3 Samsung s 2-Day Workshop on ADVANCED EMBEDDED INTELLIGENCE Details of Expert Speakers, Speaker Profiles & Abstract of Topics SPEAKER - 1 Balaji Srinivas Holur Senior Vice President Division Head, Android MM Systems Division Speaker Topic :- Introduction to Embedded Intelligence Balaji Srinivas Holur is currently the Senior Vice President at Samsung Research India Bangalore, and Head of Android Platform & Multimedia System Division, responsible for Multi Media solutions for the next generation handheld devices based on Android file systems. His areas of interest includes Image, Video tied to vision elements including multi sensor & sensor networks developing HW and SW IP solutions. He holds M. Tech. and M.S degrees from IIT/Kanpur and OSU respectively. He has around 24 years of technology leadership experience working with companies like Bell Research, Cisco, Texas Instruments and Samsung. He was the architect and founding member of a highly successful startup IpMobile which was later bought over by Cisco. He holds 50+ US Patents in his name. He was elected first Distinguished Member of technical Staff at Texas Instruments Bangalore. He was selected for Harvard Global Executive program to influence vision2020 of Samsung global operations. In today s world which is feasting on communication enabled by ubiquitous smart devices such as smartphones, there is a new paradigm evolving which can be termed as On Device Intelligence or more technically referred to as Embedded Intelligence. This two word phrase signifies the ongoing revolution in terms of raw devices with enhanced artificial intelligence features, morphing into smart intelligent systems, which stand up to & challenge human intelligence, transforming themselves into personal assistants, capable of doing multitude of high complexity brainy tasks, on a day-to-day basis. This 2 day workshop facilitated by domain experts from Samsung R&D Institute-Bangalore, is expected to immerse the audience in the state-of-art technologies that power such Embedded Intelligence. The series of tutorial style talks are aimed at providing in-depth knowledge of technicalities & practical challenges involved in designing & developing embedded systems. Our experts will take you through the building blocks and component technologies such as

4 embedded architectures, android anatomy, machine learning & deep learning applied to multimedia systems, hardware acceleration, heterogeneous computing. All this embedded aspects in a smartphone can be imagined to become a powerhouse of features and technologies, which comes at a cost, demanding the excellence in power management. One of the final talks in this workshop does throw light on this aspect. We at Samsung believe that this workshop enables you to understand the nitty-gritties of engineering a powerful personal device such as a smartphone, which in turn helps you understand the limits of technologies involved. This workshop also has the potential of throwing up technical challenges which are yet to be solved as well, all coming from the mouth of industrial practitioners who have put in more than a decade experience in each of the above topics. The intention is to being a completely industrial perspective to intelligent embedded systems. SPEAKER - 2 Speaker Topic :- Android Anatomy Vanraj Vala Senior Principal Engineer Vanraj Vala is a Senior Principal Engineer in Samsung R&D Android Platform & Multimedia System Division. He has been with Samsung from past 11+ years and has been part of the building Galaxy Series smart phones from past 7 years. His work involves design & development of Android Framework module & Applications for Samsung next generation experience & intelligence services. He has led the development for Bixby Home application development in Samsung s latest Galaxy S8 Smart Phone. He has also taken up the role of Architect for Android platform group recently. Android is an open source and Linux-based Operating System for mobile & other embedded devices. Android was developed by Google and led along with Open Handset Alliance and other companies. It is one of the most accepted & successful OS in Mobile industry running 88% of mobile devices. This talk is design to give brief on internal working of Android SW component. How each Android component designed & works together to give user best experience & at a same time provides essential building block to developer to build amazing solutions.

