1 W717 Keeping the Array System Up-to-Date Pre-requisites: None This session should prove invaluable for Array system administrators. Discussion will center around keeping your hardware and software up-to-date, through hardware upgrades and moving to the latest version of Array. Specific details on how the update process works and the differences between AIX versions will also be covered. 2 3 Return on Investment Opportunity Each Array release contains more features that: Make the system easier to use Allow each employee to be more productive 4 Array Upgrade Path 5.0B 6.0C - Forms changes are needed 6.0B 6.0C - Forms changes are needed 6.0C No forms changes needed for this release, CQ must be upgraded to 7.1 on Array Forms changes are needed for this release, COBOL is upgraded to on 9.0

3 5 Array Upgrade Path Forms changes are needed for this release, CQ upgrade to 7.2 on No forms changes needed Currently no forms changes needed 6 How to Request the Latest Array Release Upgrade requests are made from the Customer Web Site Choose the Upgrade Center shortcut on the left side of the screen. Use the drop down button to choose the latest release The Array upgrades are free upgrades. There is no charge to upgrade to new version of Array

4 7 AIX Software Activant will continue to support your current version of AIX Activant is currently supporting AIX 3.x to AIX 5.3 When on an older Array release, moving forward it may be necessary to upgrade AIX Some third party software does not work properly on an older version of AIX AIX 5.2 does not support all hardware 8 Log Files Used by Array and AIX /etc/security/failedlogin logs failed login attempts to the system File can be removed and will be created automatically

5 9 Log Files Used by Array and AIX /var/adm/wtmp tracks past logins to the Array server File can be removed and will be created on next reboot File can be cleared using - >/var/adm/wtmp 10 Log Files Used by Array and AIX /var/adm/sulog Tracks users who have used the su command to switch to another user File can be removed and will be created when a new record is written

6 11 Log Files Used by Array and AIX /olog/rclog Transaction logger that logs all transactions and starting in 12.0 logs record locks File is cleared out nightly during the DAYEND processing 12 Log Files Used by Array and AIX /tss/live/pickies - Tracks print error messages between Array and AIX File will continue to grow unless deleted Files is created when new records are written to file

7 13 Log Files Used by Array and AIX /smit.log and /smit.script Logs used in AIX to keep track of commands processsed via smit The logs can be removed and will be regenerated when new records are written Log Files Used by Array and AIX /usr/spool/mail Mail generated by the system to users is stored here Old mail files can be removed 14

8 15 Removing Users from AIX Users who have left the company should have their AIX login removed The users can be removed from smit using the command smit users remove a user 16 Removing Users from Array Due to the tracking of users and processes in Array, it is better to change an Array user s password and not delete the user The user s password can be changed in MBS123

9 17 Do I Have Any Disk Space Left? lsvg - Lists volume groups or specifics about a volume group 18 Volume Group Detail lsvg volume group Displays information in the volume group including free space

10 19 Creating a Device Map Create a map to keep track of what printers or tty is plugged into specific ports on the concentrator Keep track of each PC that connects to a switch or port Keep track of bad port or connectors This may help track down problems to a specific switch or concentrator box Backups 20 Verify nightly backups Check /tss/live/overnight file Check /tss/macros/backup.out to verify block count Create a clone tape on regular basis Monthly or as necessary when changes involving AIX are made Keep a copy of the tapes offsite

11 21 Purges Run purges on a regular basis A purge and REORG do not need to run together Create a backup prior to running purge A purge deletes records in the database and allows new records to be written, but does not give space back to the filesystem 22 REORGS / ONESTP REORGS are run to fix problems with invalid records in the database A REORG be run if many records have been purged from the datatabase Some REORGS are done nightly, such as WODR00 and WPDR00 A REORG on WIVR00 should be run weekly
