2 Moodle 2 home page When you have logged in, you should see a page that lists your modules (courses) in the centre and an assorted set of blocks to the left and right. There s a menu at the top giving links such as e-portfolio, study links and Moodle help. At the top right, there is a link to your profile (your name) and where you can log out. 1. You can access one of your modules by clicking its title. Click your name to edit your profile 1. Access a module Useful links You can log out here Your personal module list Blocks 2. 3 Add an item to the news forum The News Forum is a way of sending a message to all people who have access to the course/module. It works as a Forum except that all students are automatically subscribed. This means that a copy of the message will be sent to the students Coventry University s. 1. Click News forum 2. Click Add a new topic. 3. It is similar to using add a subject and a message. 4. You can drag or Add an attachment (file) 5. Finally, click Post to forum A Dickinson P a g e 3 Moodle 2 Basics

4 Editing a module/course Make sure that editing is turned on (see previous page.) Tips If you are not sure what an icon does, hover the mouse pointer over it. You should see a yellow label containing text summarizing its purpose. You can get a student s view by clicking Switch role to... in the Settings block Now that you have turned editing on, you will also be able to see Add a block (see later) Rename the title of the resource Editing is on Switch role to... for student view You can add a block here 1. 5 Change the topic title and add a summary The idea of a summary is a short text to prepare students for the activities within the topic or week. 1. Click the Edit Summary pencil icon below a topic. 2. Remove the tick from Use default section name (you won t be able to add a section name until you do). 3. Name the topic by typing the Section name (Topic title) 4. Add a Summary 5. Scroll down and click Save changes Topic title and summary have been edited Changing the number of topics Turn editing on. 6 Adding a link to a web site (URL resource) Make sure that editing is turned on 1. Click Add an activity or resource below the topic where you wish to add the URL. 2. From the Add an activity or resource list, choose URL, then click Add 3. Add a Name, the Description, (and to see it tick Display description...) paste the URL 4. Under advanced options, In popup will open the web page in a new window. (Use Embed to put a YouTube video into a new Moodle page.) 5. Scroll down and click Save. 7 Using blocks There are information blocks to the left and right of your Moodle module (course). You can remove them to the edge (dock) so that the topics take up the full width of the screen. You can add blocks too. This is particularly useful for displaying something that needs to be around for some time but which may not be appropriate for a single topic. Docking a block The blocks lie to the left and right of the topics. 1. If you click the rightmost rectangle at the top of a block, it will move to the dock, which is an area on the left of the screen. 2. Clicking a similar shape at the bottom will undock all blocks. Hovering over a docked block will reveal its contents. Dock 1 Topics Adding a block When you turn editing on and scroll to the bottom of a module s home page, you will see a block with a dropdown entitled Add a block. 2 Adding the Participants (People) block In Add... (a block), choose People. To move the block to the top left, edit the configuration and choose on this page of region left, weight -10. You can use this block for sending s or messages to your students. Other blocks to consider adding HTML you can use this to add any text, including links to websites and embed code. 8 Adding a file using drag and drop If your browser allows, you can drag a file from your computer and drop it into Moodle. (This is currently not available for Internet Explorer.) (Turn editing on) 1. Open the window on your computer that contains your file 2. Drag the file to the appropriate topic 3. Note that the added file also contains an icon showing the type of file, for example,.pdf, (Pdf is useful for printing or viewing online without having to open an application such as PowerPoint.) 1. 9 Adding a file - using upload You can use this method if drag and drop is not available (Turn editing on) 1. Click Add an activity or resource below the topic where you wish to add the file. 2. From the Add an activity or resource list, choose File and then click Add 3. Add a name, description and choose to include the description on the module page. 4. Under the Content heading, in the select Files area, click Add, to go to the file picker. 5. In the File Picker, Upload a File is displayed.
