How to design a poster that ROCKS! Get the message out there!!! How? Easy steps to make your posters ROCK and ROLL Learn more.. Click the image or the link below to access the web article and download the template Creating a poster that really grabs your attention requires good poster design. We all want our posters to be crowd stoppers. Attention grabbers. I will let you in on a little secret that not many people are aware of. PowerPoint 2010 has some great design features and effects that are often overlooked. If we harness the power in these features and focus it on our poster creation we will achieve outcomes that we may not have thought possible.
I hope to just open the door a little bit and then you can jump in and go wild with your own creative abilities. Yes with PowerPoint 2010 I will show you how to design a stunning poster. You can and it is Easy. I will focus on how to design a poster using Microsoft PowerPoint 2010, harnessing the special design features. If you have Adobe Indesign or Microsoft Publisher and know how to use these programs then they may be your first port of call in creating a professional poster. However many people do not possess these programs. In this tutorial I discuss some of the fundamentals I use in creating posters. I will also supply you with poster templates. You may do things differently but this is the approach that works best for me. May I also invite your feedback and comments.let's get started with our first video on how to design a poster. Videos for Poster that Rock Poster design video Part 1 Click the image or the link below to view the video The steps are outlined in these videos. Watch them and pause your video where necessary and copy the steps that are shown. The first video deals with the foundation or layout of your poster. Poster design video Part 2 Click the image or the link below to view the video This second video gets into the fun stuff, adding shapes, images, effects and all the really cool stuff we all enjoy doing. You can go wild here and let your creative talents flow.
Poster design: Preparation steps Here is how I prepare to set up a poster. I go online and carry out an image search for posters with keywords specific to the theme for the poster that I am trying to develop. This shows me how others have approached the subject and gives me some good ideas for developing the concept for my current poster. Now I am not talking here about copying someone's work but let their work inspire you to greater heights. Emulate their style and design characteristics that appeal to you. Ask yourself this question; if someone viewed my poster for two seconds and then had to describe what message it transmitted to them, what would they say? Test this approach on your family. I stand up walk back from the computer and test this concept. Sometimes I print out multiple versions of the same poster and put them on the wall and ask for feedback. Many years ago I used to do a lot of paintings in oils and acrylics. What I learned was how to approach a project. I would often do multiple sketches, a draft painting or quick paint sketches. When I had a concept clearly in mind of the desired outcome, then and only then, would I start to work on what I considered to be the finished product. This approach can help in developing your posters successfully. There is an expression that says a stitch in time saves nine and that is very true when it comes to communicating through visual media such as a poster. Preparation is never a waste. This is what makes things happen.
There are three types of people in this world: those who make things happen, those who watch things happen and those who wonder what happened. Mary Kay Ash I hope you have fun with this project. Please bear in mind that this is my style of doing things. There may be other ways to accomplish the end much more successfully. I just wanted to share with you what has worked for me. Thank you for taking the time to read this article on how to design a poster and I wish you every success in your future projects. 10 One Poster with Many Faces by adding themes styles Here are the basic steps in a nutshell 1. Install a background using a section from a picture 2. Add some effects on top of the background, shapes and lines 3. Use an action image and remove the background 4. Apply effects to the image 5. Add text using WordArt and text boxes Watch this video and see all of the steps: Click the image or the link below to view the video Install a background using a section from a picture First set the page size. Go to the Design tab and click on Page Setup go to Custom and set the page Width to 21cm, page Height to 29.7cm and the Orientation to Portrait. Now let s get the background. On the Insert tab choose Clip Art. In the clipart search box, type sunset. Choose a graphic that has a section that you think will
look good as a background. Do not look at the whole picture look for a part of a picture that will suit your needs. Click on the clipart image and then click on your page to insert it. When you select your picture the Picture Tools tab appears, select Crop then set the part of the picture that you want to use and click Crop. Enlarge the picture part to cover the whole background. With the picture selected go to Artistic Effects and choose the Artistic effect that you want. As you hover over the affects you will be given a live preview. Now with picture selected add a picture style that adds a border to the picture. After you do this you may need to resize your image as borders will add to your image size. Add some effects on top of the background On the Insert tab, choose Insert / Shape and add some random sized shapes to the page and add an effect by going to Drawing Tools / Shape Effects and then choose the Soft Edges option. On the Insert tab choose the Insert tab / Shape and add some lines to the page and draw them diagonally across the page to give the impression of movement. Select the line then add Style and a Shadow from Shape Effects. Use an action image and remove the background Choose Insert / Clip Art and type dance into the search box. Select the image and then click on the page to insert the image. With the image selected the Picture Tools tab appears choose Remove Background. Adjust the background by
using Mark Areas to Keep and Mark Areas to Remove. When you are happy with the outcome of the image then click Keep Changes. Apply effects to the image With the image selected add two effects to the image first use Artistic Effect and then Colour. The goal is to try to get the image to POP with the style you have chosen. Move back from the screen and look at the IMPACT effect of the poster at this stage. Add text using WordArt and text boxes Add your text by going to Insert / WordArt and choose a Style. The biggest mistake that I see made here is to add to much text to the poster. The KISS principle should be applied. Ask yourself: if I look at this poster for 2 seconds and look away, what do I remember? Too much text will blur your message and reduce the posters impact. Why not try using Text Effects such as Transform. Remember to choose fonts appropriate to the theme and intended audience.
Make multiple posters from one poster When your poster is complete then we can unleash the power in PowerPoint Duplicate the slide several times by right clicking the slide in the left panel and choose Duplicate. Select the background picture and In the Picture Tools choose Format and change the styles to achieve a new great effect. Wrapping it all up This is a really effective and simple way to make fantastic posters like a Pro. These tips and tricks have worked for me over time and I am sure you will find them helpful. People often say what did you use to create that poster? The proud response I did that in PowerPoint 2010.

Install a background image using a section from a picture that has a 3D effect to sit over part of the background 3. Use an action image and remove the background 4. Apply artistic and color effects to the image 5. Add text using WordArt and text boxes Watch this short tutorial Click the image or the link below to view the video Install a background using a rectangular shape First set the page size. 16 Add a 3D image on top of the background whole background. Go to the Insert tab and choose clip art. In the clipart search box, type basketball. 28 In Conclusion Take a bow, pat yourself on the back, and shout yourself a cup of coffee. Why? Because you are learning There has been a lot to learn in this small book. We have looked at the basic design principles for designing a poster, three examples of how posters can be created and all the special effects that are involved. A lot of time in looking at WordArt and the design features of posters along with special effects that can now be created in the Microsoft office suite. Always remember this: if the work that you create pleases you then it is good work. It may not appeal to everybody but that does not matter. You may remember the parable of the old man the young boy and the donkey. No matter what they did, no matter how hard they tried it was impossible to please everybody. So don t try to please all. Be willing to accept criticism of your work because it is an open door to improvement. Feedback from others will help you identify weaknesses and strengths from which you can adjust and build your skills and expertise. I wish you well in your learning endeavors and feel to contact me on the website to pass on your feedback comments and if necessary request support. Remember that learning is a gift that many forget to unwrap. Best wishes with your learning endeavors Trevor Easton