5 SPEAKER 3 Speaker Topic :- Embedded Prog. to Heterogeneous Computing : A whole new world of possibilities Anurag Mithalal Jain Senior Principal Engineer Samsung R&D Institute India Bangalore Anurag Jain is a Senior Principal Engineer at Samsung R&D, Android Platform & Multimedia System Division. He did his Masters from I. I. Sc., Bangalore, in Electrical Engg. & Bachelors from NIT Surat, in Computer Science. He has 19 years of experience working in the field of multimedia, imaging and video signal processing with 8 US patents filed and several papers in internal technical conferences. Prior to joining Samsung, he worked for Texas Instruments as Senior Architect. He has delivered guest lectures at I. I. Sc., I I T-Kanpur & several other institutes in the past. His interest areas include processor architectures, heterogeneous computing, digital signal processing and multimedia compression. Embedded software and application software are like apples and oranges making them difficult to compare point-wise. The fixed hardware requirements and associated constraints drive most of the software engineering aspects and one has to be savvy enough to effectively utilize the limited resources. Some chipsets are equipped with processors heavily optimized for specific type of operations. The heterogeneity of available computing resources leads us into the next part of the talk on Heterogeneous computing. SPEAKER 4 Speaker Topic :- 5G Primer Ashok Kumar is currently Principal Engineer with Advanced Modem team at Samsung R&D Bangalore. He received M.E degree in Telecommunications from I. I. Sc., Bangalore in His work & research interests include physical layer and cross layer algorithms design for wireless systems. In 2005, he joined physical layer algorithms team at Beceem Communications, where he was part of core algorithms team responsible for modem activities of WiMAX and LTE. This team was later acquired by Broadcom. In 2013, he

6 joined SRIB advanced modem team working on cross layer activities and Pre-5G system design. He is Senior Member of IEEE (2014) and inventor in more than 10 patents spanning wireless system design and 3GPP specifications. AshokKumar Reddy Chavva Principal Engineer Fifth generation (5G) of mobile communication systems are making their way to real deployments while we experience 4G LTE. Unlike any existing wireless systems, 5G systems are being designed to handle various new use cases over a very wide range of bands including mmwave bands. Cellular communication over mmwave is not trivial and needs technique called beam forming, to make it possible. In this talk, I will touch upon the basics of beam forming and need for beam forming at mmwave as well as basic procedures in cellular systems with this new dimension. Talk would also include a glimpse of 5G NR (New Radio) specification and introduction to 5G numerology. SPEAKER 5 Speaker Topic :- On-Device Artificial Intelligence Venkappa Mala Venkappa Mala is working as a Group Engineering Manager at Samsung R&D Bangalore in Systems & multimedia division. His current research includes Heterogonous Computing, Machine Learning & Acceleration. He has over 12+ years of experience in Embedded Software, Linux kernel & BSP and Dynamic Linker development. He was in Samsung Head Quarters in South Korea for a year & worked closely in commercializing many Smart phones. He has worked with Google, USA for Android development during ICS release. He has overall exposure in end-to-end development of

7 Group Engineering Manager embedded software for products from designing, coding, debugging, testing and commercialization. To make our vision of intelligent devices possible, we knew that the machine learning-based solutions would need to run on the device. Whether a smartphone, car, robot, drone or a machine, running the AI algorithms (inference) on the device versus in the cloud has various benefits. Such as, immediate response, enhanced reliability, increased privacy and efficient use of network bandwidth. This tech talks covers more on smartphone based inference engine. SPEAKER 6 Speaker Topic :- Introduction to ML & Advances in Deep Learning Dr Sandeep Palakkal Chief Engineer Dr. Sandeep Palakkal got his Ph. D. in image processing from IIT-Madras in He has worked on problems in signal & image processing, computer vision & machine learning, published in peer-reviewed international journals, conferences. He joined SRIB, in 2015, where his work primarily focused on computer vision & deep learning solutions. Prior to joining Samsung, he worked for Nielsen, on facial expression & EEG signal analysis. He has also served as a visiting professor at Indian Institute of Information Technology Design & Manufacturing (IIIT-DM), Kancheepuram, where he offered graduate level course on signal processing in 2013, & as lecturer of Dept. of Electronics & Communication at Amrita School of Engineering, Kollam, Kerala, in Machine learning & deep learning are among the fastest growing fields today. This talk provides a brief introduction to Machine Learning, by building an overall picture of Machine Learning as practiced in the industry. It also gives an introduction to deep learning & deep neural networks, by reviewing the latest literature & evolution of convolutional neural networks. Talk also dwells on recurrent neural networks & their applications. Overall objective of the talk is to provide quick glimpse of the practical technical challenges, which in turn may help take up research in this vast area.

