This page lists your modules If you have just been assigned a module, you may not immediately see it on the Moodle Hub. See my Faculty / School below. 3. Check your modules and notices Access your profile by clicking your name Log out here a. Is the Induction web in your list? If not, click Moodle Induction b. The presence of the Induction Web on your list enables you to change your profile* My Faculty / School New Module? Click the appropriate Faculty/School and your module should be listed there. If not, click Synchronise Lists Missing modules? Click Add or remove modules and fill in the online request form 4. MG01FirstSteps 2 of 8 Sep 2010
3 The home page of a module As a tutor you will have Teacher access to your modules. Topics in the centre Here you can add resources and activities such as notes, forums, quizzes and links. There are 10 topics, but you can change the number of topics. You can also use dates instead of topic numbers. Blocks on the left and right With Teacher access, you can add, remove and move blocks. It is recommended not to move the default blocks otherwise it will confuse students when they switch from one Moodle web to another. The Links block is a special sticky block (it cannot be removed). If there is an underscore in the module code (it will be added for you by Universe) then the MID and Reading List links point to that module s entry in MID and Talis. You can ask your Subject Librarian to add your reading list to Talis. Context sensitive Help Announcements Only teachers can make announcements. All students on the module receive an copy of every announcement. They can t turn it off. Essential Module Information: For more help about how to use this, see click Tutor help and Search for Essential Links block You can change the number of topics see Settings Settings see later You can add your colleagues see Assign roles Moodle Docs: help from the Moodle community 5. Click Turn editing on to add topic resources, activities and edit blocks MG01FirstSteps 3 of 8 Sep 2010

If you are not sure what an icon does, hover the mouse pointer over it. You should see a yellow label containing text summarizing its purpose. Basic additions to the topics Try adding the following to one of the topics: a. Give a summary to a topic by clicking the edit pencil beside a topic number. Tip: keep the summary to a single line; you can use a label for more text. b. Add a link to a web site. First check your link over the Internet, then from the Add a Resource dropdown, choose Link to a File or Web Site. c. Add a Label to suggest how to use the web site link that you have added: From the Add a Resource dropdown, choose Insert a label. d. If you did steps b and c in the order given above, the label will be below the link. Move the label so that it is above the link by clicking the down/up (Move) arrow next to the label and choosing the correct destination. *a. Summary click the edit pencil *c. Add a label Student view: Switch role to Student *b. Add a link to a web site Eye icon: Hide a topic/resource/ activity from students *d. Click the move iconto re orderitems How a student would view the items MG01FirstSteps 4 of 8 Sep 2010

Note: mail goes to their University and by default they can t send you mail unless you change the settings Remote RSS feeds add a feed from a blog Moodle Help You can get Coventry University s Moodle Help from here. It contains printable how to guides and videos. Click Tutor Help to see the following page: Tip: Use Search MG01FirstSteps 5 of 8 Sep 2010
6 Adding information You can: add different file types to Moodle contribute files to Curve digital repository directly from Moodle embed YouTube videos (Use a label to embed on the home page; web page to embed onto another page.) use the Moodle editor to paste text into Moodle web pages and book chapters Ways of adding information The following image shows different ways that information can be added. More details and how to guides are available in Moodle Help: *Click Tutor Help, then search using the Keywords given Book: for adding a cluster of related information. Essential Module Information is an example of a book Essential Module Information: For more about how to use this, search for Essential Web Page: You can paste text and embed items into a web page. It s also useful for placing information that you need to change frequently. Search for Webpage Contribute files to Curve, the digital repository, then link them to a topic Search for Contribute Files Files: Moodle s area for adding small files and organizing them into folders. Search for 2MB Link to a file for displaying small files that are in Files Display a directory: for displaying a folder of small files in Files. Search for Directory Wiki: you can use wiki to create a set of linked web pages. You can also allow students to create wiki. Search for Wiki Voice tools: for adding audio information. Search for Voice MG01FirstSteps 6 of 8 Sep 2010
7 Settings You can change: the appearance to weeks instead of topics the number of topics 1. Click Settings *Change the Summary text The Full name, Short name and Course ID number come from Universe. The Summary text appears on the module / course listing. Scroll down to see the rest of the settings, then click Save Changes. This *Look takes at you the back Format to the module s home page. Note the effect of any changes that you made. dropdown box. Try week format. *Change the number of weeks or topics 2. After making changes, scroll down and click Save 3. Note the effect of any changes that you made MG01FirstSteps 7 of 8 Sep 2010
8 Assign roles how to add colleagues to your web Follow these instructions to give access to a colleague. Non editing teacher access can also be given use an alternative Role in step From the home page, click Assign roles (under the Administration block) 2. Click the Teacher link This indicates that a Teacher role will be assigned 4. Highlight the name of the person. 5. Click the Add button to add the tutor 3. Search for the person. Use the last name or username Note do not add students in this way Students are added automatically to Moodle from the student database, Universe. During October the nightly download only adds students to modules. This allows staff to add students whilst the paperwork is processed by the university. If students switch modules, they will see both their old and new modules listed during October. The automatic removal of students starts in November. When Moodle is linked to Universe, the overnight download will remove any student from the web if they are not correctly enrolled in Universe for that module. MG01FirstSteps 8 of 8 Sep 2010
