Chapters 9-11 July 14, 2009 Chapter 9 Learning Objectives Describe and use proper text standards. Calculate drawing scale and text height. Develop and use text styles. Make multiple lines of text with the MTEXT tool. Chapter 10 Learning Objectives Insert fields into text. Check your spelling. Edit existing text. Search for and replace text automatically. Chapter 11 Learning Objectives Create and modify table styles. Insert a table into a drawing. Edit a table. Insert formulas into table cells to perform calculations on numeric data. Autocad Multi Line Text Tools AutoCAD text tools provide control over text composition. Text can be laid out horizontally, as is typically the case when adding notes, or drawn at any angle according to specific requirements. AutoCAD automatically spaces letters and sets lines of text apart at an equal distance. This helps maintain the identity of individual notes. Multiline text is created with the MTEXT tool and is used to prepare a single text object that may consist of multiple lines of text, such as paragraphs or a list of general notes. Single-line text is created with the TEXT tool and is used to add single-line text objects. Multi Line Text Tool To access the Multiline text tool left click on the mult line text tool icon shown below, or type MTEXT or MT, or T at the command prompt. The MTEXT tool is used to create multiline text objects. All the lines of multiline text are part of the same object. When you access the MTEXT tool, AutoCAD prompts you to specify the first and opposite corners of the text boundary. Multi Line Text Tool Ribbon 1

Creating a Text Style To create a new text style, first select an existing text style from the Styles list box to be used as a base for formatting the new text style. Then pick the New button in the Text Style dialog box to open the New Text Style dialog box. Creating a Text Style Select New To access the text style dialogue box type ST at the command prompt. Click the new button to create a new style Setting Your Text Style Multi Line Text Tool Ribbon Once the MtextTool has been accessed the Mult Line Text Tool Ribbon will appear. The Multiline Text Ribbon is used to access all of the features available for multiline text. Text style may be chosen from drop down box Multi Line Text Tool The font type and other characteristics may be set in the formatting area of the multiline text ribbon. Paragraph formatting options are set in the Paragraph area of the multiline text ribbon. Multiline Text Editor Paragraph Justification Options 2

Multiline Text Editor Tab Options Multiline Text Editor Paragraph Spacing The Paragraph Line Spacing area is used to adjust line spacing. Default line spacing for single lines of text is equal to times the text height. To adjust the line spacing, pick the paragraph line spacing check box. Select the Multiple l option from the Line Spacing drop-down list to enter a multiple of the text height in the At text box. For example, lines with a text height of.12 are spaced.1875 apart. To double-space lines, you could enter a value of 3.125x, making the space between lines of text.375. Multiline Text Tool Symbols Symbol types may be chosen from the symbol drop down menu. Text Editor Shortcut Menu Right clicking at anytime while in the text editor mode. Note: This will not work if the cursor is on the ribbon Multiline Text Editor The multiline text editor includes a ruler where indent and tab stops and indent and tab markers are located. A cursor is displayed within the text editor at the height set in the Style panel of the Multiline Text tab. The text editor is transparent by default so that you can see how the text you type appears on-screen in relation to other objects. The text editor can be made to appear opaque by selecting the Opaque Background option available from the Editor Settings cascading submenu of the shortcut menu or the Options flyout. Using the Multiline Text Editor Change the width and height of the text editor to increase or decrease the number of lines of text. You should usually not press the [Enter] key to form lines of text, unless you are actually creating a new paragraph. The multiline text editor includes a ruler where indent and tab stops and indent and tab markers are located. 3

Multiline Text Editor Multiline Text Editor Settings Right Click on the Multiline Text Editor option icon to access the editor settings. The following options may be toggled on and off using the editor settings menu. Spell check Ruler Toolbar Background opacity Spell Check! The quickest way to check your spelling is to use the Spell Check tool available in a current multiline or single-line text editor. The Spell Check tool is active in multiline and single-line text editors by default A red dashed line appears under a word that may be spelled incorrectly. Right-click on the underlined word to display options for adjusting the spelling. Spell Check Right click on spelling errors to display correction options or add to dictionary. The Spell Check tool can be deactivated in multiline and single-line text editors by deselecting the Check Spelling option from the Editor settings cascading submenu available from the shortcut menu or the Multiline Text tab Options flyout. The tool can also be turned off in an active multiline text editor by deselecting the Spell Check button on the Options panel of the Multiline Text tab. Multiline Text Editor Options- Accessed while the text editor is active. Multiline Text Editor Columns Sometimes it is necessary to break up text into multiple sections, or columns. Multiline text columns are created in the text editor as a single object. This eliminates the need to create multiple text objects to form separate columns of text. AutoCAD allows you to create columns as you enter text or apply column formatting to existing text. Column tools are available from the Columns flyout on the Insert panel of the Multiline Text tab, or from the Columns cascading submenu on the shortcut menu or the Options flyout. You can create one of two types of columns: dynamic columns and static columns. 4

Dynamic Columns Dynamic columns are created by choosing an option from the Dynamic Columns cascading submenu. Pick the Auto height option to produce columns of equal height. Increasing column width or height reduces the number of columns, and decreasing column width or height produces more columns. Pick the Manual height option to produce columns that can be adjusted individually for height to produce distinct groups of information. Dynamic Columns Static Columns Static Columns Static columns are created by choosing the number of columns from the Static Columns cascading submenu. The amount of text in static columns depends on how much text is in the text editor and the height and width of the columns. However, the selected number of columns does not change even if text does not fill or extends past a column. Increasing column width or height rearranges the text in the specified number of columns, but the number of static columns does not change based on column width or height. Applying a Background Mask Sometimes text has to be placed over existing objects in a drawing, such as graphic patterns, making the text hard to read. A background mask can solve this problem. To mask objects behind text, select Background Mask from the shortcut menu or the Options flyout button. Applying a Background Mask To apply the mask settings to the current multiline text object, check the Use background mask check box. The Border offset factor: text box sets how much of the underlying objects is masked out. This value, from 1 to 5, works with the text height value. If the border offset factor is set to 1, then the mask occurs directly within the boundary of the text.. 5

