4 MILESTONE REPORT As part of the NA1.5 task in NA1 and of the general EMI collaboration objectives, close relationships have to be established with the major infrastructure projects using or planning to use EMI software. This milestone concerns in particular the establishment of official channels with EGI and PRACE. A brief report of the ongoing relationship with WLCG and OSG is also mentioned. EGI EGI is the major Customer of EMI in terms of the use of grid middleware and the provision of use cases and requirements. EGI has been involved in EMI since the project proposal preparation and has influenced the initial set of requirements forming the base of the EMI development plan. Although informal relationships and reciprocal attendance of technical and community development meetings have taken place on a regular basis, formal relationships with EGI have been established only in October 2010 with the constitution of the EGI Technology Collaboration Board (TCB). The TCB is composed of the leader of the major EGI activities (user communities, operations, policy and software auditing) and representatives of the software providers developing and supporting software for EGI, among which are EMI and IGE. This formal channel is now being complemented by the establishment of a Memorandum of Understanding and a Service Level Agreement, which are foreseen to enter into force in December PRACE PRACE is the major Customer of EMI in terms of the use of UNICORE middleware and the provision of use cases and requirements for HPC. PRACE has been involved in EMI since the project proposal preparation and has influenced the initial set of requirements forming the base of the EMI development plan. The establishment of formal relationships with PRACE took longer than expected due to a not yet defined mechanism for establishing this kind of collaborations in PRACE. A more formal relationship has finally been established in November 2010 taking as an opportunity the participation of both EMI and PRACE to the November EEF meeting at CERN and the 8 th E-Infrastructures Concertation Meeting also at CERN. Although currently still no formal body exists within PRACE to discuss requirements with software providers, an official contact person has been nominated and it has been agreed that EMI will be invited to major PRACE events to report on the development plans and collect feedback. If more formal channels are required in the future, they will be discussed. WLCG Although the infrastructure used by WLCG is largely overlapping with EGI, WLCG has specific requirements coming from the HEP community. It has therefore been decided that WLCG should have a way of directly providing further requirements to EMI. The EMI PD has been invited as a member of the WLCG Management Board, which will act as high-level requirement body. Requirements will be internally defined by WLCG and passed to EMI as necessary using the MB. Once a requirement is define and accepted, technical discussions will happen directly among the most relevant technical people.

5 OSG OSG has expressed interest in collaborating with EMI since the proposal preparation with a letter of interest and commitment. In this spirit EMI and OSG have kept regular contacts on technical and strategic matters. In particular EMI has been invited to take part to workshops sponsored by the US funding agencies to constitute a Software Innovation Institute responsible to coordinate the future development and innovation of distributed computing software in the US. OSG has also committed to evaluate the EMI technical plans and provide feedback and additional requirements. Formally EMI takes part to the OSG/WLCG Interoperability forum discussion operational and technical requirements to make the OSG and EGI/WLCG infrastructure interoperable.
