2 DECISION OBJECTIVES: APP DESIGN: How to improve user interface/user-friendliness What functions to add/remove, or how to improve existing functions PROMOTION: How to promote, raise awareness, and increase usage of the SFU Official App for all SFU students RESEARCH OBJECTIVES APP DESIGN: Determine preferences in regard to dashboard layout Test reactions on the concept of customization and push notifications Determine top functions and whether these functions are universal or not PROMOTION: Find the most effective or preferred communication medium to promote the SFU Official App

3 1 APP DESIGN: DASHBOARD ICONS There is a greater preference for dashboard icons versus the current dashboard layout.

8 3 APP DESIGN: TOP 7 FUNCTIONS The top demanded functions of the SFU official app remain the same no matter year of study, gender, or faculty.

9 4 APP DESIGN: CANVAS/CONNECT/SIS Access to Canvas and its functions is the most demanded function of the SFU official app, although integration of all 3 core functions (Canvas, Connect, and SIS/gosfu) is demanded in balance with privacy and security concerns.

10 4 APP DESIGN: CANVAS/CONNECT/SIS General survey data showed that 156 people want 1 app that integrates all 3 functions, but at the same time, 114 people are concerned about how personal information is stored.

12 5 APP DESIGN: PUSH NOTIFICATIONS There is a positive reaction towards the combination of push notifications and critical events for both male and female students. There is also a positive relationship between push notifications and commercial promotions for female students.

17 1 APP DESIGN: PARTIAL INTEGRATION OF CANVAS, CONNECT, SIS/GO SFU WHY: The SFU Official App team has limitations due to privacy policies and security concerns, so at this time, full integration of Canvas, Connect and SIS/go sfu poses many issues and lack of resources SFU students also show concern over how information is stored on the SFU Official App, so there cannot be compromises in order to reach full integration Therefore, partial integration is recommended with Canvas being priority since its functions are the most demanded HOW: Integrate the top 5 (or top 3 if not possible) must-have features of Canvas first: Access to assignment grade/feedback (70.8%) Reminder of due dates (67.7%) Access to course syllabus (63.6%) Access to course modules (60%) Course announcements (54.9%) and continue to integrate aspects of Connect and SIS/go sfu into the SFU Official App without violating SFU s privacy and security policies.

18 2 APP DESIGN: INCORPORATE ICONS ONTO AN OPTIONAL CUSTOMIZABLE DASHBOARD WHY: The 2 largest mobile platforms Android and Apple both have a preference towards icon-themed layouts There is a positive reaction to the idea of a customizable dashboard, but to increase user friendliness, the App Team should set a default dashboard in place for those who do not find a customizable dashboard necessary HOW: Create icons for the top functions and make the dashboard customizable with drag-and-drop icons Have a default menu set in place with the top 6 functions, with the top 3 being Canvas, Connect, and SIS/go sfu 1 3 Canvas Connect SIS SFU News: More puppy therapy! 20 4 PROMOTION: USE SFU S AND THE SFU WEBSITE WHY: SFU s and the SFU website are the preferred communication method across all faculties and years of study SFU Website can include latest updates without spamming students inboxes HOW: An from SFU should be sent out to the new undergraduate mailing list to promote awareness and adoption of the SFU Official App at the beginning of the semester year, specifically in the Fall semester If there is a new update to the app (e.g. integration of Canvas), it should be updated on the SFU website and added onto relevant s/newsletters to undergraduate mailing lists s about the app should be sent from SFU and can be disseminated into different faculty mailing lists, even if some faculties have a higher click-and-open rate than other faculties

21 METHODOLOGY AND LIMITATIONS METHODOLOGY: Data was analyzed and assessed from the General Survey Report Data was analyzed further via SPSS in cross-tab tables, descriptive frequency analysis, correlations, and chisquares LIMITATIONS: Majority of survey participants are senior students -> smaller sample size for junior students may not represent an accurate depiction of majority opinion or preferences for this demographic Majority of the survey participants are Beedie students -> we have limited information about other faculties students preferences and whether or not they align with the Beedie faculty students Small sample size of students from each campus makes it difficult to draw any conclusion and differences on their experiences/preferences