Use of Fields in Drawings Fields display information related to a specific object, general drawing properties, or the current user or computer system. AutoCAD can update field information automatically. This makes fields useful tools for displaying information that may change throughout the course of a project. For example, you could insert the Date field into a title block. The field is then updated automatically with the current date throughout the life of the drawing file. Fields are created using the Field dialog box, and can be inserted in both multiline and single-line text editors. Use of Fields in Drawings To insert a field in an active multiline text editor, pick the Insert Field button from the Insert panel of the Multiline Text Editor. Inserting Fields in Drawings Fields commonly used are: Date edited File name/ path Date/ Time File was Saved File Size Embedded Objects Fields are chosen from a drop down list and may be sorted by category. Tables Tables are commonly used in drafting to show bills of materials, door and window schedules, legends, and title block information. Table Styles Table style: A saved collection of table characteristics, including direction, text appearance, and margin spacing. Table format options can be adjusted independently of a table style. However, you should create a table style for each unique table requirement. For example, you can have one table style for creating door and window schedules, and another table style with different characteristics for adding an interior finish schedule. In mechanical drafting, you might prepare a table style for parts lists and another table style for gear data tables. Table styles should be added to drawing templates for repeated use. Inserting a Table To insert a table, the Autocad user may left click on the table icon in the annotation area of the home ribbon or by typin table or tb at the command prompt 6

Table Dialogue Box Table Styles Select Table Style or create a new style Select the number of columns and rows To access the table style dialogue type TABLESTYLE or TS at the coommand prompt The Table Style dialog box allows you to create and modify table styles. The Table Style dialog box can also be opened from the Insert Table dialog box New Table Style Dialogue Box The Table direction setting in the General area of the New Table Style dialog box determines the placement of the data rows. The two options are Down and Up. When the Down option is selected, the data rows are placed below the title and header rows. Pick the Specify window radio button to create a table that fits into a designated area. Editing Tables To edit the text in a table cell, double-click inside the cell or pick inside the cell, right-click, and select Edit Text from the table cell shortcut menu. This makes the selected cell active and displays the Multiline Text tab of the ribbon. When you are finished editing table text, exit the multiline text system by picking the Close Text Editor button in the Close panel of the Multiline Text tab, or picking outside of the table. Editing Tables Several table layout settings can be accessed by picking (single-clicking) inside a cell to make the selected cell active and display the Table tab on the ribbon. The Table tab of the ribbon contains options for adjusting table and individual cell layout. The same tools and options found in the Table tab of the ribbon, plus additional options, are available from a shortcut menu. To display the shortcut menu, select a cell and then rightclick anywhere in the drawing window. 8

Table Editing Ribbon Adding and Resizing Columns and Rows Columns and rows can be added, deleted, and resized after a table is created. The following options are available from the Columns panel on the ribbon or the Columns cascading submenu in the shortcut menu: Insert Left. Adds a new column to the left of the selected cell. Insert Right. Adds a new column to the right of the selected cell. Delete. Deletes the entire column (or set of columns) containing the selected cell(s). Size Equally. Automatically sizes the selected columns to the same width. This Adding and Resizing Rows The following options are available from the Rows panel of the ribbon or the Rows cascading submenu of the table cell shortcut menu: Insert Above. Adds a new row above the selected cell. Insert Below. Adds a new row below the selected cell. Delete. Deletes the row (or set of rows) containing the selected cell(s). Size Equally. Automatically sizes the selected rows to the same height. Merging Cells You can combine adjacent cells by merging them. Merge tools are available from the Merge panel on the ribbon and from the Merge cascading submenu on the shortcut menu. To merge cells, first select multiple cells to be merged. Then select the appropriate merge option from the Merge cells flyout. Select the All option to merge all cells into one space. The By Row and By Column options allow you to merge cells in multiple rows or columns without removing the horizontal or vertical borders. Pick the Unmerge Cells button to separate merged cells back into individual cells. Editing a Table Layout Additional methods for adjusting table layout are available when you pick the edge, or border, of a cell. This displays the table indicator grid, grips that can be used to adjust row height and column width, and the table break function. After picking a cell border, right-click anywhere in the drawing window to display the shortcut menu Table Layout Options The following additional table options are available from the shortcut menu: Remove All Property Overrides. Restores the table to its original properties, p defined according to the selected table style. Export. Exports the table as a CSV file. Table Indicator Color. Pick to change the color of the table indicator shown when you pick inside a cell. 9

Formulas in Tables Performing calculations on data in tables using formulas is a common requirement. For example, in a parts list, you can add the number of parts and show the total. In a door or window schedule, a total count of the doors or windows is often calculated. In a room schedule, square footage is often calculated and listed for various areas. Formulas calculate operations based on numeric data in table cells. AutoCAD allows you to write formulas for sums, averages, counts, and other mathematical functions. Cell Designation Calculation Using Formulas The Formula flyout button of the ribbon allows you to insert a formula into a cell.