8 SPEAKER 7 Speaker Topic :- Advances in Heterogeneous Computing Kiran Nataraju Principal Engineer Kiran is a Principal Engineer in Samsung R&D, Android Platform & Multimedia Systems Division. He did is Bachelors in Instrumentation Technology from SIT, Tumkur. His current work involves Imaging & vision solution development & acceleration on mobile platform. He has 17+ years of experience in the IT industry working on various domains including Imaging & Vision, Embedded System development, System Power & Performance. He has been involved in complete development and bring-up of embedded platform for Samsung wearables, as well as been part of many commercialization projects. In addition his specific interest areas are acceleration on embedded platform & processor architecture. Currently he is leading a team on Imaging & Vision acceleration through OpenVX. Heterogeneous computing refers to systems that use more than one kind of processor. The drive to improve performance and the continuing constraints on power and scalability in multi-core CPU development has increasingly led to exploration of Heterogeneous computing. Today s mobile hardware has a mix of multi-core computing units, like CPU/GPU/DSP, with specialized processing capabilities to handle particular tasks. Heterogeneous computing brings together the best of such multi-core computing units to deliver better experience and performance within the power budget. Interested to learn more, then join this session SPEAKER 8 Speaker Topic :- Power & Thermal Management in Embedded devices Praveen is currently the Group Engineering Manager in Samsung R&D Android Platform & Multimedia System Division. He did his Bachelors in Instrumentation Technology from BIET, Davangere, securing University first Rank & 2 gold medals. He has 17+ years of experience working in system software. He has delivered guest lectures in several colleges. He has participated in defining syllabus in many colleges for UG & PG courses, in VTU. After joining Samsung, he has led Power & Thermal management team, currently leading text Intelligence team. He is also co-inventor in 1

9 Praveen Bangre Group Engineering Manager patent. Apart from power & thermal management, his interests lie in the areas such as Android platform, Big Data Analysis and Machine Learning.. Power management is very crucial for all battery operated devices. Popularity & penetration of Smart mobile phones, coupled with the advancements in the Processor Technologies have given raise to wide range of technical solutions, each involving high computational needs. All this has to be done with limited power storage available in Batteries.So far, engineers are given a requirement, like, for given X input, generate Y output within M milliseconds. However, engineers are not prepared for the requirements such as, for given X input, generate Y output, in M milliseconds by consuming less than P mw power. Would you like to know how? SPEAKER - 9 Dwarakanath Babu K S L D Group Engineering Manager Speaker Topic :- AGILE Practices Dwarakanath Babu is currently Group Engineering Manager in Samsung Process Innovation team. He did his Bachelors in E & C & M.B.A. He has nearly 2 decades of Software Quality Experience. He has designed & deployed org. level Quality Management & Software Process Improvements using Models like CMM, CMMI, ISO, Non Models like 6 Sigma, Agile. He has played key role as member for High Maturity Assessment like CMM Level 4, 5 & CMMI Level 4. He is Executive Committee Member of Bangalore Software Process Improvement Network (BSPIN). He is certified in PMP, CSQA, Scrum (CSP) & Kanban. He has conducted conferences & given sessions on Agile & Software Engg.. Currently he is heading SW Agile Process Innovation at SRIB. An important aspect of organization maturity lies in processes followed. Agile development refers to group of software development methods based on iterative development, with requirements, solutions evolving through collaboration between self-organizing cross-functional teams. Agile methods promote disciplined project management, encourages frequent inspection & adaptation. It encourages self-organization, accountability & best practices intended to allow for rapid delivery of high-quality software. This talk is about "How Agile is practiced in Industry?".
