1 ONE HOUR ANIMATION minutes Will you be a Scratcher upon completion of this session? Definitely. Learn how to write a basic script to animate a sprite. 1. A computer or laptop A computer or 2. A mouse is helpful laptop 3. If you have them, usb drawing A mouse tablets is would helpful be fun to use in this workshop. If you have them, usb drawing tablets would be fun to use in this workshop. 1. Learn how to use the drawing tools built into Scratch. 2. Create a new sprite. 3. Animate your sprite by writing a simple script. 4. Become familiar with how to program in Scratch. Open Scratch (or, if Scratch is already open, click the File on the top navigation bar and choose New from the dropdown menu.)

2 New Scratch projects always start with cat sprite. You re going to make your own sprite, so you need to get rid of the cat. Click the scissors, and then click the cat. Make a new sprite by clicking on the paintbrush-star button (Paint new sprite button.) This will open the Paintbox. When the Paintbox window opens, click on the magnifying glass with the minus sign to zoom all the way out. Try the different tools: Paintbrush, Eraser, Paint bucket (fill tool,) Rectangle tool, Ellipse tool, Line tool, Select tool, Stamp tool, and Eyedropper. Click on Brush Size to change the size of your paintbrush or eraser.

3 Draw a simple object a face, a bug, a??? Don t draw the background. We ll do that later. Here s a simple rectangular face Click the OK button when you re satisfied with your drawing. Next, we re going to create another costume to animate the sprite. Click the Costumes tab for your sprite in the center panel of the Scratch program. You should be able to see the costume you just created. Click the Copy button, and this will make an exact copy of your sprite. Find the copy of your original drawing ( costume2 in this case.) Click the Edit button. This will open the Paintbox. Make some small changes to your sprite. Make the eyes close, or make antennae wiggle, or????

4 Click OK and you ll see the two costumes of your sprite. To preview the animation, you can click once on each costume icon, back and forth, and your sprite will animate! Next, we need to create a script to animate the sprite. Do this by clicking on the Scripts tab and dragging blocks from the leftmost panel to create our program. Look for the blocks panel in the Scratch program. You ll see a bunch of colored buttons that open different programming block types. Click the Looks button and you ll see a bunch of blocks that can change how your sprite looks. Find the switch to costume name # block. Click on the little black arrow next to the name. You ll see a list of the names of all the costumes. Go back to the blocks panel and find the yellow Control button. Find the wait block in the list below. Pull this out and snap it under the switch to costume # block. Repeat with the with Looks and Control blocks until your blocks look like this:

5 Notice that the wait time in the picture is 0.1 seconds. You can click in the white number bubble and change the wait time. You might want to fiddle with this to make your animation look exactly like you want it to look. Pull out a forever block from Control and snap it around all the other blocks. You should see the forever block expand to accept the rest of the blocks You re almost done! Now look under Control and find the when (green flag) clicked block and snap it on top of the forever block. This will make your program start when you click the green flag. Click the green flag button in the upper right hand corner and your animation should move on its own. It won t stop moving until you click the red stop sign. Congratulations! You ve created a Scratch animation!

6 My sprite isn t moving! > Check your change to costume # blocks. Do you have the same costume listed twice? > Check your wait times. Is the wait time so short that your animation is moving too quickly for you to see? My animation only worked once! > Did you put all the blocks from the animation script inside the forever block?
