7 9/20 Graphics Editors? There are many graphics editors Some are free, some quite expensive Some better at different tasks We ll use (free graphics editor for Macs)

8 10/20 Prepare for Saving Work on Your USB? Plug your USB stick into a USB port Right-click on the Untitled device in Finder and rename it with your last name Right-click and add a folder named pixen

9 11/20 Overview Open Click Hide Others (or press Alt-Cmd-h ) to hide everything but s windows Later you can click Show Others to bring everything back Your tool box is on the left, your paint palette on the right Select File New Set size to (64x64) for our first animation click Use This Size Now you have a canvas in the middle with a filmstrip at the top?

10 12/20 Save It? Save your new animation file (.pxa) to your USB s folder: File Save Name the file Make sure the File Format says Put it in your USB s folder and click Save

11 13/20 Our First Cel? Select the pencil tool in the Left Tool window Choose a color: under Left Tool click the colored (black?) rectangle at the bottom In the Colors dialog click the crayon box (5th tab) and choose a color Note: if it won t let you select a color, try switching to the Crayons tab.

12 14/20 Draw Something!? This is the first frame of an animation, so you might want a profile view of your critter Try to use your space (don t draw something tiny in the corner) Notice that each color you use in your drawing is added to your palette for quick selection The grey and white background indicate transparent areas of the drawing

13 15/20 More Tools? Try the Ellipse, Rectangle, and Line tools. Try using the Fill tool to pour paint into one of your closed shapes Use Edit Undo Drawing (or Cmd-z ) to undo something you did and Edit Redo (or Cmd-shift-z ) to redo something you undid Test out the eraser tool.

14 16/20 Tool Properties? Each of the tools has properties you can adjust Double-clicking a tool shows its properties Double-click the Eraser tool Change the Line Thickness to 5 and try erasing something Explore the properties of some of the other tools

15 17/20 Our Second Cel Right-click your first Cel and choose Duplicate Cel Select Show Previous Cel Overlay Use the Eraser to remove the parts of the first frame that will move (e.g. legs and arms) Redraw the erased parts in a new position, shifted slightly from the previous position Click the Preview button above your canvas In the Preview window click the gear icon and change the size Watch your Preview as you adjust your Cels?

16 18/20 More Cels? Continue duplicating cels and modifying them until you ve reached the middle of your animation Save frequently Duplicate previous cels and place them correctly to bring your animation back to the start For example: if you draw 3 frames duplicate the 2nd: (1,2,3, 2 ) If you drew 4 frames: (1,2,3,4, 3,2 )

17 19/20 Saving Your Work Your animation file (.pxa) is already in your USB s folder Now export a sprite sheet to use in Stencyl: Export to Sprite Sheet Check the box next to the appropriate.pxa file and click Save Name the file and put it in your USB s folder Verify that your work is saved: Open Finder Navigate to your USB and look in the folder?

18 20/20 Static Images? You can also use do draw non-animated images, e.g.: An actor when standing still Backgrounds Splash screens
