes, alarms )
IoT approach taken
How do we use IoT on Waste Management? Waste Management App Volumetric Sensor Measuring Volume Weight Sensor Measuring Weight Locked containers with access control Measuring Times used
How do we use IoT on Waste Management? Ultrasounds - Simplest and cheapest solution - Adaptable to any container or type of garbage - Problems with some type of garbaage Weight cells - Very precise measurement - Depends on the container - Not always a nice spot to weight - Not easily integrable Access control - Control on who is throwing - Needs to provide containers with bagsized apertures - Not easily integrable on any container
Why we picked up the ultrasonic sensor? Need for a generic solution Valid on mostly any container type available on the market The now market requests cheap IoT verticals in low volumes
Creating a LPWAN Waste Management Solution
Vertical requirements Test & Validation Table of contents (if desired) Creating a Waste Management vertical Own requirements Prototype a sensor Create a sensor Electronic design Documentation & Marketing Data sheets / User Manuals Contractor companies requirements Antenna/Radio design Mechanical design Marketing material Firmware development IT companies requirements Cities requirements Prototype a management application Create the management app Sensor integration App development IoT Waste Management Vertical
Creating a Waste Management vertical Critical points when creating such an IoT product Radio technology Critical for convenient coverage, data exchange and battery consumption Battery Shall be as smaller as possible, but shall make last the device as longer as possible. Its size depends on technology choices HW design It s key to pick up the best compromise between price, reliability, availability and power consumption. The sensors included shall provide reliable measurements at a moderate price FW design Firmware shall be proven to be stable, non-intrusive, power performant and capable of performing selfrecovering procedures Housing Waste containers are a harsh environment where the appropiate housing is key to assure the endurance. It also shall enable a simple installation procedure
Creating a Waste Management vertical Impact on battery is key Radio technology Battery HW design FW design Housing N/A Medium impact Small impact N/A Big impact Battery will determine how long the device will be working and the radio technology will determine its size and price
We need to be smart when chosing the IoT radio technology let me explain
What NOT to do This is a real Waste Management deployment Yes, that s a repeater!! There is one in each group of waste containers The choice has been surely made to have a low consumption radio technology Thankfully new IoT networks are available to avoid this nonsense LPWAN technologies have a lot to say about this
IoT radio technologies NB-IoT is coming!
Chosing a radio techology There is a feature where LPWAN beats other technologies LPWAN SIGFOX GPRS WIFI
Chosing a radio techology But there are others where LPWAN underperforms cellular Data throughput Data reliability Not always bidirectional Not always deployed The money machine of certification So we finally created a dual Sigfox and GPRS device as we re on a market with a low volume yet
Optimizing the antenna for LPWAN (sub-ghz)
Once chosen the radio technologies we created the full vertical
Electronics for a generic product Expansion slot for future IoT radio technologies Cellular or Sigfox modem (chosen in production)
Creating a device for the IoP The Internet of Things is yet an Internet of Pilots Outsourced production lines not suitable for volumes of 100s The product is created with a modular architecture, that will allow small productions and the easy addition of new techologies
Creating the Management App
Creating an open architecture Cellular case 2G network MQTT Broker MQTT 2G Network MQTT MQTT Waste management sensor Management app
Creating an open architecture Sigfox case Sigfox base stations Backend SIGFOX HTTP JSON Callback Waste management sensor Management app
The need to work with countless IoT Platforms MQTT MQTT HTTP JSON HTTP JSON HTTP JSON HTTP JSON MQTT HTTP JSON HTTP JSON Callback
Meet the TSwasTe
Practical cases
Deployments Pilots and larger deployments in more than 30 countries Mostly cellular, but increasingly based on LPWAN tech The sensor is currently on its third HW version. Working on the fourth
Deployments around the world
Deployments around the world 1st Sigfox Waste Management deployment EVER A sensor that is tweeting the reports every two hours and it has already done it times
Lessons learnt
Network coverage Cellular vs LPWAN Cellular coverage is good, even in mostly difficult installations In some cases, an external antenna might be needed adding significant cost to the solution LPWAN (Sigfox) coverage is mostly good, working in difficult installation if a base station is near It will need to be densified more No LoRa no NB-IoT yet
Waste fractions behaviour Other Good behavior Organic Good behavior Glass Very good behavior Plastics Good behavior Paper Medium/bad behavior
Types of container Not all containers are suited for a single sensor design A wider beam, averaging level, might cause echo problems The installation procedure might also be a problem
Calibration of the sensor in extreme conditions Ultrasounds are affected by heat Initial deployments have been key to improve our calibration procedures
Unusual behaviors of the PEOPLE Other Waste fraction container in Barcelona
Unusual behaviors of the PEOPLE Garbage is collected around 22:00h every day During weekends the graph is smaller as less activity is detected
Unusual behaviors of the PEOPLE Suddenly, one day, something extrange happened Containers at 100% twice in 24 hours!!
Unusual behaviors of the PEOPLE
Unusual behaviors of the PEOPLE No collection at 22:00 that day and the container was full after that A non scheduled collection around 7:00 AM with a rebound effect after Collection during the evening with an echo effect right after
Unusual behaviors of the PEOPLE What happened the day of the final? Weekend event. Not many gargabe Colection with just 20% of filling level People getting the trash to the waste containers on Monday morning
Data analysis An efficient deployment shall go beyond the data collection Machine learning and predictive analysis shall be applied in order to have relevant outcomes The objective will be to have savings on energy, work hours, equipment and environment damages and an overall improvement on the waste collection service Sensors Events Analytics Business Intelligence Service improvement Historic data
Feedback received and future evolutions
Feedback received Direct application on containers installed in remote locations Application in cities might require an app twist adding significant added value Price on volume shall be far below the 10% of the cost of the container Volume measurement is OK for some contractors, others seek further things One has to be ready to provide a full vertical but also an open solution integrable with 3rd party apps
Improvements requested & implemented All-time activated fire detection All-time activated accelerometer LoRa NB-IoT Other networks GPS per request to locate lost containers
Next steps on LPWAN support
Sigfox Table of contents (if desired) Reducing footprint of communications and battery Reduce costs
LoRa Table of contents (if desired) Deployments on going Products getting ready Not as spread as Sigfox
NB-IoT Table of contents (if desired) IoT device makers waiting for first modem samples ANYONE ON THE ROOM?
So what s next? Getting out of the IoP Volume to enable cheaper, more compact solutions Waste Management needs Big Data Waiting for new LPWAN networks, but not too many! Equipment manufactures shall cooperate with tech companies and have IoT integrated from the very beginning
